Lone Desert Smoke and Soaring Swords

Zhou Kang Ming becomes Zhao Hui Shan's partner after his family acquires money and he courts her with gifts, eventually serving as vice general manager of the family's photo-frame company. At the reunion he repeatedly redirects attention toward Zhang Yang's apparent lack of status, competes for the spotlight, and begins pursuing Li Ru for both her wealth and appearance. When violence breaks out, Zhou delights in the prospect of Zhang Yang being punished, distances himself from him at the police station, and later begs for mercy when the balance of influence becomes clear. His humiliation becomes materially consequential: he is kept for police questioning, Lone Desert Smoke members stop buying his company's products, inventory accumulates, and Zhao Hui Shan fears his family will blame her for their worsening position.
