Spear of Resolve Striking Straight at the Heart of the Matter
Spear of Resolve Striking Straight at the Heart of the Matter is the matriarch of the aranea web beneath Cyoria and Zorian Kazinski's first psychic mentor. She recognizes his uncontrolled empathy as part of the Gift, teaches him to approach telepathy as an innate discipline, and turns his ability to retain memories across restarts into a strategic advantage for her people. Her alliance gives Zorian the foundation of his defining magical specialty, while her secret ambitions and the destruction of her loop copy leave him with a legacy more complicated than uncomplicated friendship. In the source world, a Spear who never lived that relationship becomes his ally anew and begins pursuing legal recognition for her web.
Biography
Matriarch and first psychic mentor
Spear leads the Cyorian web while it is already fighting the forces preparing the invasion. Their enemies abruptly gain implausibly precise counters to secret and individual aranean abilities, while the web's future divinations fail beyond a fixed point. These anomalies make her willing to consider Zorian's claim of a repeating month. When he arrives with Kael, she identifies his uncontrolled empathy as the early manifestation of being Open—a natural psychic capable of far more than sensing emotion—and offers information, training, and cooperation in return for a way to carry her memories between restarts. (Chapters 17-19)
The bargain depends on mutual vulnerability. Spear places a memory packet in Zorian's mind so his soul can transport it through the reset, while trusting him to return and deliver it to her next self. Zorian, in turn, allows an experienced telepath direct access to his mind despite fearing hidden commands. The packet works: after examining its authenticated contents, the next Spear accepts that another version of herself made the arrangement. This mechanism changes the web from allies who must be rediscovered every month into a small continuing organization able to accumulate strategy, lessons, and personal familiarity alongside Zorian. (Chapters 18-19)
Spear initially teaches Zorian herself, guiding him through mind sense, empathy suppression, the interpretation of thought, and the limits imposed by language and species. Once he has the fundamentals, she entrusts much of the practical tutoring to Enthusiastic Seeker of Novelty, but retains control of the curriculum and withholds dangerous secrets such as memory manipulation. Her caution is self-interested, yet the instruction is transformative: Zorian learns to detect nearby minds, communicate without structured spells, begin defending himself psychically, and understand why his Gift also improves divinations that feed information directly into the mind. (Chapters 20-23)
The alliance expands from instruction into counter-invasion strategy. Spear uses her web's information network to identify collaborators, directs reconnaissance and assassinations, helps Zorian disrupt the opening bombardment, and contacts Zach while initially presenting herself as the other time traveler. She also seeks peaceful ties with selected humans, regarding cooperation as both protection for the web and a possible route toward eventual civic recognition. Her guarded partnership with Zorian becomes genuine enough to include six aranea in the recurring memory packet, yet never becomes fully transparent: she follows private leads about the Gate and the loop's nature without telling him how serious her conclusions have become. (Chapters 21-25)
Soul-death, memory, and restoration
Spear and Zorian eventually design a provocation meant to expose the third time traveler. The web undermines the invasion, contacts Zach, and prepares an ambush after assuming that even a powerful lone mage cannot escape a coordinated trap. Red Robe instead defeats the coalition, extracts the web's connection to Zorian, and attacks the settlement. Spear had anticipated that the operation might fail, so she scattered a final message and underworld map among the minds of small male aranea that were difficult to track. Zorian reconstructs part of that message from survivors after finding the female web members dead and apparently soulless. (Chapters 25-26)
Red Robe's retaliation has two distinct effects. He kills the web members present in that iteration with soul-targeting magic, then uses Controller authority to alter the Sovereign Gate's base template so later iterations recreate the Cyorian web as soulless corpses. The alteration does not travel backward to permanently destroy their source-world originals; it removes living copies of them from the loop's future templates. Unable to restore them, Zorian leaves Cyoria for many restarts and seeks other aranean teachers, carrying grief, guilt, their partial map, and Spear's still-sealed personal memory packet with him. (Chapters 26-28, 55)
