Bishop Utravsky

Bishop Utravsky is the giantlike priest responsible for Harvest Church in Backlund and a Blessed of the Earth Mother despite belonging to the Warrior pathway. Once a violent pirate, he treats his ministry as atonement and asks Klein Moretti to destroy the murderous personality still living in the depths of his mind. He later coerces Emlyn White into attending church, but their relationship develops into a genuine partnership that culminates in their departure for the Southern Continent.

Biography

Role in the Central Conflict

Utravsky was born in Indaw on Midseashire's coast in the Feysac Empire. He loved fighting and killing, committed a serious crime, fled to sea, and became a ruthless pirate. An Earth Mother missionary converted him and persuaded him to make amends by spreading the faith abroad. Conversion did not erase his former self: the murderous personality remained within him and, strengthened by his danger of losing control, could eventually replace the gentle priest. Because an oath sworn on a holy artifact prevented him from asking his Church for direct aid before completing the missionary task, he sought an outside Beyonder capable of entering his deepest dream. Klein accepted the danger and defeated that old personality through the Mental Terror Candle, allowing Utravsky's present identity to regain control. In gratitude, Utravsky gave him the Apothecary formula and the Master Key. (Chapters 306–309)

Utravsky later captured Emlyn when the Sanguine tried to recover a captive and planted a psychological cue that repeatedly drew him back to Harvest Church. The method was coercive, but its consequence was not simple enslavement. Under Utravsky's direction, Emlyn learned the Earth Mother's teachings, treated plague victims, and gradually took responsibility for believers and Sanguine alike. When Emlyn's family attempted to free him, Utravsky defeated them too; the Sanguine consequently avoided a direct confrontation with an Earth Mother Blessed. Utravsky nevertheless trusted Emlyn with the Mental Terror Candle when Klein needed it and accepted that the relic might never return, describing loss and ending as part of the natural cycle. His status as a Blessed also makes him a doctrinal safeguard. Because the Earth and Moon pathways are vulnerable to influence from outside entities, he accepts the Earth Mother's scripture and direct revelation but treats unverifiable voices and dreams as possible heresy. He therefore rejects Emlyn's suspicious dream as not coming from the goddess. When an authenticated revelation orders action against the Rose School of Thought, however, Utravsky obeys: he and Emlyn organize volunteer Sanguine, and the last scene involving him has the bishop carrying his enormous sword as the force departs for the Southern Continent. Appearance and personality

Utravsky is more than 2.2 meters tall, with a mountainlike build, light-blue eyes, and the apparent age of a man in his forties or fifties. He wears the loose brown robes and bonnet of an Earth Mother priest. His quiet, gentle voice and preference for being called “Father” contrast with the physical pressure he produces in combat, especially when armored and holding an oversized dawn greatsword. His defining tension is between chosen mercy and remembered violence. He does not deny his crimes or imagine conversion alone has cured him; instead, he builds his life around atonement and accepts a potentially lethal confrontation with his own mind. That humility later appears in his willingness to risk the Mental Terror Candle and in his steady care for a reluctant Emlyn. His methods can still be forceful—most clearly in the planted cue—but his later decisions favor service, education, and collective duty over domination. (Chapters 306–309, 368–372, and 801)

Pathways and abilities

Utravsky is a Sequence 6 Dawn Paladin of the Warrior, or Giant, pathway rather than a Planter-pathway priest. His body possesses exceptional strength, speed, durability, and close-combat ability. He can summon nearly weightless Dawn Armor and conjure weapons such as the Sword of Dawn; damaged armor can recover while the power is maintained. He also releases dawn light over an area to dispel illusions, exorcise wraiths and specters, and weaken evil spirits. Hurricane of Light combines destructive radiance with purification, making it especially dangerous to undead targets. (Chapters 307–309)

These powers favor direct combat, defense, and purification rather than subtle mystical effects. His old personality moves through layers of the Mental Terror Candle's dream world, uses armor and a greatsword with frightening agility, and attempts deception as well as force, demonstrating that tactical experience remains important even with a Dawn Paladin's physical advantage. The light can counter many illusions and incorporeal enemies, but the pathway does not make him immune to psychological division or loss of control; that internal instability is precisely why he needs Klein's help. Utravsky also handles powerful artifacts with enough expertise to use the Mental Terror Candle for treatment and psychological suggestion. That is an artifact-derived capability, not a native Dawn Paladin power. His status as a Blessed reflects recognition by the Earth Mother and access to verified revelation, but the corpus does not show him acquiring powers from the Earth or Moon pathways. Relationships

• Klein Moretti: Klein risks the Mental Terror Candle to defeat Utravsky's murderous former personality. Utravsky repays him with a formula and the Master Key and later permits Emlyn to lend Klein the candle.
• Emlyn White: Utravsky initially keeps Emlyn at Harvest Church through a planted cue. Repeated service turns that coercive beginning into mentorship and cooperation, and they ultimately deploy together to the Southern Continent.
• Church of Earth Mother: The faith that gave Utravsky a path toward atonement. Though his potion pathway differs from the Church's usual pathways, he is recognized as a Blessed and trusted to authenticate revelations.

• Mental Terror Candle: An ancient dragon relic that draws users into the deepest layers of a target's mind. Death inside its dream is real, and failing to escape within roughly five minutes can leave the user permanently unconscious. Utravsky uses it to confront his old self and later to place a cue in Emlyn, but its effects are not his innate abilities. (Chapters 307–309 and 368–372)
• Master Key: A mystical key that opens ordinary locks and some mystical barriers or passages through modest obstructions. Its bearer can become lost at random; Utravsky gives it to Klein after the mind-world battle. (Chapter 309)
• Unnamed blood-transfusion artifact: An alternative reward Utravsky offers Klein. Blood stored for twelve hours can be reinfused to remove fatigue, ease illness and injury, and strengthen the body, but the initial extraction causes twelve hours of weakness. Frequent use risks irrationality and permanent frailty, while carrying it too long makes the bearer neurotic. (Chapter 309)
