Gabrian

Gabrian is a former Chosen of Uldar who survives his Hero cycle, masters life enforcement, and becomes First Apostle of Uldar’s hidden church. His need to give his losses a divine purpose hardens into fanaticism, making him one of Alex Roth’s most dangerous pursuers.

Biography

The Chosen who became First Apostle

Gabrian grows up as a blacksmith’s son, content with village life until golden scales appear on his forehead when he turns eighteen. The other four Heroes die within his first year of war, leaving him to train in spellcraft, combat, divinity, and eventually life enforcement until he defeats the Ravener after five years. Unable to return to the life he expected or outlive a family in peace, he finds Uldar’s Rise and accepts its doctrine that repeated cycles serve a hidden plan. That belief turns his dead companions’ suffering into proof of purpose and carries him over centuries to leadership as First Apostle. (Chapter 643)

After losing Uldar’s Rise, Gabrian accepts the Stalker’s aid and leads the displaced church in a pursuit of Alex. He treats setbacks as tests of faith, helps devise holy-soil traps against teleportation, and continues the hunt even when a Ravener-spawn orders the church home. In Uldar’s sanctum, the sight of the dead god does not free him from the path; it shatters his ability to reconsider it. He fights on, mutilates and nearly kills Alex, but the Traveller’s power lets Alex sever first his arm and ultimately his head, ending both Gabrian and the church’s leadership. Appearance and personality

Gabrian is a powerfully built man with dark hair, a deep calm voice, and the golden scales of the Chosen on his forehead. Life enforcement keeps him youthful despite more than five centuries of life. As a boy he is shy, obedient, patient, and gentle; as First Apostle those traits become discipline, command, and inflexibility. He can read minute threats in an opponent’s body language, yet his absolute faith prevents him from adapting when Uldar’s deception is exposed. (Chapters 643–644 and 767–771)

Magic, abilities, and skills

As a Chosen, Gabrian receives lesser forms of the other Heroic gifts, then builds on them through centuries of spellcraft, sword training, divine practice, and life enforcement. The latter transforms his lifeforce, extends his life, strengthens his body, and permits severe recovery: his arm regrows after Alex tears it off at Uldar’s Rise. He combines extraordinary speed and strength with sword-and-shield skill, flight, elemental spells, healing, divine lightning, barriers, and perception refined by long experience. Gabrian can impose interdictions through divine commands. With sanctified soil, he blocks mana channelling and teleportation in an affected area, making preparation and a connection to Uldar’s power central to the effect. He is not invulnerable: coordinated traps wear down his followers, the Traveller’s teleportation can overcome resistance under exceptional conditions, and neither life enforcement nor healing saves him after decapitation. His latest state is dead, with his severed head witnessed after the battle. (Chapters 708 and 759–771)
