Brutus

Brutus is Theresa Lu's three-headed cerberus, lifelong hunting companion, and eventual blood familiar. Raised from an orphaned pup, he protects Theresa, Alex Roth, and Selina Roth across their flight from Thameland and grows into a bone-armoured battlefield partner whose life force is permanently joined to Theresa's.

Biography

Guardian on the road

Theresa found Brutus orphaned in the Coille Woods and raised him from a pup, producing an unusually disciplined bond between huntress and naturally dangerous monster. When Alex must flee Alric, Master Lu sends Theresa and Brutus as the family's deadliest protection. Brutus initially distrusts Alex and rejects transparent attempts to win him with food, but he obeys Theresa, hunts for the group, and stays close to Selina as they take the dangerous road toward the coast. (Chapters 2–7)

The silence-spider attack makes his protective role more than intimidation. Brutus engages an armoured predator that the young travelers cannot easily harm and suffers injury while holding it in the fight; Cedric later heals him. He and Theresa then help Alex kill the creature, establishing a team in which Brutus supplies senses, mass, and multiple jaws while the humans find openings his body alone cannot create. (Chapters 7–8)

His behavior already shows judgment beyond simple aggression. He wakes at warning, watches the trees with six eyes, and reacts to Theresa's commands even under pressure. Although the corpus does not make him sapient, it repeatedly presents him as trainable, emotionally expressive, and capable of choosing familiar people over immediate impulse. The journey begins his gradual acceptance of Alex as a member of the family he guards. (Chapters 4–17)

Cerberus in Generasi

The wider world tests Brutus through unfamiliar crowds, ships, scents, and species. Generasi's guards question whether a three-headed hound of his size is safe, but he ignores provocations and remains beside Theresa. He is frightened by transparent sky-ship floors and distressed by strange odors, reminders that his keen senses can burden him as well as help him. At home he becomes part of the household's ordinary routines rather than a weapon kept apart. (Chapters 19–39 and 74–117)

In the Cave of the Traveller, Brutus scouts tunnels, detects remains, stands guard over Selina, and charges through worker-spiders whose attacks struggle against his hide. He understands Theresa's precise positional commands and, after the hive-queen nearly kills the party, shares their fear and need for comfort. Alex's calm touch during the aftermath marks a change: Brutus allows affection he once would have answered with a snap, and the two begin building trust through danger rather than bribery. (Chapters 23–28)

That trust becomes operational in Baelin's later dungeon test, when Brutus is separated from Theresa and placed with Alex and Thundar. Anxious to find his master, he nevertheless leads their formation, checks that the wizards remain behind him, and savages undead while protected by Alex's force spells. When he catches Theresa's scent he runs toward her, but his general caution and responsiveness show why she relies on him as a hunting partner rather than treating him as an uncontrolled monster. (Chapters 85–105)

Brutus trains and fights throughout the cabal's early years. Theresa uses his three noses to track a disguised mana vampire, and his physical engagement helps expose and subdue it despite the creature's draining power. At Isolde's cousin's estate, he joins the local hounds against Ravener-spawn and fights his way toward separated allies. These encounters expand his loyalty from Theresa alone to the interconnected Roth household and cabal. (Chapters 112–253)

Hunts and family battles

During the expedition into Greymoor, Brutus acts as scout and warning system for a much larger force. He detects death hidden in a bog before most companions can smell it, helps Theresa test uncertain terrain, and stays ready beside fighters in tunnels and fortifications. His nose is powerful but not infallible: magic, overwhelming battlefield scents, and creatures without ordinary traces can defeat it, so the group combines his signals with Najyah's aerial sight and wizardly detection. (Chapters 256–333)

He and Theresa increasingly fight as a paired unit. Brutus attacks legs, pins or tears at heavily built Ravener-spawn, and protects her flanks while she uses arrows or blades; she responds immediately when swarms or larger monsters threaten him. Their mutual rescues demonstrate the limitation of his original form: his tough hide and strength are formidable against ordinary prey, but the escalating war produces enemies whose armour, numbers, flight, and magic can overwhelm a terrestrial cerberus. (Chapters 348–398)

Brutus also becomes embedded in family life during the years between major expeditions. He watches Selina, joins hunts, visits the junior school with Claygon, begs at shared meals, and eventually accepts Alex's touch and direction without hostility. When Alex later reflects that Brutus once would have attacked him for an attempted hug, the contrast confirms that respect and repeated protection—not domestication tricks—have made Alex another trusted guardian in the hound's world. (Chapters 402–550 and 700–725)

