Katarina

Katarina Pellè is the Demoness Sect's Saintess of White, an ancient Demoness of Unaging who participated in the Pale Disaster and later served the Primordial Demoness through political conspiracies, the pursuit of Trissy, and the defense of the special mirror world. Her survival repeatedly depends on the difference between a body, a mirror substitute, and a separately prepared mirror self; the supplied corpus never establishes that an unrelated duplicate replaces her. Biography

Role in the Central Conflict

Katarina first appears aboard the Black Death when Azik Eggers recognizes her from more than a millennium earlier. She confirms that she fought beside Death's forces during the Pale Disaster and survived its final divine battle by advancing, while her conversation with Azik shows that she values upheaval and the recovery of dangerous old identities more than stability. She is also revealed to be Tracy's mother: Katarina deliberately allowed Helene to escape so Tracy's pain and desire for change would help her endure advancement, a decision that combines genuine investment in her child with the Demoness Sect's coercive philosophy that all of them must approach “Primordial.” (Chapters 588–589)

In Backlund, Katarina works with George III's faction and assists Viscount Stratford, confirming that the royal conspiracy and Demoness Sect remain connected. She binds Trissy Cheek during Stratford's trap, but Trissy escapes through a prepared mirror connection. Katarina later explains that the Sect supported George III in return for a Sequence 1 Conqueror characteristic intended for sacrifice to the Primordial Demoness; after that exchange, her immediate mission becomes recovering the Grade 0 artifact Trissy stole, because it is tied to Primordial's awakening. Her information about the secret mausoleums gives Klein Moretti the opening he needs to disrupt George III's apotheosis. (Chapters 1019–1020, 1031–1032, and 1110)

Klein finds Katarina through Tracy's blood and uses the Red Angel evil spirit's honorific name to lure the two ancient enemies together. Medici ambushes her inside the mirror world and leaves her apparently reduced to blood, after which Klein performs spirit channeling under Evernight's power. This is not her death: Medici has subdued a living Katarina, and she deliberately answers while maintaining the semblance of a confused spirit. Once Klein leaves, she resumes her living body and bargains from a position of constrained survival. Medici releases her only after inducing her to recite his honorific name and surrender blood, media through which he can watch and affect her; both sides then continue their partnership while privately trying to manipulate the other. Katarina and Medici remain linked through the failure of George III's ritual and Trissy's self-destructive intervention. After the war, Katarina is recalled to Demoness Sect headquarters and carries the Red Angel evil spirit through the mirror world in her own body. Amon intercepts them, and Medici takes control of Katarina's body to negotiate. The scene makes the vessel distinction explicit: Katarina remains the embodied Demoness, while the male voice and decisions during the negotiation belong to the possessing Red Angel evil spirit. During the apocalypse-era assault on the Primordial Demoness, Katarina is one of the colored Demonesses of Unaging defending the depths of the special mirror world. She wields Love's Dread against Emlyn White, using its Catastrophe power and her own substitutions to survive his attacks. When the battlefield collapses, she allows one body to perish and revives through a mirror self outside the destroyed region. That successful resurrection does not cleanse the malice Emlyn planted in her psyche: because body and mirror self share a connected mind, he revives inside that connection, ignites her desires and blood, and continues affecting both selves despite repeated substitutions. Appearance and personality

Katarina has black hair, blue eyes, snow-white skin, and an elegant beauty that can appear mature in one moment and like that of a sixteen- or seventeen-year-old maiden in another. She commonly wears a simple, sacred white gown with high slits. Her Sequence 3 charm is not merely cosmetic: Klein has to avert his gaze and use Cogitation to resist it, while her controlled shifts between purity, playfulness, and maturity make her apparent age and bearing difficult to fix. She presents herself as whimsical, affectionate, and easily provoked, yet this surface repeatedly conceals calculation. Katarina offers Azik dangerous help because the resulting change interests her, engineers Tracy's suffering as an advancement aid, and performs confusion during Klein's channeling so convincingly that even her captors debate the act afterward. Medici identifies her deliberate strategy as appearing emotionally transparent so an opponent will underestimate her; her final fight likewise shows immediate tactical adaptation when charm fails against Emlyn. Pathways and abilities

Katarina is a Sequence 3 Demoness of Unaging. She had already become a demigod near the end of the Fourth Epoch and survived the Pale Disaster by advancing, but had not reached angelhood more than a thousand years later. The corpus treats that longevity as a pathway state rather than ordinary biological immortality, and her late battles show that Unaging survival still requires intact revival arrangements and can be countered through attacks on the shared psyche or links between bodies. Charm, concealment, and Demoness techniques

Katarina can project different forms of feminine charm with matching features and bearing, affecting perception and emotion even when she is not directly attacking. She can make herself difficult for ordinary observers to detect, float with near-weightlessness, produce silent black flames, and use invisible spider silk to immobilize targets. Her Demoness arts also include severing the mystical connection between a person's blood and body, frustrating divination and prophecy that use the blood as a medium. Mirror traversal, substitution, and resurrection

Katarina can turn incorporeal, enter reflective surfaces, and travel through the mirror world's web of interlinked passages. Mirror Substitution lets an apparent body shatter into a mirror while she reappears elsewhere, but it is a reactive escape rather than blanket immunity: sufficiently fast or wide attacks can still force repeated substitutions, and an enemy familiar with the mirror world can lay an ambush inside her route. As a Demoness of Unaging, she also maintains a mirror self and dormant revival arrangements. After dying in the collapse of a mirror-world region, Katarina returns through a mirror self situated beyond the destroyed area. The counter is equally explicit: her body and mirror self possess connected psyches, so Emlyn's planted malice reaches both and lets him revive through her rather than being removed by death or substitution. Complete destruction therefore requires more than killing the current body, but contamination of the shared mind can bypass the physical redundancy. (Chapter 2568)

Petrification and catastrophe through Love's Dread

Activating Love's Dread lets Katarina assume the appearance of an exquisitely crafted doll whose charm provokes infatuation and protective desire. Against Emlyn, the Robe of Divine Blood turns that attraction toward possessiveness and malice, preventing the intended restraint. Katarina separately extends petrifying gray-white force from her hand, while the ring lets her unleash catastrophe; inside the mirror world, that catastrophe becomes fragmentation and structural collapse. • Tracy: Katarina is Tracy's biological mother and considers her youngest child unusually promising, but her “help” includes engineering emotional pain and accepting the gender transformation imposed by the pathway.
