Jenny
Jenny, originally introduced as Jennifer, is one of Dark Dream's first Zephyx Extractors and its longest-serving employee apart from Nick. Her honesty, composure, loyalty, and concern for her colleagues make her a trusted team leader, sniper, and information gatherer. Although her Dreamer-derived ability is poorly suited to open battle, its power to induce sleep and perceive dreams becomes decisive when Sky Dream investigates an assassination conspiracy. (Chapters 53–57, 310, 373, and 519–520)
Biography
Choosing Dark Dream and becoming an Extractor
Jenny enters Dark Dream as a woman from the Dregs seeking a path into Zephyx extraction. During Nick's interview, she speaks candidly about escaping the Riker Strikers rather than pretending she could defeat them, and she analyzes their cruelty without romanticizing her own courage. Nick values that mix of honesty, cold judgment, and willingness to fight when necessary. Jenny accepts the job with gratitude because even one successful shift can secure months of taxes for her and her partner, giving her a concrete route out of economic precarity. (Chapters 53–56)
Her first encounter with the Dreamer tests the confidence that won her the position. Its presence triggers intense instinctive fear, but Jenny uses the information Nick supplied to keep her rational judgment in control, allows it to put her to sleep, and completes the full eight-hour session. She emerges with a synchronized ability, substantial pay, and proof that she can survive the work that left Horua catatonic. She then learns the Containment Unit procedure and becomes part of Dark Dream's daily extraction schedule rather than remaining a one-time experiment. (Chapters 55–58)
Jenny's loyalty is personal as well as financial. After Pator is exposed as a spy, she is shaken by the prospect of a child being killed and by the revelation that Nick has killed before. She cannot take Nick's responsibility from him, but chooses to wait with Trevor and Wyntor until he returns and then urges him to take time away from work. Her later attempt to offer deeper emotional support is rejected by Nick, who insists they are only colleagues; Jenny respects that boundary even when she notices that he becomes colder and more distant. (Chapters 89–94 and 115)
Holding Dark Dream together after the Crimson Sea
As Dark Dream expands, Jenny becomes one of its senior Johns and helps Nick and Trevor approach newly acquired Specters. She carries her gun when they negotiate with Monica and already functions as a trusted operational subordinate rather than a novice. The Crimson Sea disaster then kills many employees, destroys much of the city, and sends Dark Dream into chaos. Jenny gathers the survivors and urgently calls Nick back when guilt leaves him staring at the devastation, insisting that a leader must address immediate dangers before yielding to grief. Her response is driven by responsibility to the remaining staff, even though Trevor's death and Nick's apparent indifference make her furious. (Chapters 238, 241, and 293–294)
Jenny does not enter the damaged building recklessly. She assembles the surviving Extractors, reports what she knows, and leaves the Containment Units for someone strong enough to survive any breach, a decision that protects the staff from the dangerous Specters still inside. Although the crisis temporarily destroys her belief that Dark Dream is more humane than other Manufacturers, she continues doing the work needed to stabilize it. When the company reorganizes, her experience and Mid-John strength make her the sole team leader, with her extraction workload reduced so she can coordinate the remaining Johns and rebuild operations alongside Nick. (Chapters 294–310)
The relationship with Nick remains complicated rather than blindly devoted. Jenny has known him for years and once believed him reliably empathetic; his shutdown during the disaster makes her consider leaving, while his eventual return to responsibility preserves enough trust for them to keep working together. This willingness to confront him distinguishes her loyalty from obedience. She supports Dark Dream because the company and its people matter to her, and she accepts leadership precisely when the organization is weakest and most in need of someone able to act without waiting for Nick's emotional recovery. (Chapters 293–310)
Senior leadership, fieldwork, and the end of Dark Dream
Two years later, Jenny is a Peak John leading Dark Dream's Johns and is the company's longest-serving employee besides Nick. On her first expedition outside Crimson City, she occupies the protected rear of Nick's formation, watches over the forward fighters, and uses her powerful rifle to sever a spider-like Specter's limb without hitting Petra. She then descends into a Nightmare-tainted hole to retrieve the unconscious teammate, keeps the suppressed Specter covered, and helps bring both person and quarry home. The mission confirms her value as a disciplined sniper and senior field operative rather than only an administrator. (Chapters 347–373)
