Burnie

Burnie Sunshield is the hot-tempered leader of the Sunshield family, one of the human world's former Big Four. His refusal to submit to Hilston and the Blade family destroys his political power and leaves him missing, but he later reappears as one of the Blade-controlled Chained. He dies attacking the Cursed ship when Nate, Layla, Dennis, and their allies combine their strengths against him. (Chapters 308–338, 616–671, and 1195–1198)

Biography

A combative member of the Big Four

Burnie sits at the Leaders' table as head of the Sunshield family and one of humanity's most powerful fire users. He expects rank to be acknowledged and responds to disrespect with threats and visible flames. His long-running arguments with Owen make him easy to provoke, and he accepts a wager over the young competitors because he expects an opportunity to humble his rival. Behind the bluster, he understands the Blade family's concealed authority and recognises the warning that their old restraints may be breaking. (Chapters 308–338)

Resistance to the Blades and disappearance

When Hilston moves against the major families, Burnie refuses to surrender and prepares the Sunshields for war. His family's forces split across planets to conceal his location, but the Blades dismantle their bases and ultimately defeat him. Public reports only know that an unknown medium faction destroyed the Sunshields, leaving Burnie presumed dead and the family's territory unclaimed; the later reveal shows that the Blades instead kept him among their Chained. Final attack on the Cursed ship

Burnie emerges from a portable portal during the Blade invasion of the Cursed ship and declares that he will be free. He attacks Nate and Layla with fire-enhanced close combat, overpowering Nate's Qi, blood hardening, and nearly exhausted shadow while forcing Layla onto the defensive. Their coordinated support changes the contest: Layla transfers Qi to Nate, Dennis suppresses Burnie's hands with shadow, and multiple allies drive a black sword through his neck. Burnie's disbelief that several lesser-known fighters can defeat a former Big Four leader reflects how long captivity has separated him from the world's changing power. (Chapters 1195–1198 and 1265)

Appearance and personality

Burnie is a round-bellied man who appears to be in his fifties, with messy red hair characteristic of the Sunshield family and short, powerful legs. Steam and fire visibly accompany his anger. He is proud, loud, impatient with disrespect, and eager to beat Owen in their recurring rivalry. His refusal to yield to Hilston also shows courage and attachment to his family's independence, though the corpus gives little direct access to his thoughts after capture. Powers and abilities

Fire ability

Burnie is described as one of the strongest fire users of his era. He produces flames from his feet, wraps his arms in rotating fire, enlarges the flames at his elbows to accelerate punches, and erupts fire from his back in an all-direction counterattack. His heat can overwhelm blood hardening and Qi through sustained contact, while the force behind his punches remains dangerous even when Layla's blade negates the fire touching it. Shadow can suppress and drain some of the flames, however, and Layla's sword can cut through their energy. (Chapters 309, 323, and 1195–1196)

Close combat and equipment boundary

Burnie reinforces his fire style with physical power and knuckle-like equipment strong enough to withstand Layla's black blade. The weapon prevents her slash from cutting his hands, but it does not make his neck or body invulnerable. His final defeat requires several opponents coordinating shadow, transferred Qi, blood attacks, and a sword; no single technique in that exchange should be attributed to Burnie. (Chapters 1195–1196)

Relationships

• Owen: Burnie and Owen habitually bicker at the Leaders' table. Their rivalry is antagonistic but familiar, and Owen is saddened when Burnie's last stand appears likely to end the Sunshield family. (Chapters 323–338 and 616)
