Santiago

Santiago is a Mexican dagger fighter assigned to the Giant's Canyon party. He initially contributes efficient close-range attacks, then conspires with Raj to murder their teammates for personal advantage. After escaping the first confrontation, he poisons Cain and takes Serin Han hostage, but Sungjin defeats and executes him. (Chapters 23–29)

Appearance

Santiago is a dark-skinned Mexican man who carries paired daggers. An intricate tattoo covers part of his arm. Sungjin suspects from the tattoo and Santiago's practiced violence that he may have belonged to a drug cartel, but this is explicitly Sungjin's inference rather than a confirmed biography. (Chapter 24)

Personality

Santiago is threatening even during introductions, describing himself through experience cutting throats. He can cooperate when it benefits him and shows real skill against ogres, but his restraint is opportunistic rather than loyal. Once Sungjin leaves the group, Santiago and Raj target their remaining companions, and Santiago later uses pain, poison, and a hostage rather than risk a fair fight. (Chapters 24–29)

Biography

Betrayal in Giant's Canyon

Santiago enters the canyon beside Raj at the front of the formation. He slips behind an ogre and cuts its carotid artery, then continues fighting with the party while observing the strength of Serin and the apparently absent Sungjin. After the ordinary cooperation has carried them forward, he joins Raj in a planned attack: they murder Xian Wang and turn on Serin for their own gratification and advantage. (Chapters 24–27)

Sungjin interrupts the assault and overwhelms the conspirators, but Santiago escapes the immediate clash. He later strikes Cain with paralysis poison and holds a wounded Serin at knifepoint, believing the hostage will control Sungjin. The tactic fails when Sungjin uses magic to reverse their positions, frees Serin, and defeats Santiago's Slice and Dice attack. Sungjin then inflicts the fear and helplessness Santiago imposed on victims before killing him. (Chapters 27–29)

Relationships

• Serin Han: Santiago first fights in her party, then targets her with Raj and later uses her as a bleeding hostage. His attack gives Serin direct reason to distinguish Sungjin's severe manner from actual predation and betrayal. (Chapters 24–29)
• Raj: Santiago and Raj cooperate as frontline fighters before revealing a shared plan to kill Xian and assault Serin. Their alliance collapses when Sungjin returns with overwhelming force. (Chapters 24–27)
• Sungjin: Santiago views Sungjin's strength as a danger to evade or control. Poisoning Cain and taking Serin hostage only intensify Sungjin's resolve to execute him. (Chapters 27–29)

Skills and abilities

Dagger fighting. Santiago is fast and practiced at attacking vital areas, including the throat. Slice and Dice spins his paired blades in a drill-like rush capable of tearing into a target at close range, but it cannot overcome Sungjin's superior speed and swordsmanship. (Chapters 24 and 29)

Poison and ambush. Santiago applies a paralysis poison strong enough to disable Cain temporarily and uses surprise attacks rather than confronting superior opponents directly. The method creates openings, but it does not neutralize Sungjin or provide a safe exit once the hostage maneuver fails. (Chapters 27–29)
