Joy (vampire)
Joy is a small-framed vampire from the fourth-family force accompanying Quinn to recover a Nest Crystal. Initially influenced by rumours that the king's strength is borrowed, she fights through doppelgangers and a prolonged beast siege that demonstrates why the expedition needs his protection. She is distinct from the earlier human Traveller named Joy. (Chapters 1499–1528)
Biography
Doubting the king on the Nest Crystal expedition
Joy begins the mission discussing rumours that Quinn's victories depend on temporary or borrowed power. She has already failed to pass the doppelganger guardians and is worried that adding one strong fighter will only create a stronger copy. Even while voicing that doubt, she follows the expedition and attacks swamp beasts, treating uncertainty about the king as a tactical concern rather than mutiny. (Chapters 1499–1500)
The doppelgangers force every vampire to confront an equal copy. Joy cannot overpower herself, so she follows the group's switch plan and uses her straightforward punching style against Moe's double while allies exchange opponents. When the beasts all copy Quinn, her fear reverses the earlier complaint: the king is now dangerously strong for the same mirroring reason. Quinn shelters the group and secures the crystal, after which Joy helps defend him and the damaged ship against waves of beasts. She remains alive but exhausted in her last appearance. (Chapters 1502–1528)
Appearance and personality
Joy is a small-framed female vampire whose size contrasts with her preference for punching. She is cheerful enough to joke about fighting her own face, candid when frightened, and quick to repeat rumours before seeing Quinn's power directly. Once the mission collapses into defence, she follows orders and continues fighting despite exhaustion. (Chapters 1499–1528)
Powers and abilities
Vampire physiology and fist fighting
Joy has standard vampire strength, speed, senses, healing, blood aura, and need for blood. She specialises in close-range punches, backflips away from attacks, and trades rapid fist combinations with an equally strong doppelganger. Her exact family ability is not stated, and the source specifically shows her conserving blood power during the later siege rather than using a named technique. (Chapters 1500–1504 and 1528)
The doppelganger fight exposes the limitation of a direct style against an identical opponent, while switching targets lets her exploit another vampire's known weaknesses. Against beasts she cannot replenish herself from their blood, and repeated punching drains her more quickly than evasion would. No later upgrade or soul weapon is demonstrated. (Chapters 1502–1528)
Relationships
- Quinn: Joy initially doubts whether Quinn still possesses the strength associated with his kingship. His handling of the doppelgangers and protection of the expedition answer the tactical question, while she helps defend him during recovery. (Chapters 1499–1528)
- Moe: Moe is Joy's closest conversational companion on the expedition. The two trade jokes, fears, and tactical warnings while fighting each other's doppelgangers and defending the ship. (Chapters 1499–1528)
