Hydra-Control Dagger

The hydra-control dagger is a descriptive label for the plain iron divine artifact recovered from ruins inside the Imperial Orb. Its principal known function establishes a bond between a wielder and the orb's hydra guardian, allowing Zach and later Zorian to direct the creature known as Princess.

History

An unreadable divine tool

Zorian recovers the dagger from the orb's ruined complex and studies it because its plain appearance gives no clue to its purpose. Like other divine artifacts, it defeats divination, and even destructive testing and Quatach-Ichl's examination fail to reveal more than supernatural sharpness and divine origin. A matching dagger carried by the sulrothum, together with the correspondence between their flying sandworm and the Imperial Orb's hydra, leads Zorian to suspect that each weapon is keyed to an imperial guardian. (Chapters 77, 81, and 85)

Bonding Princess

Zorian distracts the hydra in the Kothic jungle while Zach experiments with the dagger. Zach accidentally cuts himself, then plunges the blade into the hydra's back; the creature freezes, accepts his commands, and treats the new bond as legitimate rather than struggling against overt mental domination. The activation therefore does more than compel isolated actions: it establishes Zach as the guardian's recognized master. In the real month, concern over Zach's unstable contract leads the group to bind Princess to Zorian instead, though the later transfer procedure is not described. (Chapters 87 and 96)

Abilities and properties

• Activation requires the prospective holder to cut themself with the dagger to establish resonance, then cut the hydra to complete the bond. (Chapter 87)
• The resulting bond conveys the hydra's sex and disposition to the holder, secures obedience, and conditions the guardian to regard the relationship as legitimate. Princess remains independently alert and protective rather than becoming mindless. (Chapter 87)
• The artifact appears as a plain iron dagger etched with lines and glyphs that look decorative. It is supernaturally sharp and resists all attempted divination. (Chapters 77 and 81)
• The known dagger is keyed to the Imperial Orb's hydra. A similar sulrothum dagger is associated with the Ziggurat's flying sandworm, but the two weapons are not interchangeable. (Chapters 85 and 87)
