Mitchell

Mitchell Sanguinis is a one-eyed vampire officer whose protective ideals lead him away from the Vampire Corps and into personal service under Quinn. He develops the destructive Rifle Blood Shot, becomes Quinn's first permanent dedicated follower after the latter's millennial return, and helps Quinn's companions navigate the factions of the changed Earth. He is not the Crows officer also named Mitchell, who appears in Chapters 567–577 and dies centuries before Mitchell Sanguinis is introduced. (Chapters 567–577 and 1616–1657)

Biography

A lieutenant of the Vampire Corps

Mitchell introduces himself as Mitchell Sanguinis while overseeing Vampire Corps recruitment on Mars. He tells the candidates that the Corps exists to protect humans and vampires rather than pursue revenge against Dhampirs, Pure, or Red vampires, and dismisses those who reject that purpose. His caution in the assessment is practical rather than timid: when a recruit reaches his limit, Mitchell stops the bout because the test measures judgment and endurance as well as strength. (Chapters 1616–1617)

Quinn, travelling under the name Nate Snell, immediately tests those principles. Mitchell first escalates the assessment because Quinn's performance excites him, then uses his self-developed Rifle Blood Shot when ordinary barrages fail. The shot destroys Mitchell's own arm and leaves him unable to recover for the day, yet Quinn copies and neutralises it. Mitchell reacts with pride rather than resentment, recognising that the newcomer can protect others on a scale the Corps cannot. (Chapters 1616–1617)

During a level-four beast horde, Mitchell is assigned roughly fifty recruits, many inexperienced. He puts Quinn's capable companions at the front, gives Quinn authority if he becomes unable to command, and rallies the unit around protecting loved ones. After Peter helps the squad avoid casualties, Mitchell distributes blood supplies to the injured and leaves a subordinate in charge while he investigates why the final wave never arrives. The choice exposes him to danger but also leads him to the demi-god beasts Quinn killed beyond the sensors. (Chapters 1620–1628)

Choosing Quinn over rank

The dead beasts bear wounds from Mitchell's own technique, convincing him that the disguised recruit possesses extraordinary control. Although he briefly considers Red-vampire infiltration, Quinn's defence of the Corps contradicts that theory. Mitchell kneels and asks to follow him before learning his identity, explaining that he wants to grow beside someone whose actions match the Corps' ideals. Even when he initially disbelieves the name Quinn Talen, he keeps his promise and reports Quinn's achievements to his superiors. (Chapters 1628–1629)

General Yaddy dismisses Mitchell's report and publicly implies that Quinn fabricated his contribution. Mitchell is embarrassed but remains on Quinn's side when the confrontation reveals Quinn's dominance and, later, his true identity. Mitchell openly challenges Yaddy's denial and feels vindicated when Andy confirms the returned hero. His loyalty is thus tested before it is rewarded: he supports Quinn while the safer institutional response is disbelief. (Chapters 1629–1631 and 1650–1654)

Mitchell resigns his lieutenant's commission despite having income, security, and standing within the Corps. He is the only lieutenant to leave, stating that he has always sought a purpose and developed his skills to protect others. Quinn accepts him, explains the risks of becoming a dedicated follower—including the permanent bond and possible death—and Mitchell agrees. The resulting celestial link replaces the monthly blood sacrifice required of an ordinary follower, but also ties his enhanced state to Quinn's energy. (Chapters 1656–1657)

Service on the changed Earth

Mitchell's Vampire Corps experience makes him the group's navigator and intelligence officer. He uses patrol information supplied by Andy to guide the ship around Corps routes, briefs the group on the Chained elite, and warns that their coordinated abilities make a direct assault dangerous even if Quinn is individually stronger. These objections do not undermine his allegiance; they are the operational caution of a former officer trying to make Quinn's plan survivable. (Chapters 1664–1667)

At the Chained wedding, Mitchell fights Fizzle while trying to determine why Quinn singled her out. He lays metal pins and strings to restrict her speed, saves his strongest blood shot for a clear line, and activates his celestial transformation when her demon-tier boots fracture his body. Their fight is interrupted, but Mitchell later takes the boots from the defeated Fizzle and volunteers to search for Quinn rather than leave without him. Quinn protects him from Ray's blast, and Mitchell immediately reports what happened to the scattered group. (Chapters 1678–1692)

Mitchell thereafter joins operations against the Red vampires and Pure. He supports the strike on Laxmus's settlement, investigates Pure's main ship with Muka's group, and uses his familiarity with faction politics to distinguish public hostility from practical conduct. He remains protective of Minny even while questioning the wisdom of bringing a child into enemy territory. These missions turn his early ideal of protection into service across faction boundaries rather than obedience to a single uniform. (Chapters 1773–1796 and 1843–1876)

Training Ceril and an unresolved later fate

After Quinn departs on celestial business, Mitchell stays in Green City with Ceril. Her altered body leaves her frightened of testing whether she retains any connection to the Mermerials, so Mitchell offers training rather than instructions. He frames her as the first of a possible new people created by Quinn and encourages her to decide what that responsibility means for herself. Ceril accepts the challenge and later credits him with teaching her blood control. (Chapters 1928, 2109, and 2119)

