Markus Julius

Markus Julius is the long-serving Governor and strongest human of Crimson Fungus City during Dark Dream's rise. He manages the city's rival Manufacturers through inspections, selective enforcement, and public pressure while also working as one of Kugelblitz's Heroes. His compromises help preserve an unstable balance, but Aegis ultimately judges his rule corrupt, removes him, and assigns him to guard a local stronghold. (Chapters 213–217, 377–379, 437, and 501–502)

Biography

Governing through pressure and compromise

Markus enters the Manufacturers' general meeting as the city's strongest human, and every executive falls silent until he formally opens proceedings. He orders a new inspection round, confirms taxes, and uses severe public demands to keep even young Manufacturers such as Dark Dream moving toward greater strength. Vernon Melfion later explains that Markus is privately pleased with Dark Dream and only requires it not to decline, showing that the Governor's intimidating public stance is partly a management tool rather than a complete statement of his judgment. (Chapters 213 and 217)

His rule is constrained by the same Manufacturers he oversees. Markus knows they all break laws and that Anatomy is maneuvering against Dark Dream, but stronger surveillance could unite four Heroes against him, a fight even the city's strongest individual could not survive. He therefore punishes exposed wrongdoing while silently allowing some illicit competition. This compromise prevents an immediate attack on the government, but it also normalizes selective enforcement and creates the conditions under which Aegis later calls his administration corrupt. (Chapter 377)

Guarding dangerous knowledge and the city

When Julian Winter and Nick reveal an Old World ruin, Markus treats secrecy as a global survival requirement rather than an opportunity for personal ownership. He explains that publicizing a technological advance too early will attract the Envious Researcher, insists that few people know the machine exists, and personally inspects the site. Inside, he uses costly Zephyx Manipulation to produce light, explains the ruin's weapons and armor, and acknowledges the limits of humanity's understanding. His response connects city authority to the larger technological war that ordinary Manufacturers cannot see. (Chapters 376–379)

Markus also intervenes when the Coral People's power threatens Crimson City's Heroes during the capture of a second Demon. He remains in the background until Ariel is attacked, then joins the battle with a spear and helps turn the fight. His choice prevents the loss of an essential Hero even though the competing Manufacturers are pursuing their own interests. The successful capture strengthens the city, but it also reinforces the system in which Markus must balance public office with personal work for Kugelblitz. (Chapter 437)

Removal from office and reassignment

Aegis's Liaison experiment ends Markus's governorship. The Left Arm deems him corrupt, and Simon delivers the order that he will guard the local stronghold instead. Markus angrily argues that he always paid Aegis's tribute, even after the Crimson Sea disaster, and predicts that Nick's proposed redistribution will bankrupt the city or provoke assassination. His defense reveals the standard by which he judged himself: maintaining tribute and political stability, not eliminating luxury or forcing the elite to share the city's burdens. He nevertheless surrenders the government's keys, contracts, contacts, and records before leaving with Simon. (Chapters 501–502)

Nick's later reforms make Markus a negative comparison for the old city. The abandoned Dark Dream building had been left leaning against the megastructure for years, which Nick sees as evidence of administrative neglect, and Nick associates Markus with bribes and the pursuit of personal happiness. These are Nick's retrospective judgments rather than a scene of Markus confessing; the directly shown record establishes his extravagant office, political compromises, and removal, but does not document a specific bribe transaction. (Chapters 501, 509, and 553)

Remembered after his generation disappears

The corpus does not show Markus's individual death or establish whether he remained at the stronghold until the end of his life. Thousands of years later, Nick lists Markus among the many former contacts who are all dead, placing him within the vanished generation that built and governed the prior era. His reassignment therefore closes his active story: he loses political authority but remains part of Aegis's defensive structure, and no later passage restores his office or overturns the Left Arm's judgment. (Chapters 502 and 956)

Appearance and personality

Markus is a middle-aged man with black hair who wears a suit in the colors of the city government. He moves slowly and methodically, speaks in a deep voice, and changes a room's atmosphere simply by entering; Nick initially struggles to breathe under the impression of his power. His later office occupies an entire floor and is filled with art, furniture, a pool, expensive drinks, and other luxuries, presenting a stark contrast to the Left Arm's barren workspace. (Chapters 213 and 501)

