Ian
Ian is a wounded Traveller who allies with Vorden inside an abandoned shelter on a dark portal planet. His knowledge and magnetism help the pair survive initially, but Quinn's uncontrolled Bloodsucker form kills him, leaving Vorden and the military to reconstruct what happened. (Chapters 69–100 and 198–257)
Biography
Stranded in the abandoned shelter
Ian enters the shelter after a hunting expedition leaves him badly wounded and too far from his original portal. He hopes to find medical equipment or a route to Earth and joins Vorden because both need escape and protection. Ian explains that the planet's day-night cycle lasts a year, correcting Vorden's plan to wait for sunlight and giving the younger student essential survival context. (Chapters 69–72)
Despite his injury, Ian shares equipment, watches over Vorden after a nightmare, and plans routes around the intermediate-tier beast guarding storage. Their partnership is pragmatic but protective: Ian repeatedly treats Vorden as a child who should not face the planet alone. (Chapters 72 and 78–80)
Death during Quinn's transformation
Ian uses magnetism to drive metal spikes into the Bloodsucker attacking the shelter. He recovers from paralysis and continues helping Vorden, but the creature is Quinn in an uncontrolled state and cannot distinguish ally from enemy. Ian is torn apart at the waist and dies before the group understands Quinn's identity. (Chapters 80–86)
Vorden later recognises that Sil's intervention saved him while Ian died in his place. Quinn consumes Ian's blood and unknowingly acquires his crystals, but remembers almost nothing of the killing while transformed. The aftermath burdens the survivors rather than giving Ian a posthumous choice in Quinn's development. (Chapters 85–90 and 257)
Military investigation
Ian had risen from rank F to rank D in roughly a year and was considered one of Jack Truedream's promising operatives. Reports of his death prompt Jack to investigate because it resembles another unexplained killing. The military correctly identifies Ian's magnetism from the metal-strewn scene but never receives his firsthand account. (Chapters 100 and 198–199)
Appearance and personality
The corpus gives no reliable description of Ian's height, hair, eyes, clothing, or age. He is physically wounded before his introduction, so his limited movement cannot be treated as his normal condition. (Chapters 69–72)
Ian is practical, knowledgeable, and considerate toward Vorden. He rejects unrealistic plans without cruelty, wakes the younger traveller from a nightmare, and continues fighting while injured. His rapid rank progression and Jack's expectations suggest diligence, but the corpus does not supply a broader career history. (Chapters 69–80 and 100)
Powers and abilities
Magnetism
Ian manipulates nearby metal through magnetism, pulling and launching spikes or bolts without direct contact. He uses thrown metal to injure the shelter's beast, and Vorden later copies the ability to levitate a bolt. The environment's loose debris gives the power ammunition, but the corpus does not show Ian creating metal or affecting nonmetallic matter. (Chapters 80–81 and 89)
His ability remains usable after partial paralysis wears off, yet his wounds and the Bloodsucker's superior speed prevent it from saving him. No ability level, maximum mass, range, polarity control, soul weapon, or advanced technique is established. (Chapters 80–85 and 199)
Traveller experience
Ian knows portal expeditions, beast patrol patterns, one-use communication equipment, and survival on long-cycle planets. He progressed from rank F to D within a year, but entered the shelter already separated from his team and badly hurt, showing the limits of solo expedition experience. (Chapters 69–72 and 100)
Relationships
- Vorden: Ian becomes Vorden's temporary partner and protector. Vorden copies his magnetism and survives the attack that kills him.
- Quinn: Quinn kills Ian while transformed into an uncontrolled Bloodsucker and later consumes his blood. Ian never knowingly opposes Quinn.
- Jack: Jack supplied Ian's ability and regarded him as a promising military operative, prompting an investigation after his death.
- Sil: Sil's intervention saves Vorden during the same incident, indirectly leaving Ian as the fatal victim.
Items
No manifest-configured inventory item is assigned to Ian. The metal spikes and bolts he manipulates are environmental debris rather than personal equipment.
