Enthusiastic Seeker of Novelty
Enthusiastic Seeker of Novelty, usually called Novelty, is a young Cyorian aranea whose curiosity about humans makes her Zorian Kazinski's telepathy instructor, friend, and eventual liaison to the surface world. Her lessons give Zorian practical insight into mind sensing and psychic combat, while her openness turns his alliance with the Cyorian web into a personal bond. After the Sovereign Gate stops creating the web in later iterations, his friendship with that version of Novelty remains lost; outside the loop, he meets her again and begins a new relationship with someone who does not share those memories. (Chapters 22–26, 55, and 97–107)
Biography
Teacher, learner, and friend
Novelty volunteers to teach Zorian when Spear of Resolve becomes too occupied with the search for the third time traveler to continue his basic instruction. The web considers her too young for its defense work, but she treats that restriction as an opportunity rather than a dismissal: Zorian is still inexperienced enough for her to teach, and contact with him offers access to the human customs and magic that fascinate her. Her enthusiastic introduction, permission to shorten her ceremonial name, and immediate torrent of questions establish a relationship built on reciprocal curiosity rather than solemn diplomacy. (Chapter 22)
The lessons demand patience from both of them. Novelty is impulsive, talkative, physically intrusive, and easily distracted by human objects, while Zorian repeatedly steers her back to mind magic. In return, she answers his questions more directly than the politically calculating matriarch and cannot casually read his unstructured surface thoughts. He explains glassmaking, tools, and fabrication spells because sharing human knowledge makes her more willing to teach; she, despite lacking human hands and technical background, resolves to find some way to become a magical crafter. Their exchange makes each of them both teacher and student. (Chapter 23)
Novelty's practical instruction materially changes Zorian's defenses. She explains mind sensing and basic empathy through the aranean idea of the Great Web, describes how ordinary mental shields interfere with empathy while making a mind easier to detect, and identifies Mind Blank as a complete break in psychic contact. When Zorian asks her to attack his defensive spells, she tests them through feints, timing, and careful pressure. Her ability to exploit minute imperfections in his basic mind shield helps him recognize that flawless spell boundaries, not simply more elaborate defensive patterns, are the key to resisting a skilled psychic. (Chapter 23)
Their association soon extends beyond lessons. Zorian offers to introduce Novelty to Kirielle Kazinski, and the two young people bond over being treated as children despite their different cultures, though Novelty's attempt at closer physical contact frightens Kirielle into ending the first meeting early. A later meeting with Tinami Aope goes far better: Tinami's fascination delights Novelty, and their rapport gives Spear a route to House Aope. Novelty consequently becomes an unofficial liaison and endures a crash course in diplomacy, turning her personal enthusiasm into a responsibility to her web even as she complains about the discipline it requires. (Chapters 25–26)
Loss and a second first meeting
The web's plan to ambush the hostile looper exposes Novelty and the rest of the colony to retaliation. After one iteration ends with the web defeated, Zorian hurries to Cyoria at the start of the next and finds the female aranea and many males lying dead without signs of a conventional struggle. Red Robe claims he has permanently killed their souls, and Zorian initially accepts the explanation while trying to survive the encounter. The discovery transforms Novelty from an amusing instructor into part of a loss for which he feels outrage, guilt, and responsibility. (Chapter 26)
The later explanation supplied by the Guardian of the Threshold changes the mechanism of that loss. A Controller can expel people by directing the Sovereign Gate to alter the base template from which each iteration is constructed, leaving those people absent as living participants in every subsequent restart. The change cannot be reversed from inside the loop without the Maker's direct intervention. Novelty's disappearance was therefore the result of the Cyorian web being removed from the Gate's template, not proof that Red Robe had destroyed the souls of the people who existed outside it. The Novelty who taught Zorian nevertheless never returns within the loop. (Chapter 55)
After entering the outside world, Zorian reconnects with the native Cyorian web and once again receives Novelty as his liaison. She introduces herself with the same bubbly offer of friendship, unaware that she is repeating a first meeting that he remembers. In his workshop, her delight in unfamiliar devices and tendency to inspect everything within reach evoke the version he lost. Zorian responds with patience that would once have been impossible for him, while Novelty notices that he understands her unusually well and directly asks whether they knew each other in the future he experienced. (Chapters 97–98)
Zorian admits that she taught him mind magic, but their renewed relationship does not restore the earlier Novelty's memories or carry over her loop experiences. Instead, the two reverse their old bargain: she asks him to help her learn human magic, and he promises to teach her after the crisis. In the aftermath, Spear arranges for Novelty to observe academy classes and use her genuine enthusiasm to make aranea more familiar to human students. Novelty thus begins again as both learner and liaison, offering Zorian a future friendship without erasing the difference between her living native self and the teacher he remembers. (Chapters 98 and 107)
Appearance and personality
Novelty is a giant black spider-like aranea, smaller than Spear of Resolve and conspicuously restless. When first introduced, she is small and twitchy by aranean standards, has trouble remaining still, and circles Zorian while communicating through his mind. She explores human objects with her hairy legs and habitually pokes people and things with her front legs. Like other aranea, she has multiple eyes and formidable fangs; she explains that aranean fangs can pierce bone and hardened leather, a reminder that her lively behavior does not make her physically harmless. (Chapters 22–23, 26, and 98)
At ten years old, Novelty is only a year older than Kirielle, yet she insists that her recent maturation ceremony makes her an adult member of the web. She is impatient, candid, excitable, touch-oriented, and intensely curious, especially about tools, crafting, and any human custom she has not encountered before. She can be vain when admired and sulks theatrically when disappointed, but recovers quickly rather than nursing resentment. Her lack of solemnity initially complicates cross-species contact; over time, the same openness makes frightened humans more comfortable with her than they are with more formal aranea. (Chapters 23, 26, 98, and 107)
