Pator
Pator Tailor is Wyntor Melfion's young attendant, first confidant, and a covert informant planted by Ardum. His polite competence makes him indispensable during Dark Dream's founding, while the trust he earns gives him access to the company's secrets. When Wyntor discovers the betrayal, Pator's fear of losing his livelihood prevents a confession, and Nick kills him on Wyntor's order—an act that permanently alters both men's relationship with loyalty and responsibility. (Chapters 29–93, 128, 156–157, and 327–337)
Biography
Wyntor's attendant and first confidant
Pator enters Dark Dream as Wyntor's adolescent household servant, carrying messages and escorting Nick after his recovery. He follows a strict servant's discipline: when excluded from information, he says it is not his concern, obeys orders without argument, and maintains formal address even when Nick invites familiarity. That discretion makes him appear safe around sensitive business and reflects the training that has already placed him close to Wyntor inside the Melfion household. (Chapters 29 and 37–38)
As the company grows, Pator becomes its operational support. He cleans and refits the warehouse, brings physicians and candidates, introduces Jenny to daily procedures, runs messages, and covers Horua's care while Nick works. Wyntor is willing to entrust him with lethal cleanup as well as ordinary service, showing that Pator's usefulness goes beyond errands. Pator accepts long hours and extra work cheerfully, and his willingness to help makes him part of the small group on which Dark Dream's founders depend. (Chapters 45–58 and 77–79)
Wyntor later explains why that dependence is personal as well as practical. Pator has served him for two years and was the only person with whom he could speak openly in the oppressive family mansion. Wyntor consequently overlooks warning signs and shares access that he would test more aggressively in a newer employee. Pator's position as first confidant is precisely what makes his later spying consequential: he is not merely an outsider stealing documents but someone whose companionship helped Wyntor endure his family life. (Chapters 89–90)
Exposure, fear, and death
Pator's concealed allegiance begins years before Dark Dream. Recruited by Ardum when he was eleven, he initially views the work as a small way to earn credits, then remains trapped as the information becomes more serious. His polished obedience and poker face help him continue reporting while serving Wyntor, although his cold reaction to Horua's condition shows that the cheerful attendant is not emotionally indifferent. Later evidence therefore reinterprets his daily helpfulness as a mixture of genuine attachment, trained performance, and fear-driven concealment rather than simple loyalty to either brother. (Chapters 49, 89, 91, and 156)
Wyntor exposes the leak by giving each employee a different fact about the Screaming Coffin. Ardum's knowledge that Dark Dream owns a Possession Specter identifies Pator as the only possible source apart from Nick, whom Wyntor has tested for months. Pator continues caring for Horua after the confrontation, smiling and expressing concern for Jenny without knowing that Wyntor has already ordered his death. The same habits that made him trusted now leave him isolated from the decision being made around him. (Chapters 88–90)
Alone with the unresponsive Horua, Pator finally states the conflict he has hidden. He wants to stop harming Wyntor but believes confession will cost his qualifications, possessions, employment, Inner City residence, and every relationship he knows. Continuing feels like betraying his friends; stopping appears to mean punishment and the Dregs. He regrets accepting Ardum's offer yet cannot imagine surviving honesty. Before he can finish voicing that regret, Nick kills him from behind, preventing either confession or an attempt at repair. (Chapter 91; Chapter 156)
Pator's death changes the people who survive him. Wyntor cannot kill his former confidant himself and transfers the burden to Nick, then sends Pator's head to Ardum to fulfill a public threat. Nick recognizes Pator as an exploited child rather than a freely malicious enemy, and the killing helps end his earlier naivety while deepening his distrust of Wyntor's ethics. Dark Dream replaces one adolescent attendant with three shift workers, an institutional consequence that underlines how much labor and confidence had been concentrated in Pator alone. (Chapters 90–93, 128, 146, 156–157, 247, 327, and 337)
Appearance and personality
