Riker

Riker is the Specter leader of the Riker Strikers, a Dregs gang built around theft, assault, and assassination. The gang's apparently purposeless cruelty generates the fear and suffering on which he feeds, while his hidden service to Envy connects local violence to a far larger Specter hierarchy. Biography

The gang behind the legend

Dregs residents initially know Riker as a rumor: the Riker Strikers provide none of the rough order or services associated with other gangs, so their leader is suspected of being a Specter. Nick's investigation confirms the feeding logic behind their crimes and follows the organization back to Riker's sealed room. Riker maintains a charming human guise and lets human subordinates create suffering at a distance, sacrificing feeding efficiency for concealment and a durable social proxy. The arrangement makes him harder to identify, but the gang's unusual uselessness is also the clue that exposes him. (Chapters 53–54 and 224)

Abandoned by Envy

When Envy uses its relay to seize Nick, Riker and Monica learn that their master considers them expendable and intends to kill them. Submission can no longer buy survival, so Riker attacks the child projection with black wind full of tormented faces and both servants hide behind Nick to frustrate Envy's attempt to destroy its target. Nick's Aegis signal fills the room with dense red Zephyx, removing any realistic escape. Riker and Monica stop resisting and are taken into custody; the corpus does not document Riker's later fate clearly enough to call him dead. (Chapters 225 and 230)

Appearance and personality

Riker appears as a black-haired man with dark eyes and a charming, cold, calm voice. He can pass as a human leader and remain composed during extreme danger. His decision to resist Envy is pragmatic rather than altruistic: only after his master announces his death does he help Nick survive. (Chapters 53 and 225)

Abilities and Zephyx

Riker feeds on fear and suffering produced by his gang. He can emit black wind containing tormented faces, an attack strong enough to challenge an Envy projection briefly before its darkness annihilates the wind. His human disguise and organizational proxies provide concealment, but a greater power can overwhelm his attack, and Aegis's dense suppression field prevents escape. (Chapters 53–54, 225, and 230)