The household equips him for battles his natural hide cannot safely absorb. By Chapter 564, he wears three enchanted collars, each able to project greater force armour over his body. These defenses let him enter more dangerous engagements without changing what he is, but Theresa and Alex still recognize a deeper problem: her life-enforcement growth will extend her life and fighting ceiling far beyond Brutus's natural lifespan and resilience. (Chapters 550–606)

The blood-familiar bond

Alex proposes a blood-familiar ritual as an engagement gift to Theresa under the name Operation Brutus Forever. The plan will join their life forces so Brutus shares her life-enforcement benefits and can remain with her for her extended lifetime. Theresa hesitates because Brutus cannot verbally consent and because the bond puts him at risk; she decides to proceed only after weighing that risk against his established desire to accompany and protect the family in every danger. (Chapters 607–608)

The ritual creates a permanent two-way bridge rather than a one-sided enhancement. While both are healthy, their joined life forces increase resilience and Theresa's nature-strengthened energy flows into Brutus. If either dies, the survivor will suffer a critical loss of life force; if Theresa dies after Brutus's natural lifespan has passed, losing her support could kill him almost immediately. The benefit therefore preserves their partnership by making each life more dependent on the other. (Chapters 607–608)

Brutus's first response is an unplanned metamorphosis. Bone plates form over parts of his ordinary body, he gains supernatural silence and destructive sonic howls, and a new internal well of power lets him assume a much larger form covered in spiked bone armour. His claws, fangs, and tail become armoured weapons, while the howls deliver force at range without shaking nearby glassware outside their directed path. Afterward he can shrink again, retaining some bone plates in his resting form. (Chapter 610)

The precise cause of those features remains uncertain. Alex offers hypotheses rather than a confirmed mechanism: the silence-spider that Brutus and Theresa first fought may have impressed its traits on his life force, while Theresa's wish that he keep pace, protect himself, and attack at range may have shaped the transformation. Once recovered, Brutus proves the new form in coalition battles, using armour, silence, howls, and augmented strength while sharing Theresa's senses and healing through their bond. (Chapters 610–841)

The final campaign

When unnatural fire clouds approach Welling, Brutus smells the burning before the threat arrives and shows fear rather than mindless bravado. Alex assigns him with Theresa and other fighters to organize and defend Welling while the spellcasters divert the clouds. Later, at the burned origin site, Brutus searches through ash and bone, but the absence of a usable trail demonstrates that even three enhanced noses cannot recover evidence the Ravener has erased. (Chapters 842–844)

Across Thameland, he and Theresa rescue as many people as they can before regrouping, and he comforts her when the limited time and enormous death toll weigh on her. In Och Fir Nog they join the team destroying fae gates, then peel away to remove another dungeon core because the surrounding battle is secure. Brutus's armour and Theresa's Twinblade let the pair confront hive-queens and other spawn that once would have terrified or overwhelmed them. (Chapters 850–856)

In the Ravener's tunnels, confined space makes Brutus especially valuable because many large spells could collapse passages or cook allies. He hears through rock, scents spawn, warns the party, and joins the front-line fighters against the strongest monsters. His sonic cones pulp flesh and crack stone, his spiked armour turns a charge into an attack, and his jaws finish survivors while Theresa's six-blade style protects their shared flanks. (Chapters 862–895)

Brutus survives the destruction of the Ravener and the end of the divine cycle. In the postwar celebrations he remains unmistakably himself—affectionate with his family, eager for food, and willing to drag home a defeated spawn—despite the supernatural scale of his later form. When Theresa drinks the immortality elixir, Alex confirms that their deep blood-familiar connection shares its stronger benefits with Brutus. The final chapters therefore establish his place within the family's ageless future. (Chapters 894–907)

Appearance and personality

Brutus is a cerberus with one powerful canine body and three hound heads, initially about the size of a small horse. He has six watchful eyes, three sensitive noses and mouths, tough hide, heavy paws, and enough mass to carry Selina. After the blood ritual, bone plates remain on his shoulders, haunches, lower legs, paws, and elongated tail even when he is not using his full combat transformation. (Chapters 4–25 and 610–612)