Her memories of Dark Dream's founding make her sensitive to how much the organization and Nick have changed. Wyntor and Trevor are dead, Nick has become isolated and work-driven, and Jenny is the only remaining employee from the earliest group. She nevertheless refuses to treat every replacement as a loss: she values Taren's drive and believes Julian is her best friend, unaware that he is a Specter controlling the company. That misplaced friendship later leaves her and the staff shaken when Julian dies and his nature becomes public, but it also explains why they need Nick's return to restore direction. (Chapters 373, 386, 489, and 503)
Becoming a Veteran requires Jenny to choose between personal safety and the expectations of senior leadership. She initially hesitates to endure Zephosis, especially because the process requires three days without sleep, food, or water. After her relationship ends and ordinary social life feels increasingly remote from her Extractor experience, she decides to commit more fully to her work. She survives Zephosis through willpower, advances her ability, and becomes a Veteran. When Nick later proposes merging the vulnerable Dark Dream into Solace, Jenny accepts the loss of the old name as the best way to protect its people and Specters. (Chapters 452–453 and 503)
Serving Sky Dream and surviving in Nick's memory
Under Sky Dream, Jenny remains a team leader and finally receives an assignment tailored to the information-gathering side of her ability. After an attempted assassination of Nick, she enters the Dreamer's induced vision of the captured gate guardian and extracts the conspirators' faces, roles, and auras. The victim's torture makes Jenny vomit twice, demonstrating that dream reading exposes her to disturbing content, but she persists until she can identify the guilty. Disguised by a cloak, she then checks every upper-layer household and distinguishes conspirators from uninvolved families, while questioning the harm Nick's punishments will cause innocent relatives. (Chapters 519–520)
This investigation is Jenny's last direct action in the supplied corpus. Later, Nick thinks of her as the one early companion who survived close association with him for a long time, a fact that both comforts him and feeds his fear that intimacy endangers others. The recollection shows the lasting importance of her steady presence after Wyntor, Trevor, Julian, and Albert are gone, but it does not establish where she served afterward, whether she advanced beyond Veteran, or how her life ultimately ended. (Chapter 537)
By the time Nick reflects on the last human who still personally knows him, Jenny is included among the many people from his former life who have died. The corpus supplies no circumstances, date, or cause for her death, so her final confirmed professional state remains that of a Sky Dream team leader and Veteran. Her later legacy is therefore relational rather than a narrated final battle: she represents one of the longest continuities between the young, hopeful Nick of Dark Dream and the distant figure he eventually becomes. (Chapters 537 and 956)
Appearance and personality
Jenny is introduced as a woman in her early twenties with brown hair and dirty clothing characteristic of someone living in the Dregs. Years later she is described as a beautiful young woman with considerable wealth, although her long exposure to Specters makes her outlook and interests increasingly unlike those of ordinary non-Extractors. The corpus does not provide a more detailed account of her height, build, eyes, or later-age appearance. (Chapters 53 and 453)
She is honest, direct, and difficult to frighten into passivity. Jenny does experience fear—from Riker, the Dreamer, unfamiliar Specters, and field danger—but openly admits when retreat is rational and then acts deliberately. She cares deeply about colleagues, challenges Nick when he neglects them, and tries to support him without seeking authority over his emotions. Leadership adds pragmatism without eliminating empathy: during the upper-layer purge she identifies criminals as ordered, yet still questions consequences imposed on innocent spouses and children. (Chapters 53–55, 90–94, 293–310, and 520)
Abilities and Zephyx
Jenny is a human Zephyx Extractor who rises from a newly attuned recruit to Veteran. Her synchronized power originates with the Dreamer, and she later evolves it through the Dung Heap. The ability specializes in sleep, dreams, and tranquilizing gas rather than direct damage, so Jenny builds a complementary sniper role around long-range equipment and team protection. Her latest confirmed formal level is Veteran; the corpus does not establish a later sublevel or her condition immediately before death. (Chapters 55–57, 350, 453, 520, and 956)
Sleep induction and dream perception
Jenny first activates her Dreamer-derived ability by placing both hands on Nick's head. The contact makes him drowsy, weakens his limbs, and begins closing his eyes; removing her hands reduces the effect. She explains that a completed induction creates unusually deep sleep, making the target difficult to wake even through loud noise. This makes covert use more practical than open combat, since she needs access to the target's head and initially imagines approaching someone who does not recognize her as an enemy. The corpus does not give an exact induction time, duration, maximum target level, or Zephyx cost. (Chapter 57)
