Joy

Joy is a former high-ranked A-class Traveller serving in the Earthborn operation to capture a Demi-god-tier humanoid beast. Her concerns about vampires and the cost of the Dalki war reflect the expedition's divided loyalties, while her earth ability helps defend the beast-transfer plan from Pure. She is distinct from the later vampire called Joy. (Chapters 1158–1180)

Biography

The humanoid-beast operation

Joy joins Longblade's force carrying two thin blades and openly questions how soldiers should respond to newly exposed vampires in their ranks. She does not attack the vampire allies, but the uncertainty shapes how she reads their motives. During the search she warns the group after finding beasts stripped of crystals and later helps hold off Pure while Shiro works inside the captured humanoid beast's mind. (Chapters 1158–1168)

When Quinn promises the humanoid beast that mining will stop, Joy sides emotionally with the military officers who see the planet's resources as necessary for surviving the Dalki war. She recognises a moral difference between killing beasts and destroying their world, yet accepts the latter as a possible price for humanity. Higher command ultimately orders the operation transferred, leaving Joy's personal resolution and later service unstated. (Chapter 1180)

Appearance and personality

Joy is an adult woman who wears light armour and carries two thin blades on her back. She is cautious about vampires, alert in dangerous environments, and willing to voice the military logic behind an uncomfortable decision rather than pretending the cost does not exist. The corpus does not provide a later description. (Chapters 1158–1180)

Powers and abilities

Earth ability and dual blades

Joy can raise an earth wall by striking the ground and fights with a pair of thin blades. She uses the wall to divide or protect the battlefield while opposing Pure and relies on Traveller experience to examine beast remains and move through the tunnels. The corpus does not state her numerical ability level, advanced earth techniques, or a soul weapon. (Chapters 1158–1168)

Her A-class Traveller background establishes substantial human combat experience, not equivalence with the Demi-god-tier beast or the operation's strongest leaders. No later upgrade, Qi stage, or demonstrated victory over a named high-tier opponent is supplied. (Chapters 1158–1180)

Relationships

  • Fex: Joy fights near Fex during Pure's intervention and asks where his leader is while raising defensive earth. Their relationship is operational rather than personally developed. (Chapter 1168)
  • Quinn: Joy is uneasy about Quinn's nonhuman identity and questions the promise that would end military extraction, but she remains part of the force and hears the dispute resolved through command. (Chapters 1158 and 1180)
  • Shiro: Joy helps defend the area while Shiro performs the mind-transfer work central to capturing and negotiating with the humanoid beast. (Chapters 1162–1168)