He is loyal, cautious, proud, food-motivated, and openly affectionate with people he trusts. His three heads can monitor different directions or compete for attention, while whining, growling, nuzzling, and licking communicate his moods. Brutus can be frightened by heights or overwhelming threats, but fear does not erase his training; he looks to Theresa, follows commands, and repeatedly places himself between danger and family. (Chapters 4–28, 85–105, and 842–907)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Brutus begins as a naturally formidable but non-spellcasting cerberus. His original advantages are anatomy, senses, tough hide, strength, and Theresa's training. The blood-familiar ritual later adds supernatural traits, but the corpus deliberately leaves the ancient magic's exact shaping mechanism uncertain.

Cerberus body and senses

Three heads give Brutus three sets of jaws, eyes, ears, and scent organs. He can watch several directions, keep biting while another head searches, and follow trails ordinary humans miss. His strength lets him bowl over armoured creatures, crush bone, carry a child, and hold prey for Theresa. His hide resists lesser cuts, though powerful magic, Ravener-spawn, and divine weapons can still wound him. (Chapters 4–28, 85–105, and 256–398)

His senses make him a scout rather than an infallible detector. He recognizes death, hidden creatures, familiar scents, and approaching fire, but heavy odors can distress or confuse him, magical concealment can evade him, and a destroyed trail provides nothing to follow. Theresa's commands and other reconnaissance methods convert his reactions into useful information; without that teamwork, even an accurate warning might not reveal what the scent means. (Chapters 19–25, 256–264, and 842–844)

Hunting and coordinated combat

Theresa raised Brutus as a hunting hound, and he combines predatory instinct with learned discipline. He tracks, flanks, feints, waits for commands, attacks legs or vulnerable tissue, and guards noncombatants. In group fighting, force armour can protect his advance while a wizard or archer exploits whatever he pins. This coordination develops from forest hunts through dungeon battles into a partnership capable of breaking high-level Ravener-spawn. (Chapters 4–17, 23–28, 85–105, and 850–895)

His natural limitations are range and exposure. Before his transformation, airborne foes or creatures whose shells resist his teeth can leave him unable to contribute safely, and massed enemies can surround him. The blood-familiar form addresses these weaknesses without eliminating them: sonic attacks give him range and bone armour improves survival, but directed divine weapons and powerful spawn can still crack the armour or cause wounds shared through his bond. (Chapters 111–253, 610–618, and 675–725)

Alex creates the link through an old blood-magic ritual using prepared circles, tonics, glyphs, and an aeld staff; it is not an ability Brutus independently casts. The connection lets Theresa feel Brutus and improves her senses, while her reinforced life force strengthens him, extends his viable lifespan, and allows healing or life-enforcement gains to pass through the bond. The pair's latest fighting style treats those benefits as one coordinated system. (Chapters 607–610 and 617–895)

The link's central limit is mutual risk. Death critically wounds the survivor's life force, recovery may require mana-to-life conversion or divine healing, and Theresa's death after Brutus exceeds his natural lifespan could immediately end his extended life. The ritual also leaves short-term exhaustion, and its permanent nature means neither partner can treat an injury or reckless charge as an individual cost. (Chapters 607–610)

In the latest state of the bond, Theresa drinks Alex's immortality elixir and its effects pass to Brutus. Alex explains that a blood familiar receives more benefit than a conventional familiar, so Brutus shares her freedom from ordinary aging as well as enhanced durability and recovery. This extension still does not erase the bond's mutual danger or make either partner immune to violent death. (Chapter 902)

Bone armour, silence, and sonic howls

Brutus draws on a new internal well to enlarge himself and cover his body in dense, spiked bone plate. Armour sheaths his fangs and claws into serrated weapons, turns his tail tip into a spiked club, and lets his body damage enemies on impact. He can withdraw the major transformation, so the power is a controlled combat state rather than an irreversible replacement of his ordinary form. (Chapter 610)

The same evolution grants supernatural silence and three directional sonic howls. Silence suppresses the sounds of his movement for stalking, while the howls project concentrated force capable of breaking laboratory walls, devastating flesh, and cracking stone. Their origin is not confirmed, and their demonstrated limit is scale: especially durable statues and major enemies can withstand or survive the blasts, so Brutus follows with charges and bites or relies on allies. (Chapter 610 and Chapters 617–895)