While maintaining contact, Jenny can also perceive part of a sleeping person's dreams. At first she can only sense fragments and cannot control the dream as the Dreamer can. With the Dreamer shaping a Specialist's visions, however, she eventually extracts recognizable faces, approximate roles, and auras from the previous month. This combination turns her into an Informant capable of identifying conspirators without names. The method has important limits: she depends on another power to create directed dreams, must endure their content herself, and twice vomits when the Dreamer's torture overwhelms her before she completes the investigation. (Chapters 57, 400, and 519–520)
Tranquilizing gas
Jenny evolves the Dreamer's ability through the Dung Heap before reaching Peak John. The advancement allows her to release tranquilizing gas around herself, giving the otherwise contact-dependent sleep power a limited combat application. The text establishes the surrounding gas and its tranquilizing purpose but does not state its radius, onset speed, duration, selectivity, or effectiveness against stronger Extractors and Specters. No representative battle shows it overcoming an opponent, so it remains a demonstrated capability rather than proof that she can disable enemies at her own level. (Chapter 350)
Sniper role and Zephyx rifle
Jenny chooses a sniper rifle because she considers herself physically disadvantaged in direct fighting and wants to support protected teammates from outside close combat. Her first rifle is a long black weapon purchased after she becomes an Extractor. By Peak John, she carries an advanced model that consumes her Zephyx to form its projectile and continuously reserves half her supply for a prepared first shot. That round can drain roughly half of a stronger Veteran's expensive Barrier, showing exceptional burst power for her level. (Chapters 86 and 350)
The rifle's strength creates severe resource limits. After the first shot, forming another round takes about five seconds; because the reserve is already depleted, the second projectile is weaker and leaves Jenny at dangerously low Zephyx. She therefore fights from a protected rear position and relies on allies to prevent enemies from closing the distance. Her shot against the spider Specter demonstrates the design working as intended: she fires through obscuring dust, avoids the captured teammate, and destroys a limb before the team contains the target. (Chapters 350–53, 364, and 367)
Leadership and field discipline
Jenny's most persistent non-innate capability is operational leadership. She schedules and manages Johns, gathers survivors during a city-wide disaster, refuses to send weaker Extractors into unverified Containment Units, and maintains Dark Dream when Nick and the CEO are absent. In the field she follows formations, keeps her weapon ready, handles suppressed Specters, and protects incapacitated teammates. These skills are learned through long service rather than a named Zephyx effect, and they do not erase rank limits: Nick judges her the best personality to lead Dark Dream but too weak to control all of its Adults as a new Veteran. (Chapters 293–310, 350–73, 386, 489, and 503)

Relationships
- Nick: Nick hires Jenny, guides her first Dreamer session, and remains her boss through Dark Dream and Sky Dream. Jenny is loyal but not passive: she supports him after Pator's death, respects his emotional boundary, and later condemns his withdrawal during the Crimson Sea crisis. Her long service, operational reliability, and survival make her one of his most enduring early allies. (Chapters 53–58, 89–94, 293–310, 373, 489–520, and 537)
- Wyntor Melfion: Wyntor inducts Jenny into Dark Dream, pays her unusually well, equips her, and recognizes her value. Jenny appreciates the opportunity and becomes loyal to the company he built, although their relationship remains mostly hierarchical rather than intimate. (Chapters 54–58 and 83–86)
- Trevor: Trevor is Jenny's fellow early recruit and teammate. They support Nick together after Pator's death, share the risks of Dark Dream's growth, and become part of Jenny's fond memory of the company's intimate beginnings. Trevor's death in the Crimson Sea disaster is one reason Nick's numb response wounds her so sharply. (Chapters 58, 83–94, 293–294, and 373)
- Julian Winter: Jenny comes to regard Julian as her best friend while he runs Dark Dream, unaware that he is a Specter manipulating the city. His exposure and death remove both a personal relationship she believed genuine and the protection that kept Dark Dream independent. (Chapters 373, 489, and 503)
- Dreamer: The Dreamer gives Jenny her synchronized ability and remains her regular extraction partner. Its power complements her dream perception during the gate-guardian interrogation, but the torture it creates also makes the work physically revolting and emotionally difficult for her. (Chapters 55–57, 258, and 519–520)
Items
- Sniper rifle: Jenny deliberately chooses a sniper rifle to compensate for her disadvantage in direct physical combat. Her later Zephyx-powered model keeps a costly projectile prepared and gives her exceptional first-shot force, but requires about five seconds to reload and leaves little reserve for continued fighting. (Chapters 86, 350, 364, and 367)
- Barrier: Jenny purchases a manually activated defensive Barrier early in her career. It can block most physical and force attacks but lacks an AI controller, drains her own Zephyx while active, and cannot form if a substantial object already occupies its boundary. (Chapters 84–85)