Mitchell is last directly shown beginning that training in Chapter 1928; Chapter 2119 confirms its lasting effect but does not place him in the scene. The corpus does not establish whether Jim's later memory alteration affected Mitchell, where he was during the renewed Dalki conflict, or whether he survived to the end of the supplied chapters. His status after teaching Ceril is therefore unresolved rather than confirmed deceased or active. (Chapters 1928, 2109–2119)

Appearance and personality

Mitchell is a vampire with a black eyepatch over a permanently missing eye and, in his first appearance, emperor-tier beast equipment. He is formal with Quinn, often pushing deference to comic excess, but his defining trait is principled loyalty rather than worship alone. He is cautious about inexperienced soldiers, enemy abilities, and children's safety, yet personally investigates threats and resigns a secure post when his convictions demand it. He also has a dry, sociable side, joking during tense journeys and sleeping whenever the group is idle. (Chapters 1616–1629, 1655–1667, 1780, and 1843)

Powers and abilities

Vampire physiology and blood control

As a vampire, Mitchell possesses enhanced strength, speed, senses, healing, blood aura, and a combat transformation. He commands group techniques such as Blood Barrage and can form ordinary swipes as well as specialised projectiles. His healing remains vulnerable to the costs of his own strongest attacks: a Rifle Blood Shot can ruin an arm so completely that even with blood supplies he requires the rest of the day to recover. (Chapters 1617, 1627–1628, and 1734)

Mitchell is an experienced instructor. His control is good enough to develop an original technique over years and later teach blood manipulation to Ceril, although her Mermerial physiology makes direct imitation difficult. He is still far below Quinn's absolute control; Quinn copies the signature shot immediately, fires it without Mitchell's delay or self-injury, and can repeat it against several demi-god beasts. (Chapters 1617, 1624, 1628, 1928, and 2119)

Rifle Blood Shot

Mitchell condenses blood aura into a small, high-speed projectile from a pointed finger or hand, earning the enemy nickname “Blood Sniper.” The Rifle Blood Shot is faster and stronger than a standard Blood Bullet and is effective against heavily protected targets when it lands. He can aim it from range, use it to cut off a fast opponent's route, and develop a larger cannon-like expression of the same principle in his celestial form. (Chapters 1617 and 1678–1684)

The technique's power comes with recoil and recovery costs. Its first demonstrated use cracks his shoulder and destroys the firing arm; later he withholds it until he has constrained Fizzle because a miss wastes the shot while injuring him. Repeated desperate shots leave both arms unusable. Speed, barriers, and superior blood control counter it: Fizzle's demon-tier boots evade it, an ability barrier can obstruct movement toward a target, and Quinn cancels the projectile head-on. (Chapters 1617, 1681–1684)

Dedicated-follower transformation

Quinn makes Mitchell a dedicated celestial follower and transfers celestial energy into him. By isolating that energy from his normal blood aura, Mitchell can trigger a transformed state that heals accumulated wounds and reshapes his body around an imagined combat function. Against Fizzle, rock-like material forms a replacement structure over his missing eye and one arm becomes a narrow cannon, giving him a wider attack when precision has failed. (Chapters 1657 and 1665–1684)

The enhancement has a strict capacity. With the same allocation Mitchell remains weaker than Peter because his base body contributes to the result, and he must rest after transforming even when he suffers no battle injury. Around six points of celestial energy causes pain severe enough to stop him moving, while Peter's limit is not found in the same test. The corpus does not show Mitchell developing a second form or increasing that capacity after the Chained battle. (Chapters 1665–1666)

Combat planning

Mitchell combines blood attacks with formations, battlefield observation, metal pins, and restraining string. He assesses enemy information before missions, arranges recruits around reliable fighters, preserves blood supplies for casualties, and recognises when retreat is safer than engaging several demi-god beasts. The Chained fight also shows the boundary of that planning: his trap narrows Fizzle's movement but cannot fully negate demon-tier speed, leaving him dependent on a costly transformation. (Chapters 1620–1629, 1665–1667, and 1681–1684)

Relationships

  • Quinn: Mitchell asks to follow Quinn before accepting that he is the legendary hero, then resigns from the Vampire Corps and becomes his dedicated follower. Quinn values that loyalty but also relies on Mitchell's practical knowledge of the modern factions. (Chapters 1628–1657 and 1664–1692)
  • Peter: Peter's base physiology handles Quinn's celestial energy much better than Mitchell's. They travel and fight together, while Mitchell often serves as the cautious counterweight to Peter's direct solutions. (Chapters 1620–1629, 1665–1667, and 1843–1847)
  • Ceril: Mitchell recognises Ceril's fear of her altered identity and offers her a purpose through training. His blood-control lessons help her develop blood-water techniques adapted to Mermerial water control. (Chapters 1928 and 2119)
  • Minny: Mitchell protects Minny as one of Quinn's companions, worries about bringing her into hostile territory, and includes her safety in operational decisions even after seeing her power. (Chapters 1689–1716 and 1843)
  • Andy: Andy leads the Vampire Corps and ultimately permits Mitchell to resign. Mitchell respects the Corps' protective mission but chooses Quinn when institutional caution and personal conviction diverge. (Chapters 1616 and 1650–1657)
