Nurse Alice

Nurse Alice is an Eternal Specter who crosses the world to kill anyone who expresses a wish for death, regardless of intent. Her gentle bedside manner disguises an absolute rule that claims hundreds or thousands of people a day. Much later, Nick forces her to choose between secrecy and survival; she responds by entrusting him with her unmatched knowledge of energy manipulation, survives an era reset, and remains a source of Zephyx after the Sun is destroyed. Biography

Answering the Sentence

Nurse Alice is already a global terror when Nick learns the formal Specter hierarchy. Whenever a person says something equivalent to wishing for death, she reaches them within moments and kills them even if the statement was a joke or later regretted. In the marketplace Nick remembers, she comforts a destitute woman, covers her eyes, kills her without visible pain, and gently lays down the body. That combination of kindness and inevitability makes her more damaging than many openly violent Specters because ordinary despair continuously summons her. (Chapters 7–8)

Her rule also shapes other Specters and human behavior. The Parasite avoids feeding on the bodies of her victims because she dislikes their desecration, while people learn to police even casual speech about suicide. Her influence is not a metaphorical reputation: it reaches across the entire planet, and a person who triggers her condition normally meets her only once. Nick's repeated failure to summon her during an earlier period of attempted suicide is presented as an unexplained exception, not as evidence that the Sentence is optional. An unreachable Eternal

By the time Nick trains inside Aegis, Nurse Alice is recognized as an Eternal whose scale makes even the Champion of Light insignificant by comparison. She normally appears personally rather than projecting a remote avatar, crossing global distances through extreme speed and later-demonstrated portals. Nick infers that she detects the Sentence without continuously perceiving every individual mind, but the corpus does not fully explain how her trigger distinguishes qualifying speech. Her mobility and Zephyx recovery keep Aegis from suppressing her until it can field several Peak Shields at once. (Chapters 606, 700, 897, and 936)

Choosing survival through Nick's rebellion

Nick deliberately speaks the Sentence to draw Nurse Alice into a private confrontation and demands her knowledge of energy manipulation. She sees through his abilities almost immediately, follows his global teleports, and attacks with a vast range of effects when he threatens to expose her disobedience to the Sun. Her resistance is motivated by survival rather than loyalty: she believes humanity cannot win and that teaching him will ensure her destruction. Only after Nick shows her a hidden city of powerful humans living beyond the Nightmare's reach does she accept that humanity may have a viable future. (Chapters 914–920)

Nurse Alice then commits more fully than Nick expected. She spends ten years preparing a database containing the Enlightened Ones' energy knowledge, her subsequent discoveries, and diagrams for her own abilities. After Nick secures the information, she deliberately deletes her memories of his most important secrets and of Pure and Star Energy manipulation, weakening her ability to expose him and restoring the strength of his perception-based power. The bargain changes her from a coerced source into a self-interested collaborator who stakes her continued existence on Nick's success. (Chapter 921)

Suppression, reset, and survival beyond the Sun

Aegis eventually deploys five Peak Shields and the Champion to exhaust and capture Nurse Alice. She could escape through her hundreds of abilities and superior manipulation of the Zephyx-built prison, but the Sun intends her suppression, so she submits and produces Zephyx through sacrificed workers. The process yields millions of times more Zephyx than her free activity and advances her to Early Eternal. This apparent defeat is therefore also the role for which her trigger and power were designed within the Sun's system. (Chapters 946–947 and 954)

At the era's end, Nick releases Nurse Alice on the Sun's order. She survives the reset, returns to killing those who speak the Sentence, and accepts Nick as the Sun's second-in-command despite having erased most of her memory of him. After the next humanity destroys the Nightmare and the Sun, Daniel orders her underground because humanity still needs her Zephyx. She immediately complies and survives the flood of Star Energy that kills most powerful Extractors on the surface, leaving her active but subordinated to the new human order. Appearance and personality

Nurse Alice appears as a girl in her late teens with a bright, kind smile and a clean pink nurse's uniform. She speaks warmly and empathetically to a summoned victim, kneels beside her, and closes her eyes with one hand before gently lowering the corpse. In private conflict with Nick, the same face becomes cold, threatening, and visibly angry, showing that the comforting presentation is a consistent professional manner rather than the limit of her emotional expression. (Chapters 8 and 914–920)

She is patient with victims but uncompromising about the Sentence, and her self-preservation governs her larger choices. She refuses Nick's request while she believes secrecy is safer, attacks when he can expose her, and changes course only when resistance becomes fatal and humanity's hidden strength makes cooperation rational. Once committed, she provides more knowledge than required and removes dangerous memories from herself. She also understands hierarchy: she follows the Sun, later accepts Nick's authority, and immediately obeys Daniel when the power balance changes. (Chapters 915–921, 959, and 983)

Abilities and Zephyx

Nurse Alice is an Eternal Specter and reaches Early Eternal after prolonged suppression by Aegis. She possesses hundreds of abilities and a level of Zephyx Manipulation described as the highest in the world, giving her exceptional versatility rather than one narrow combat method. Her demonstrated limits come from Star Energy, opponents who can change between human and Specter states, and her overriding need to survive; those constraints can make coercion or voluntary submission more effective than trying to overpower her outright. (Chapters 915–921, 947, and 954)

Sentence detection and execution

Her defining ability detects speech equivalent to a wish for death anywhere on Earth. She then reaches the speaker and kills them with a pass of her hand, regardless of whether the words were sincere, figurative, or joking. The death is immediate and apparently painless. The exact semantic boundary and detection mechanism are not supplied, and Nick later reasons that she is not directly sensing every person at all times, so the trigger should not be treated as omniscience. Global movement and combat versatility

Nurse Alice can travel roughly two thousand kilometers in a second and uses portals to follow Nick across ten thousand kilometers. In combat she produces darkness, lightning, fire, distortions, quakes, defensive earth, and attacks suited to different categories of Specter. Nick survives by switching between Force Specter, Physical Specter, and human states while deploying Star Energy technology; without those counters and the threat of the Sun, he acknowledges that her greater power and versatility would eventually win. Zephyx reading, manipulation, and memory control

By reading Zephyx manipulation lines, Nurse Alice identifies what unfamiliar abilities do within seconds, including hidden abilities that the Champion keeps in reserve. She can reproduce complex ability diagrams, alter her own memories, sense Nick through a concealment that fools the Champion, and escape a prison made of Zephyx if she chooses. This expertise is not literal omniscience: unfamiliar technology surprises her, Star Energy consumes her Zephyx, and deleting knowledge to protect Nick intentionally removes options she once retained. Zephyx production and suppression

Nurse Alice produces more Zephyx when a more powerful person is sacrificed to her. While free, her constant killing yields comparatively little; under Aegis, controlled work with volunteers produces millions of times more and eventually advances her to Early Eternal. Her containment is partly consensual because the Sun orders the role, and the text states that she could manipulate the Zephyx structure and escape. This makes the strongest unit an operational restraint backed by incentives and surveillance, not an absolute mechanical counter. (Chapters 947 and 954)

• Nick: Nick summons and coerces Nurse Alice for her knowledge, but his hidden city persuades her that humanity might truly survive. She gives him the product of millennia of study, erases memories that endanger him, and later obeys him as the Sun's second-in-command without clearly remembering their former alliance.
