Taren

Taren is a Dark Dream Extractor who turns grief into an increasingly demanding career. Beginning as a Newbie seeking purpose after his girlfriend's death, he earns team leadership and eventually reaches Veteran rank. (Chapters 196, 347, and 421–453)

Biography

Purpose through work and advancement

After Taren's girlfriend dies in the Crimson Sea disaster, his life outside Dark Dream feels empty and he asks Nick for more work and responsibility. Nick recognizes the grief but refuses to grant authority merely as consolation, instead giving Taren additional duties and watching whether the commitment persists. Taren does persist: he becomes a leader among the Newbies, endures the painful teamwork required around the Blaze, and increasingly defines himself through career and power. He reaches Veteran rank in his early thirties and becomes, with Jenny, one of the few people whose opinion matters when Dark Dream's sale is debated. His reluctant agreement helps the company merge into Solace, after which he still directs search work; no later passage establishes his final fate. (Chapters 196, 347, 421–453, 503, and 518)

Appearance and personality

Taren is an average-height man with black hair. Grief initially leaves him aimless, but he responds by pursuing work, authority, and advancement with unusual intensity. He is willing to endure severe pain during Extractor work and becomes openly ambitious, though his hesitation over selling Dark Dream shows that career focus does not erase his attachment to the company that gave him purpose. Abilities and Zephyx

Taren advances from Newbie to Veteran, establishing substantial growth in physique, Barrier capacity, and Zephyx reserves. He can work with the Blaze only through painful coordinated contact and asks Nick to pull his arms away when his endurance expires.
