Gel-Dor

Gel-Dor is the first mate of the Red Siren and the identical twin of its captain, Fan-Dor. His seamanship and Spear-and-Oar Dance help Alex Roth and Theresa Lu survive their first voyage to Generasi, beginning a friendship that lasts through the war.

Biography

The Red Siren to A Fine Evening and Anxious Morning

Gel-Dor gives Alex and Theresa extra cabin space when fear leaves the ship with few passengers, then performs the Spear-and-Oar Dance with Fan-Dor to honour Ek-u-Dari and protect the voyage. He quietly directs Theresa to watch Alex practise the dance, showing dry humour alongside hospitality. When a mana vampire attacks, Gel-Dor and his brother arm themselves and join the fight; their intervention helps kill the creature and carry their passengers safely to Generasi, creating a debt of trust between crew and newcomers. Old Acquaintances and Reunions to The Heroes' Paths are Not the Same

Later visits turn the emergency bond into an enduring friendship. Gel-Dor welcomes Alex and Theresa back aboard, exchanges news and jokes with them, and remains part of the extended circle that gathers for meals, celebrations, and departures. His continued presence beside Fan-Dor and Lucia shows that the Red Siren remains both his livelihood and family even as Alex’s life expands into the Greymoor expedition and the Hero conflict. Roth vs. Ram to The Coin of Silent Friends

During a violent ocean storm, Gel-Dor works with the crew while Alex’s magic helps prevent sailors from being swept away and the ship from being lost. His gratitude is practical as well as emotional: he later helps Alex obtain intelligence from sailors and northern contacts about routes and events relevant to Kymiland. The exchange reverses their earliest roles, with Gel-Dor now helping the former passenger navigate dangers beyond the ship, and he remains among the friends celebrating after the war. Appearance and personality

Gel-Dor is a selachar who is nearly identical to Fan-Dor, except that he lacks his twin’s facial scar. He is steady on a moving deck, dryly teasing, hospitable without being sentimental, and fiercely loyal to ship and crew. His banter with Fan-Dor is competitive, but their matched ritual and combat movements reveal deep familiarity and trust. (Chapters 19–24 and 191)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Gel-Dor is an experienced sailor and first mate skilled in shipboard balance, crew work, weather response, and fighting in cramped, moving conditions. He practises the Spear-and-Oar Dance with Fan-Dor: a rhythmic martial tradition performed with an oar and spear that serves as prayer, training, and coordinated combat movement. Together the brothers can bring weapons to bear quickly against threats aboard ship. (Chapters 20–24 and 677–679)

The corpus does not show Gel-Dor casting spells or assign him a formal magical tier. His effectiveness comes from physical skill, maritime judgement, cooperation with his twin, and a network of sailors able to exchange useful information.
