Shadowrun
Appearance
Shadowrun is a spectral warhorse whose ghostly body does not require ordinary food, water, rest, or oxygen. He can run continuously through harsh terrain, retaining the imposing form and speed of the stallion who once drew Besgoro's carriage. (Chapters 52, 54, and 57)
Personality
Shadowrun is loyal and expressive rather than an inert transport. He reacts to the reunion with Besgoro, waits calmly at the inn, approaches the unusual mana surrounding Merka, and acknowledges Sungjin with a low call before a market visit. (Chapters 53, 91–92, and 115)
He is also courageous under direction, accepting dangerous pursuit and diversion work even when it exposes his manifested body to destruction. His recurring reactions and choices establish him as a sentient companion, not property represented only by a summoning item. (Chapters 122–154)
Biography
From carriage horse to familiar
Shadowrun first appears drawing Besgoro's spectral carriage through the hidden encounter at Draksis's Castle. He continues serving the ghost knight after death and is beheaded during Sungjin's battle with them, but the means to summon him survives the encounter and allows his spectral presence to return. (Chapters 52–54)
Once called again, Shadowrun carries Sungjin across the thin-aired Tahrakhan Plateau without tiring. At Ninety Nine Nights he occupies the stable alongside the household's other spiritually linked companions, where his responsiveness to arrivals and unusual mana shows continuity between journeys. (Chapters 54–57 and 91–115)
Across later raids, he becomes a reliable means of pursuit. Shadowrun travels through the Frostplains without fatigue or freezing, helps Sungjin overtake enemies, and cuts off fleeing trolls, using speed and endurance as active battlefield contributions rather than merely transportation between scenes. (Chapters 122–148)
During the confrontation with Zeratar, Sungjin summons Shadowrun as an emergency diversion. The giant impales his manifested body, which scatters into ash and returns to the stable rather than ending his existence, demonstrating both the risks of his participation and the recoverable nature of his spectral form. (Chapter 154)
Relationships
Besgoro is Shadowrun's longtime companion from before their hidden-boss defeat. Their reunion preserves an emotional connection to the knight's former existence, and Shadowrun's continuing presence helps carry that bond into life at the inn. (Chapters 52–54)
Sungjin becomes Shadowrun's summoner and traveling companion. He relies on the stallion for movement and battlefield positioning, while Shadowrun recognizes his calls and responds as a distinct member of the group. (Chapters 54–154)
Cain initially distrusts Shadowrun's ghostly nature. They later share Ninety Nine Nights with Rajenta and Soldamyr as fellow spiritually linked companions. (Chapters 54 and 91–92)
Skills and abilities
Shadowrun's defining ability is relentless speed. He can run continuously without fatigue, outpace Swift Paw, cross thin air and extreme cold, and support both pursuit and interception over terrain that would exhaust or disable an ordinary horse. (Chapters 52, 57, 122–123, and 148)
His spectral nature permits remote manifestation through a Spiritual Link and a return to the inn after his projected body is destroyed. Summoning cooldowns and unsuitable terrain can limit when Sungjin deploys him, but a fatal injury to the manifestation is not necessarily permanent death. (Chapters 54, 91–92, and 154)
Equipment
A horse-requisition coin and later medallion provide the summoning focus for Shadowrun's Spiritual Link. These objects enable his manifestation but are not the stallion's identity; Shadowrun remains the sentient spirit who reacts, travels, and fights through that connection. (Chapters 53–54 and 91–92)
