Fan-Dor — Mark of the Fool

Fan-Dor is the selachar captain of the Red Siren, a principled sailor who teaches Alex the Spear-and-Oar Dance and becomes a long-term ally.

Biography

The Red Siren to The Heroes' Paths are Not the Same

Fan-Dor accepts Alex's family as passengers when other ships avoid Brutus. Though the Red Siren is financially strained by an earlier mana-vampire incident, he sets clear rules, lets Selina ride free because of her wonder at the ship, and patiently answers her questions. When Alex asks to learn the ceremonial Spear-and-Oar Dance, Fan-Dor adapts the lesson to an untrained student by substituting a mop for a weapon. The training gives Alex a movement vocabulary the Fool's Mark will permit and directly helps him survive a second mana vampire hidden aboard the ship. (Chapters 19–25)

Fan-Dor and Gel-Dor answer Alex's call during that attack and finish the wounded creature with their weapons. The captain then returns the passage fee because a passenger nearly died under his watch, while Alex shares the bounty in recognition of their rescue and teaching. The exchange creates a friendship rather than settling a transaction. Fan-Dor continues Alex's dance instruction on later visits, and Alex eventually credits the brothers among the people whose knowledge made his independent path possible. (Chapters 25–438)

Fan-Dor's teaching persists in Alex's combat style and in the movements Alex passes to Claygon. He and Gel-Dor later join Lucia's transport network, bringing their maritime experience and knowledge of ports, guilds, and smuggling routes to her growing company. Before Alex's Kymiland expedition, the brothers brief his household on the Guild of the Red Mouse and likely dangers, choosing practical intelligence and supply work over direct involvement in another land war. (Chapters 590–706)

Chaos in the Wild and Order in the Material to Celebration

In the postwar era, the Red Siren has been modified to fly as well as sail. Fan-Dor delights in dropping the ship into the sea while Gel-Dor complains about the risk, then delivers goods for Alex to inspect as part of the continuing business. At Alex and Theresa's wedding, Fan-Dor cries openly during the ceremony and later performs the Spear-and-Oar Dance with his brother for the guests, completing his movement from a struggling captain hired for passage to a friend celebrating the family he once carried to safety. Appearance and personality

Fan-Dor is a large selachar with webbed fingers, sharp teeth, and an immense scar across his face. He is physically identical to his twin brother Gel-Dor apart from the scar, and is generally seen with a spear or at the wheel of the Red Siren. (Chapters 19–25)

He is boisterous, fair, proud of his ship, and serious about responsibility. Fan-Dor jokes freely and enjoys frightening Alex during dance lessons, but refunds money after danger, respects passengers who respect his crew, and treats Selina's curiosity with warmth. His postwar enthusiasm for a flying ship shows that age and experience have not diminished his appetite for wonder. (Chapters 19–25 and 901–906)

Spear-and-Oar Dance

Fan-Dor practices a sacred selachar dance dedicated to Ek-u-Dari and rooted in spear and oar movements. Its basics include five stances, five foot positions, five guards, jumps, and flourishes; weapons are easier to balance than oars, so he begins Alex with the harder but safer tool. The discipline builds balance, footwork, retreat, guards, and fluid transitions useful in actual combat, though Fan-Dor distinguishes a beginner's practice from mastery requiring years. Spearfighting and teamwork

Fan-Dor and Gel-Dor fight in practiced unison, closing on the mana vampire with spear and oar after Alex wounds it. Their coordination finishes an enemy dangerous to spellcasters, but the victory depends on Alex exposing and injuring the creature first; the brothers are skilled martial sailors, not shown as invulnerable monster hunters. (Chapters 23–25)

Seamanship and command

Fan-Dor navigates the Prinean Sea, reads weather, commands a multilingual crew, maintains passenger discipline, and later operates a vessel modified for flight. The Red Siren's airborne capability comes from Alex's modifications rather than a personal spell attributed to Fan-Dor. (Chapters 19–25 and 901)