He is controlled, pragmatic, and conscious of appearances. Markus uses stern public demands even when privately satisfied, tolerates limited illegality to prevent a coalition from overthrowing the government, and prioritizes dangerous Old World knowledge without wasting time on pleasantries. He can also be defensive and status-conscious: removal provokes rage, and he treats full tribute as proof that he has governed honorably. His willingness to save Ariel and assist the Demon capture complicates the later corruption judgment, showing that indulgence and compromise coexist with genuine responsibility for the city's survival. (Chapters 217, 377–378, 437, and 501–502)

Abilities and Zephyx

Markus is a Hero and is described as the strongest Extractor in Crimson Fungus City, with Aria Light as his only plausible competitor. He works regularly with the Crimson Fungus, the city's suppressed Demon, but the corpus does not state which synchronized ability he received from it or narrate his advancement. His strength makes him dominant over lower-ranked officials, not invincible: four coordinated Heroes could still defeat him, a limitation that directly shapes his permissive approach to the Manufacturers. (Chapters 213, 377, and 378)

Zephyx Manipulation and concealment

Markus can manually manipulate Zephyx to create light without a device, suppressing the Nightmare's influence inside an underground ruin. Maintaining the light is costly enough that he tells Nick to hurry. He also conceals both himself and Nick while traveling past city guards, demonstrating control over notice or perception, although the text does not specify whether this is the same manipulation technique or another learned effect. These applications show refined skill but do not establish a named personal ability. (Chapters 378–379)

Hero-level combat

Markus can keep pace with Nick at high speed, protects himself and a companion from notice, and joins a battle among Heroes while carrying a long spear. His intervention helps rescue Ariel and defeat an exceptionally powerful former Aegis Agent whose strength had stalled four other Heroes. The battle does not isolate Markus's damage or reveal the spear's properties, so it supports his effectiveness as a high-level combatant without proving a unique offensive mechanic or establishing the weapon as an artifact. (Chapters 378–379 and 437)

Governmental and technical knowledge

As Governor, Markus has access to every Manufacturer's Specter records, inspection apparatus, Aegis warnings, and Old World containment policy. He understands the Envious Researcher's attraction to disseminated technology, the expensive method of releasing advances across many cities at once, and the basic operation of light weapons and dispersive armor. His knowledge is substantial but explicitly limited: as a mere Hero he is not included in Aegis's highest-level plans against Adversaries, and he cannot reproduce the ancient devices he examines. (Chapters 213 and 377–379)

Relationships

  • Nick: Markus first pressures Nick's small Manufacturer through city policy, later trusts him with a secret ruin, and finally dismisses his reform program as naïve. Nick delivers the notice ending Markus's governorship and later uses the old administration as a contrast for his own results. (Chapters 213–217, 377–379, 501–502, and 553)
  • Aria Light: Aria is Markus's nearest rival in personal power and succeeds him as Governor. Markus's political restraint partly reflects the danger posed by a coalition of Heroes like her, while his removal transfers city authority to the person Aegis expects to implement the Liaison experiment with Nick. (Chapters 377 and 501–502)
  • Julian Winter: Markus meets Julian as a senior Manufacturer leader and appreciates his unusually direct but respectful conversation. Julian brings him the Old World discovery, and Markus answers candidly because he judges the exchange genuine, without realizing Julian's hidden identity. (Chapters 376–379)
  • Left Arm: The Left Arm reviews Markus's administration and declares it corrupt. Her order removes him from office and sends him to stronghold guard duty; Markus protests her conclusion but complies with the reassignment. (Chapters 501–502)
  • Crimson City's Manufacturers: Markus regulates them through taxes, inspections, selective punishment, and deliberately severe public expectations. Their combined combat power limits what he can enforce, while his own employment with Kugelblitz creates an unavoidable conflict between neutral government and Manufacturer allegiance. (Chapters 213, 217, and 377)

Items

  • Markus carries a long spear when he joins the battle against the Coral People's forces. The corpus does not give the weapon a name, explain its construction, or establish that it is a unique artifact, so it is best treated as his demonstrated combat equipment rather than a signature item. (Chapter 437)
