Zhang Wenyu

Zhang Wenyu is a former suicide-prevention hotline operator whose compassion persists after death. He carries the lingering spirits and unfinished wishes of suicide victims, and later protects his identity from the Cursed Hospital by distributing his memories among thousands of those spirits. The many people bearing his name are carriers of that memory, not interchangeable physical incarnations of the one true Zhang Wenyu.

Biography

Keeper of unfinished wishes

Zhang Wenyu meets Chen Ge beside a railway after testing whether he mocks or exploits the dead. Unlike most Red Specters, he was formed through the burden of compassion rather than a single consuming hatred, and he retains his memories and autonomy. He introduces himself only after Chen Ge offers to help fulfill the suicide victims' last wishes, establishing a cautious exchange in which each completed wish earns Zhang Wenyu's aid. Their agreement develops into practical trust. Zhang Wenyu searches for the ghost fetus, supplies the wishes carried by the spirits around him, and accepts Chen Ge's help with cases he cannot resolve alone. After Chen Ge completes many wishes and arranges a film adaptation for a dead author, Zhang Wenyu's guarded tone softens; he nevertheless remains independent rather than becoming an employee who can simply be summoned. The name that survived erasure

Before Chen Ge enters Xin Hai, Zhang Wenyu promises to remain beside him and disperses from sight as a multitude of unseen spirits. Inside the hospital's false city, more than ten thousand different patients are registered under his name. An author at Ping An Apartments—one carrier of Zhang Wenyu's surviving memory—explains the city's false history and helps organize the dead residents around resistance to the hospital. The author distinguishes himself from the hidden original: there is only one true Zhang Wenyu, who transferred his memory to the lingering spirits he carried when the hospital attacked. This preserved his promise and let fragments of the truth move through people of different ages, faces, and occupations. The carriers guide Chen Ge and rally allies, but their shared name and memory do not make every carrier the same body or erase their individual presentations. (Chapters 1185–1189, 1191)

Stand against the Cursed Hospital

When the final confrontation begins, the carriers converge on the hospital alongside Chen Ge's other allies. As all lingering spirits bearing his name disappear, the true Zhang Wenyu's presence intensifies and countless shadows mirror his raised arms. He helps form a barrier against the Demon God, binds its attack with curse-like threads, and directs the combined force toward the deepest door, fulfilling the promise he made before Chen Ge entered Xin Hai. Appearance and personality

Zhang Wenyu can look like an ordinary living man without the negative energy normally associated with a Red Specter. He is restrained, rational, and initially cold in conversation, yet his actions are defined by care for people in despair. His patience, observational judgment, and refusal to abandon the victims he carries distinguish him from more volatile powerful ghosts. (Chapters 564–565, 1113–1115, 1156)

Skills and supernatural abilities

He carries a vast number of lingering spirits and can draw on their collective presence. He can conceal himself among them, transfer his memories to them, and later reassemble his power as the carriers withdraw. In the hospital battle he is treated as a Top Red Specter and uses the multitude behind him to resist a Demon God's assault, although the full limits of that distributed existence are never quantified. Relationships

Zhang Wenyu's bond with Chen Ge begins as a conditional promise and grows into trust through the completion of the victims' wishes. The suicide victims are not possessions but the people whose pain and last requests he has chosen to shoulder; their lingering spirits, in turn, preserve his memory when the hospital tries to erase it. The Cursed Hospital is his principal enemy because it attacks both personal identity and the truthful past he protects. (Chapters 564–565, 707, 1113–1115, 1188–1189, 1197)