Pator is about fourteen at his death and is repeatedly described as a boy. The supplied chapters do not establish his hair, eyes, build, or clothing. His most distinctive outward trait is emotional control: Wyntor considers him excellent at keeping a poker face, although a colder expression briefly emerges when he sees Horua's condition. In his final private scene, that controlled public presentation collapses into trembling speech, tears, and sobbing as he admits the fear beneath it. (Chapters 29, 49, 89, and 91)
He presents himself as polite, diligent, cheerful, and attentive. He respects hierarchy, avoids asking for information outside his assignment, accepts extra paid work readily, and notices Jenny's distress even while his own life is unknowingly under threat. These behaviors are not proven to be entirely false: his confession shows sincere regret and describes Wyntor's people as friends. His central weakness is fear. Once spying gives him status and security, he cannot risk losing them, allowing an eleven-year-old's decision to harden into a betrayal he despises but continues. (Chapters 29, 55–58, 79, and 89–91)
Abilities and Zephyx
Pator is not assigned a confirmed Zephyx Extractor rank, named ability, or demonstrated supernatural power. Wyntor says he has been trained to handle sensitive and potentially lethal cleanup, but Pator never performs a fight or a Zephyx technique in the supplied chapters. Because the corpus establishes no formal attainment at all, much less a chronological sequence, a power-progression table would invent precision not present in the source. (Chapters 45–46 and 89–91)
Household and operational training
Pator's demonstrated competencies are those of a trusted Melfion servant. He follows compartmentalized instructions, carries confidential messages, maintains Dark Dream's workplace, coordinates medical and hiring logistics, and learns the routines needed to care for Horua. Wyntor also considers him trained to make a child's death appear accidental, although that action is proposed rather than shown. These skills make Pator valuable precisely because they combine discretion, practical care, and readiness for the Melfion family's harsher expectations. (Chapters 29, 37–58, and 77–79)
Concealment and its limits
His strongest non-supernatural skill is maintaining a credible public role across years of divided loyalty. Pator keeps a strong poker face, follows nondisclosure procedures, and earns enough trust to receive a unique company secret. That concealment fails against Wyntor's compartmentalized loyalty test, which requires no confession or surveillance: Ardum's repetition of Pator's fact exposes the channel immediately. Pator's final limitation is psychological rather than technical; he understands the damage he causes but fears the social and economic cost of stopping more than he can endure continued guilt. (Chapters 49, 55, and 88–91)
Relationships
- Wyntor Melfion: Pator serves Wyntor for years and becomes the only person with whom he can speak openly in the family mansion. Ardum's recruitment turns that intimacy into an intelligence channel. Wyntor ignores warning signs because of their history, then orders Pator's death when a compartmentalized secret proves the betrayal. (Chapters 29–89 and 91)
- Ardum: Ardum recruits Pator at eleven and uses him as a long-term source inside Wyntor's household and company. Pator initially accepts for money but later feels trapped between Ardum's arrangement and genuine attachment to Wyntor's circle; Ardum publicly denies that he was a spy after receiving his head. (Chapters 88, 91, 146, and 156)
- Nick: Pator supports Nick's work, helps care for Horua, and accepts an informal first-name relationship despite their rank difference. Nick later carries out Wyntor's execution order and comes to regard Pator as an exploited child, making the killing a lasting measure of how Wyntor uses his loyalty. (Chapters 29, 51–58, 79, 89–93, and 327–337)
- Horua: Pator performs much of Horua's daily care and uses the unresponsive boy as the only listener for his confession. His final words reveal both genuine regret and the impossible choice he believes Ardum's scheme has created, but Nick kills him before he can decide differently. (Chapters 49–58, 79, and 89–91)
- Jenny: Pator helps orient Jenny at Dark Dream and notices her distress on the day his betrayal is exposed. Jenny, already aware of the execution order, cannot respond honestly and is horrified by the death of someone she knew as a friendly young colleague. (Chapters 54–55 and 89–92)
Items
- No named associated item: Pator carries out household and company duties with ordinary keys and supplies, but the source and article brief establish no named notable item associated with him and permit no item-page link. (Chapters 51, 55, and 91)
