Remus

Remus Snacker is the original leader of the eighth vampire family, awakened into a settlement he blames for his past suffering. After Cindy restores him, he uses his bloodline authority and perception-altering power to turn the eighth family against the settlement until Borden and Leo exploit the limits of his control and kill him. Biography

Awakening and old grievances

Remus re-enters vampire affairs with intense hatred for Blood Fairies and the tenth family. He describes having been experimented on and demands Jim Eno, while later testimony explains that Cindy saved him when little more than his head remained and gained his cooperation. His loyalty to her is therefore a debt joined to a broader desire for revenge, not evidence that he created or directed her whole plan. (Chapters 883, 892–904, 922, and 936)

Assault on the settlement

Claiming the eighth family as his descendants, Remus forces its members to obey and detonates part of the pooling area to demonstrate that resistance will cost lives. He attacks with ordinary blood techniques, rapid regeneration, the Absolute Blood Armour, and a stronger version of the family's perception power, making allies see friends as enemies. The control turns Borden against Leo but requires enough concentration that Remus cannot attack them together at full efficiency. (Chapters 918–922)

Leo uses his soul weapon to redirect Borden's strength into Remus, breaking the illusion after Borden destroys part of Remus's head. Because ordinary injury regenerates almost immediately, Borden then uses Leo's Qi-coated Blood Fairy sword to decapitate and stab him; Remus turns to ash. His defeat ends the compelled eighth-family assault and prevents further casualties among the other families. Later references to Remus describe that death and its damage, not a return. (Chapters 922–945)

Appearance and personality

Remus is an ancient male vampire whose voice and status frighten later-generation vampires into submission. The corpus does not give a stable account of his hair or clothing. He is loud, contemptuous, and consumed by grievances against institutions and bloodlines he holds collectively responsible. Even severe injury does not moderate that fixation, and he treats descendants as instruments whose obedience he may force. (Chapters 883, 892–904, and 918–922)

Powers and abilities

Original-vampire body and blood armour

Remus has immense strength, reserves, blood techniques, and regeneration. He repairs a broken neck and bones without nearby blood and recovers from severed limbs and massive head trauma at a rate surpassing ordinary vampires and even surprising observers familiar with Peter. He also claims the Absolute Blood Armour and uses blood bullets and hardening. His healing is not unlimited: a Blood Fairy weapon reinforced with second-stage Qi prevents recovery and reduces his body to ash. (Chapters 892–904 and 918–922)

Perception and descendant control

As the eighth family's original, Remus can impose false perceptions on people carrying more of his blood, making allies appear to be enemies and fabricated cries seem real. He can also compel eighth-family descendants to follow commands. Maintaining the detailed illusion on Borden divides his attention, while Leo's blindness prevents the visual deception from controlling him. A sufficiently disruptive blow breaks the effect, and Remus loses all access at death. (Chapters 918–923 and 936)

Relationships

• Cindy: Cindy restores Remus and uses the favour he owes her in the settlement attack. Their alliance combines her plan with his separate revenge against the tenth family and vampire society. (Chapters 918–923 and 936)
• Borden: Remus alters Borden's perceptions and briefly makes him attack Leo. Leo turns that strength back on Remus, after which Borden delivers the Qi-coated killing blows. (Chapters 892–893 and 919–922)
• Leo: Leo identifies the concentration limit in Remus's control, cannot be visually deceived, and creates the opening and weapon conditions that let Borden overcome the regeneration. (Chapters 902–904 and 919–922)
• Silver: Remus's original status initially paralyses Silver with inherited reverence, while his conduct convinces her that the values of original and modern vampires may be irreconcilable. (Chapters 883, 892–904, and 937)
