Earl

Earl Hampton is a first-year academy gang leader who enforces Momo and Duke's pressure on weaker students. He repeatedly coerces and tortures Peter, then provokes Peter while the newly created Wight is starving. Peter kills and eats him, making Earl's death an early demonstration of the danger created by Peter's transformation. (Chapters 49, 64, 147–158)

Biography

Enforcing Momo's control over Peter

Earl leads the first-year students directly under Momo's gang and uses physical intimidation to keep Peter useful. He demands information about Peter's friends, punishes lateness, and pressures him to support schemes against Vorden. After those attempts fail and Duke withholds Earl's rewards, Earl redirects his frustration toward the weaker student: Peter later explains that Earl repeatedly broke his fingers and had a healer restore them so the torture could continue. (Chapters 49, 64, 83, 109, and 147–154)

Death after Peter's transformation

Unaware that Peter has become a Wight with a dangerous hunger, Earl confronts him after class and tries to take the earth ability books Peter is carrying. Earl is already a level-four earth user and intends to sell the books rather than learn from them. When he strikes the starving Peter, Peter loses control, kills him, and begins eating the corpse before awareness returns. The academy investigation identifies the victim as Earl Hampton, while Peter's lack of remorse reflects the abuse Earl inflicted. (Chapters 147–161)

Distinct later uses of Earl

The later corpus does not revive Earl Hampton. Earl Ronsten, the fourth-family vampire who commands an expedition in Chapters 1498–1556, is a different named person, as is Earl Carlson of the third family in Chapter 2054. The vampire hierarchy also uses “Earl” as a title. Their combat, affiliations, and survival cannot be attributed to the deceased student. (Chapters 1498–1556 and 2054)

Appearance and personality

Earl is introduced as a first-year student with a scar on his chin. The supplied corpus gives no further stable description of his hair, height, or clothing. He is controlling, vindictive, and willing to attack someone weaker to compensate for his own failure against Vorden.