Magic and abilities
Novelty is an aranean psychic with practical skill in telepathic communication, mind sensing, mental defense, and the controlled penetration of magical mind shields. Her greatest demonstrated contribution is instructional: she can translate an aranea's instinctive understanding of psychic contact into explanations and exercises useful to a human beginner. She is also learning human mage magic, but no named rank, formal stage, or lasting magical transformation is established for her. The experience and human knowledge acquired by her loop incarnation do not transfer to the native Novelty outside the loop. (Chapters 22–23, 55, and 97–107)
Telepathy, mind sensing, and empathy
Novelty communicates directly from mind to mind and can maintain ordinary conversation without spoken language. She explains psychic perception through the Great Web: minds create disturbances in a mental plane, and those who are Open can interpret the disturbances to locate minds and identify broad qualities such as species and general mood. This does not automatically grant her access to every thought. During her early lessons, she cannot read Zorian's surface thoughts unless he deliberately structures them slowly and directs them toward her, a limit that makes their exchanges less invasive than his conversations with Spear. (Chapter 23)
Defensive magic changes what Novelty can perceive. Ordinary mind-affecting shields create interference that obscures emotional information, yet that same magical noise makes the shielded mind easier to locate. Mind Blank is a stronger counter because it disconnects its user from psychic contact altogether; without sensing a mind, Novelty cannot establish the link needed to affect it. She also explains that sufficiently skilled psychics can imitate this result by "going dark," though she describes the practice as associated with covert work rather than demonstrating personal mastery of it. Her account therefore distinguishes principles she knows from abilities she personally shows. (Chapter 23)
Psychic combat and mental defense
Novelty learned the basics of mental defense through telepathic roughhousing in the aranean hatchery, where young aranea are allowed to test psychic powers against one another. She rejects a strict separation between attack and defense: even a weak counterattack forces an opponent to divert concentration toward protecting their own mind. Against a shield, she describes two approaches. A patient attacker can use feints and timing to bypass a patterned defense, while an urgent assault can batter it down through brute force at greater mana cost and with a greater risk of damaging the mind being attacked. (Chapter 23)
Her experiment with Zorian demonstrates the first method. Novelty repeatedly slips through sophisticated shield spells because their fixed defensive patterns are predictable, then finds the crude but solid basic mind shield harder to bypass. She succeeds only by exploiting minute casting imperfections in its boundary. The test shows her competence against a human beginner and gives Zorian an immediately useful lesson, but it does not establish that she can defeat a veteran mind mage or overcome Mind Blank. Her physical body also remains vulnerable while she concentrates, a tactical limit Zorian explicitly notes when considering how long her attack would leave him able to answer with ordinary magic. (Chapter 23)
Cross-species instruction and human magic
Novelty's teaching works because she couples aranean concepts with direct practice. She answers repeated safety questions, reports what other aranea say when she is uncertain, attacks Zorian's shields under agreed conditions, and explains why each spell succeeds or fails. This makes her qualified to teach a human the basics even though Spear controls which secrets she may reveal. Across several restarts, transferred memories allow the loop incarnation to continue as Zorian's personal trainer, building familiarity rather than starting over each month; that continuity ends when the web is removed from later Gate templates. (Chapters 23 and 26)
Her interest in human magic is initially aspirational. Novelty is fascinated by glass, tools, fabrication, and structured spellcasting, and says that she is learning to be a mage, but she lacks hands and does not yet understand the material science and engineering that Zorian says crafting requires. No spell she personally casts is shown. Outside the loop, she renews the ambition by asking Zorian to teach her and accepting the chance to observe academy classes. At that latest point, her established strengths remain aranean mind arts and cross-species interaction; human spellcraft is a planned course of study, not a demonstrated mastery. (Chapters 23, 98, and 107)
Relationships
- Zorian Kazinski: Novelty begins as Zorian's telepathy teacher and becomes one of his first genuine allies inside the loop. Their lessons are reciprocal, with her offering psychic knowledge in exchange for explanations of human life and magic. Her disappearance leaves him with lasting grief and gratitude. The native Novelty later meets him without those memories, recognizes that he knows her unusually well, and asks him to become her teacher, beginning a new friendship on unequal memories but mutual curiosity.
- Kirielle Kazinski: Novelty and Kirielle connect over their frustration at being underestimated because of their youth. Kirielle is initially frightened by Novelty's size and attempts at physical affection, but she remains open to meeting again. Spear later expects Novelty's presence at the academy to help human students grow accustomed to aranea, extending the same kind of difficult but hopeful contact that began with Kirielle.
- Spear of Resolve: Spear is Novelty's matriarch, assigns her to teach Zorian, and later turns her talent for friendly contact into official liaison work. She subjects Novelty to diplomatic training despite the younger aranea's complaints, values her willingness to meet humans face-to-face, and judges that her exuberance can put humans at ease more effectively than formal solemnity.
- Tinami Aope: Tinami responds to Novelty with fascination instead of fear, and their immediate rapport gives the Cyorian web an opening to House Aope. Novelty's enjoyment of Tinami's attention helps her grow from curious visitor into an unofficial intermediary, while Tinami later participates in the web's attempt to secure a recognized place in Cyoria.
Items
Novelty has no signature item. Her principal tools are her innate mind magic, direct conversation, and access to human objects that she studies with intense curiosity.