When Zorian finally opens Spear's packet, he receives the investigation she concealed. She had located the Sovereign Gate, inferred that the loop was a degrading copy-world, identified the Key as the five imperial artifacts, and feared Red Robe could already leave. She also admits that she hoped to learn how to enter the loop fully and depart before the others, treating one successful escape as a prize she could use for her web and species while helping the counterparts left behind. Zorian is furious at the intended betrayal, but preserves the message and follows its directions to the Gate. Her last contingency thus advances his escape even as it permanently complicates his memory of her. (Chapter 54)
After reaching the source world, Zorian finds the native Cyorian web alive and intervenes when Red Robe attacks it. This Spear has none of the loop copy's memories and initially treats his nostalgic familiarity as suspicious. Zorian proves that he once knew the web by sharing detailed memories of its settlement, secrets, members, and former interactions; disturbed but pragmatic, she opens her mind to examine them and accepts renewed cooperation. She later helps refine his large mental-illusion project, assigns Novelty as liaison, and supports the defense of Cyoria. By the aftermath she openly walks the city with Zorian and Tinami, blocks efforts to expel her web, and uses public contact as a deliberate step toward eventual recognition, rebuilding the alliance without pretending to be the Spear he lost. (Chapters 92, 97-99, 107)
Appearance and personality
Spear is a mature aranea with the anatomy of a large black jumping spider. She has eight coherent spider limbs, a hairy arachnid body, and multiple large, dark eyes rather than a human face or humanlike expressions. To most observers she resembles other members of her species closely enough that Zorian initially distinguishes her more through mind, voice, and bearing than unique coloration. Her deliberate posture and the deference of guards and elders identify her as matriarch more reliably than ornament or costume. [Chapters 17-19, 92]
Her emotions are expressed through telepathic tone, leg movements, body angle, and the complex impressions accompanying her messages. She can also speak aloud through magic when dealing with humans, shifting between private telepathy and audible conversation as political circumstances require. The physical differences between aranea and humans matter to her work: even a skilled mind reader cannot perfectly interpret unstructured thought across species, and Spear teaches Zorian that clear language, shared concepts, and deliberate projection remain important. [Chapters 17, 21-22]
Spear is composed, strategic, proud, and habitually manipulative. She probes for leverage, reads unshielded surface thoughts as ordinary social information, and tends to present bargains in terms favorable to her web. At the same time, she accepts personal risk, prepares for failure, and shares the benefits of memory continuity with selected subordinates rather than monopolizing them. Her strongest loyalty is to the Cyorian web and the long-term future of aranea as a people. That priority explains both her genuine mentorship and her willingness to contemplate leaving Zorian behind if doing so secured a unique advantage for her kind. [Chapters 17-25, 54]
The native Spear retains the same caution and political instinct without inheriting the loop copy's choices. She challenges Zorian's claims, demands meaningful proof, and only exposes her mind after deciding that his impossible knowledge must be addressed. Later, she turns public walks, magical exchange with House Aope, and Novelty's academy visits into carefully staged demonstrations that aranea can live alongside humans. Her optimism is practical rather than naïve: while negotiating for recognition, she also keeps the colony prepared to evacuate if Eldemar decides to remove it by force. [Chapters 92, 107]
Magic and abilities
Spear is an advanced natural psychic whose mind magic is inseparable from aranean biology and culture. As matriarch, she combines personal telepathic skill with memory craft, web-wide coordination, divination, concealment, and political intelligence gathering. Her abilities are powerful against unprotected minds but not unlimited: structured defenses can block casual access, cross-species thought is inherently ambiguous, relays can restrict what she receives, and opponents prepared specifically for aranea can resist or counter the web's usual methods. [Chapters 17-24]
Telepathy, mind reading, and mental influence
