Najyah

Najyah is Khalik Behr-Medr’s Harpax eagle familiar, an intelligent and fiercely independent aerial scout whose bond with the prince makes her both a combatant and a member of the cabal’s extended family.

Biography

A prince’s familiar

Najyah is the one companion who continues to Generasi with Khalik after the rest of his travelling party turns back. Their loyalty does not make her docile: when he searches the Beastarium in alarm, she pretends to be dead, startles him and Alex when they approach, and flies away crying as though laughing. That prank establishes an affectionate relationship in which she obeys in danger but retains preferences, humour, and a will Khalik cannot simply treat as equipment. (Chapters 33–36)

During Baelin’s first survival test, Najyah becomes the new group’s eyes in the sky. She locates routes and tracks, relays what she sees through her familiar bond, attacks muupkaras with talons and beak, and lets Khalik originate stone volleys from her position. Her warnings and attacks repeatedly protect companions who have only just met her, helping the strangers survive long enough to become the cabal. She later competes in the Duel by Proxy, where her agility and discipline carry her through several matches before Harmless defeats her in the semifinal. (Chapters 39–42 and 210–213)

Scout across Thameland and the planes

On the Research Castle expedition, Najyah’s aerial reach makes her one of the group’s standard advance scouts. She searches the Greymoor bog, helps locate a submerged corpse and a captive child, and harasses the Crich-Tulagh holding Khalik while keeping beyond its tendrils. Her sight complements Brutus’s scent and summoned scouts’ other senses, but open sky does not make her omniscient: cover, darkness, weather, and attacks that target flyers can still deny or endanger her observations. (Chapters 263–266)

As the expedition’s battles expand, Najyah moves from reconnaissance into rescue and disruption. She tears a Ravener-spawn away from Svenia, finishes airborne spear-flies, and later flies through a demonic back line in stone armour, destroying eyes and spellcasting hands while Khalik sends sand, rock, and glass from her body. These actions preserve allies and break enemy concentration, but they also consume Khalik’s mana and expose her to threats powerful enough to injure a familiar directly. (Chapters 417 and 481)

Tekezash and the cabal

Najyah remains expressive as the cabal grows beyond university exercises. She protests when Alex distributes food without immediately serving her, nuzzles an exhausted Khalik when his engagement ritual approaches, and celebrates with him after Sinope accepts his oath. In Tekezash she circles eagerly before the royal family’s arrival and feasts on treats Khalik says his father uses to spoil her. Her behaviour connects the prince’s student life and royal home: she belongs comfortably in both, while her teasing companionship helps reveal the person beneath his formal title. (Chapters 553–573)

The final war

When the cabal reunites, Najyah returns naturally to its shared training and planning. She scouts the fire-cloud assault, accompanies Khalik into the fae wild, and searches through mist for Baelin’s battle and the Ravener’s movements. During the campaign against the fae gates, Khalik casts destructive spells through her while she identifies remaining portals; inside the Ravener, they help seal approaches and defend the chamber where the coalition attacks the construct. Her familiar link turns distant sight into immediate tactical decisions at every stage of the final assault. (Chapters 789–840 and 851–887)

After the cycle ends, Najyah remains at Khalik’s side during Alex’s graduation and wedding celebrations. The narrative gives her no separate retirement or new office; her latest state is continuous with the relationship that brought her to Generasi—still observant, socially present, and part of the circle of companions whose shared life continues after war. (Chapters 831 and 905–906)

Appearance and personality

Najyah is a thirty-three-pound Harpax eagle with massive wings, fierce talons, a razor-sharp beak, and predatory eyes that display unusual intelligence. In flight she is agile enough to evade spells and use height for reconnaissance. Her size is imposing for a bird without making her a mount comparable to Vesuvius, and powerful magic can still threaten her despite her natural weapons. (Chapters 33, 40, and 210–213)

She is loyal, playful, proud, food-motivated, and sometimes wilful. Najyah can shift from pretending to be dead for a joke to watching a battlefield with absolute caution, and she readily voices pleasure or offence through cries, posture, and pecks. Her intelligence is clear through behaviour and her link with Khalik, but the corpus does not establish independent spoken language. (Chapters 33–906)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Najyah’s capabilities combine those of a large trained eagle with the familiar bond and spells Khalik channels into or through her. The narrative does not establish a formal tier or permanent magical transformation for her.

Familiar bond and remote spell origin

Najyah and Khalik exchange information silently through their familiar connection, letting him understand routes, threats, and distant events she observes. He can also use her as the origin point for spells, causing stone volleys, sandstorms, and other earth effects to emerge from her position rather than his. This creates unexpected angles and extends his battlefield reach, but the spells still draw on Khalik’s mana and concentration. (Chapters 40–42, 553, and 851–887)

Khalik can send temporary enhancements through the bond. Agility magic accelerates her evasive flight, strength magic improves lifting and striking, and protective earth or stone armour lets her enter dangerous formations. These effects are cast applications rather than unexplained innate upgrades; when they end, she remains a formidable but physically vulnerable Harpax eagle. (Chapters 210–213 and 481)

Aerial scouting and communication

Najyah can climb rapidly, circle above difficult terrain, identify tracks and enemies, and direct Khalik’s attention through their link. She scouts ahead in deserts, bogs, battlefields, and the fae wild, where her reports help the group select routes, locate gates, and detect attacks. Dense canopy, underground passages, magical mist, and hazards in the sky limit what she can see, so the cabal often pairs her sight with scent, magic, or other summoned scouts. (Chapters 40–42, 263–266, and 851–864)

Talons, beak, and aerial combat

Najyah attacks by diving with speed and weight, gripping or raking targets with her talons, and finishing vulnerable enemies with her beak. She can blind a xyrthak, tear apart flying Ravener-spawn, disrupt casters, and carry or knock smaller opponents from advantageous positions. Her best applications depend on space to manoeuvre and on choosing exposed targets; heavy armour, entangling attacks, and enemies large enough to seize her remain serious limits.
