Irwin
Irwin is a Peak Veteran sniper who joins Carl and Nick on Solace's expedition north of Crimson City. Grief over a teammate's death drives him to attack Nick, after which he loses his position and seeks a second chance at Dark Dream. (Chapters 400–416)
Biography
Grief, dismissal, and a second chance
Irwin begins the northern expedition as Solace's reserved sniper and Senser, obeying Carl even when he distrusts Nick's judgment. After Mark is killed by the Coral People, Irwin decides that Nick caused the death and refuses Carl's attempt to separate suspicion from evidence. He stages a photograph to make Nick appear murderous and then fires his rifle at him; Carl intercepts the shot, defeats and disarms his longtime friend, and Solace subsequently dismisses Irwin. Unable to find other work and consumed by guilt, Irwin asks Nick for a way to redeem himself. Nick offers employment rather than revenge, placing him directly beneath Nick but giving him no authority; Irwin thereby becomes Dark Dream's only experienced Peak Veteran among its newer Veterans. (Chapters 400–416, 452, and 503)
The corpus does not narrate Irwin's later career or death. Thousands of years afterward, Nick includes him among former associates who have all died, making Dark Dream's employment the last established change in Irwin's status rather than proof that his guilt or relationships were fully repaired. (Chapter 956)
Appearance and personality
Irwin is tall and thin, with long, unkempt black hair and cold eyes; his rifle is nearly as long as his body. He initially speaks in a distant, neutral manner, but Mark's death exposes an angry, accusatory side that overrides discipline and evidence. His later appeal to Nick shows remorse and a desire for purpose, although the corpus does not establish how completely he changed after joining Dark Dream. (Chapters 400, 407–415)
Abilities and Zephyx
As a Peak Veteran, Irwin has a Veteran's Barrier and physical capabilities. Carl identifies him as both a sniper and a Senser, but Solace deliberately keeps the mechanics of his sensing ability confidential. His principal demonstrated attack is a long-range rifle shot powerful enough to require Carl's immediate intervention; once Carl disables his Barrier and removes the rifle, Irwin cannot resist an Initial Expert at close range. A light also makes him blurry while hiding, though the text does not establish whether this is his own ability or Solace equipment. (Chapters 400, 405, and 408–409)
Relationships
- Carl: Carl has been Irwin's friend for about a decade and initially tries to calm him after Mark's death. Their bond does not stop Carl from blocking the assassination attempt, subduing Irwin, and preserving his life by giving him Zephyx. (Chapters 407–409)
- Nick: Irwin blames Nick for Mark's death and attempts to kill him. Nick later accepts Irwin's request for redemption and hires him at Dark Dream while withholding command authority. (Chapters 407–416)
Items
- Irwin uses an almost body-length rifle and a camera-like device during his attempt to frame and shoot Nick. Neither item receives a name or unique mechanics in the corpus. (Chapters 400 and 408)