Spear can establish telepathic contact, exchange words and emotional impressions, read surface thought, and delve into deeper memories when defenses and permission allow. She reads Kael's unprotected memories through an indirect vulnerability before meeting him, scans Zorian's surface thoughts during negotiations, and secretly examines Tinami without leaving an obvious trace. She can follow multiple streams of communication at once, speaking aloud to one group while conducting a separate telepathic conversation with Zorian. These applications make her equally effective as interrogator, negotiator, and covert investigator. [Chapters 17, 22, 26]
Mind reading is interpretive rather than perfect transcription. Unless a target forms clear verbal thought, Spear receives incomplete emotion, intention, and imagery, with greater uncertainty across different species. A mind shield blocks her routine scrutiny, and even Zach's imperfect defenses restrict her to surface information. She claims she could eventually overcome ordinary human protections if determined, but the story does not demonstrate that every ward is helpless before her. Relays also matter: when she and Zorian communicate through one, she cannot simply inspect thoughts he does not deliberately transmit. [Chapters 17, 19, 21, 23, 25]
Psychic instruction and mental defense
Spear recognizes that Zorian's empathy is one expression of the Gift rather than its limit. Her early exercises teach him to turn attention inward, open his awareness to surrounding minds, suppress the unwanted emotional noise of crowds, and interpret information entering consciousness directly. She explains mind blasts, telepathic communication, the role of shared language, and the reason psychic aptitude assists some advanced divinations. The instruction begins with abilities aranea learn instinctively as children, so she cannot always explain them in human pedagogical terms; repeated guided practice and Zorian's own magical analysis bridge that gap. [Chapters 20-21]
She later delegates routine practice to Novelty while determining what may be taught. Zorian receives basic telepathic combat and defense sufficient to survive common psychic threats, but Spear deliberately withholds memory manipulation and other techniques that could compromise the web or let him falsify her packets. In the source world, their roles partially reverse: Zorian has surpassed her in raw psychic reach and many advanced applications, yet Spear remains an expert critic of mental constructions and helps him refine an immersive illusion intended for the final conflict. Her latest role is therefore specialist collaborator and mentor by experience, not his superior in every dimension of mind magic. [Chapters 23, 26, 92, 97]
Memory packets and continuity
Spear can package structured memories and place them inside another mind without making them part of that person's ordinary recollection. Zorian's soul carries her packet across the reset; the next Spear examines and authenticates it, allowing a controlled selection of aranea to preserve strategic memory indirectly. The packet ultimately includes material from six web members, including Novelty. This method transfers information rather than souls or continuous consciousness: each iteration's Spear is still a new copy that must accept and integrate what her predecessor prepared. [Chapters 17-19, 23]
Memory packets can be hidden, divided, repaired, and degraded. Spear encodes fragments of an emergency message into the much smaller male aranea, relying on their likelihood of surviving a destroyed settlement and their poor match for ordinary aranea-tracking divinations. The surviving fragments give Zorian an incomplete map after Red Robe's assault. Her larger packet lasts far longer but begins to decay, forcing Zorian to study memory craft across other webs and eventually open it under controlled conditions. What survives is detailed enough to convey maps, investigation, motive, and confession, but it cannot resurrect its creator or create personal continuity in the source-world Spear. [Chapters 25-26, 48, 54]
Web coordination, divination, and intelligence
As matriarch, Spear coordinates scouts, honor guards, oracles, assassins, and human contacts through an organized information network. She can project her attention through a subordinate at range, participate in linked discussions, and combine information drawn from minds with ordinary investigation and aranean divination. Her web identifies invasion collaborators, studies the fixed blackout in future forecasting, redirects official attention, and organizes simultaneous attacks on artillery positions. Spear uses these capacities to make the Cyorian web a strategic partner despite its lack of the destructive force wielded by top human battlemages. [Chapters 19, 21-26]
The network has practical limits. Predictions become less reliable farther into the future and fail around sufficiently disruptive events; divination does not tell Spear the full nature of the loop by itself. Cranium rats infiltrate human spaces more easily, and invasion forces develop shields and tactics specifically meant to defeat aranean telepathy. A matriarch can coordinate many minds, but losing the settlement, stored knowledge, and living members still destroys the web's operational continuity. The native web's later alliance with Zorian and House Aope improves its reach without removing its dependence on secrecy, political permission, and physical safety beneath Cyoria. [Chapters 18-19, 22, 26, 92, 107]
Concealment, speech, and combat support
Spear uses modified human magic for needs outside natural telepathy. She can speak audibly despite lacking human vocal anatomy, conceal herself with invisibility, and alter observers' senses so a group of aranea can pass nearby humans without being noticed. She also controls or directs creatures during joint action and uses the web's traps, spell cubes, mercenaries, and psychic attacks as coordinated tools. These methods favor infiltration, ambush, and support rather than direct magical dueling. [Chapters 17-18, 21-22, 26]
Her personal combat ceiling is comparatively modest beside the story's most powerful mages. In the source world she explicitly judges herself unable to confront Red Robe and the coalition's other top enemies directly, so she remains within the defended settlement while contributing mind-magic expertise and liaisons. The earlier web's carefully prepared ambush also fails once Red Robe arrives with abilities and information beyond its expectations. Spear's strength lies in preparation, perception, coordination, and control of the engagement; when an enemy can resist the psychic layer and overwhelm the physical defenses, she has no demonstrated attack capable of reversing that imbalance alone. [Chapters 26, 92, 97]
Relationships
Zorian Kazinski
Zorian is Spear's psychic student, memory carrier, and human ally. Their original partnership is founded on exchange and suspicion, but produces real loyalty alongside concealed self-interest. She gives him the foundation of his mind magic and the Gate information that guides his escape; he carries her memories, mourns the erased web, and still seeks restoration after learning she intended to leave first. The native Spear inherits none of that relationship. She and Zorian instead build a new alliance in which his overwhelming knowledge creates unease, his defense of the web establishes goodwill, and mutual strategic need gradually restores trust. [Chapters 17-26, 54-55, 92-107]
Enthusiastic Seeker of Novelty
Novelty is a younger member whom Spear uses as Zorian's practical tutor and later as liaison to human allies. Spear restricts what Novelty may teach and subjects her to diplomatic preparation, recognizing both her impulsiveness and her rare enthusiasm for human society. In the source world, she deliberately places Novelty near Zorian and arranges academy exposure for her. The choice serves several aims at once: training a promising subordinate, making human contact less intimidating, and tying the web more closely to the mage who already cares for Novelty. [Chapters 23, 26, 97-98, 107]
Cyorian aranea web
The web is Spear's primary loyalty and the scale by which she judges risk, alliance, and ambition. She distributes memory continuity among selected members, prepares hidden contingencies for their destruction, and considers claiming the loop's escape because of the benefit it could bring her people. The native Spear later pursues recognition as Cyoria's lawful inhabitants, while keeping evacuation plans ready if diplomacy fails. Her mentorship of Zorian and rapprochement with humans are sincere, but neither supersedes her responsibility to preserve the colony. [Chapters 17-26, 54, 92, 107]
Jornak Dokochin
As Red Robe, Jornak destroys Spear's loop-era alliance after discovering that the Cyorian web has preserved knowledge across restarts and helped expose him. He first kills the active copies and removes the web from subsequent Gate templates, then attacks the living source-world colony when Zorian returns. His actions make the web's survival inseparable from Zorian's conflict with him. Spear does not develop a personal dialogue with Jornak; their relationship is defined by his need to erase a strategic threat and her efforts to keep that threat alive. [Chapters 26, 55, 92]
Items
Spear has no personal or signature item. Memory packets are psychic constructs she creates and embeds in minds rather than physical possessions.
