Carl

Carl is Solace's vice-chief Zephyx Extractor and the leader of an expedition north of Crimson City. His caution and willingness to judge evidence independently preserve both Nick's life and his grieving friend Irwin's after the mission collapses. (Chapters 400–409)

Biography

Expedition leadership and divided loyalties

Carl leads Nick, Irwin, and Mark toward the coral sea, sharing the discovery with Nick as a gesture of goodwill but warning him not to create noise or use Zephyx in the exposed area. When Nick senses danger, Carl doubts the explanation yet accepts the safer course and orders the team into hiding. Mark is nevertheless killed, placing Carl between Irwin's grief-driven accusation and Nick's account. Carl insists on evidence and tries to calm his friend; when Irwin stages a photograph and fires at Nick, Carl blocks the shot, defeats and disarms Irwin, then transfers Zephyx into him so the punishment does not become an execution. His choice protects Solace's relationship with Dark Dream while ending Irwin's career at Solace. (Chapters 400–409)

Carl's later life is not narrated. Nick remembers him thousands of years afterward among the many associates who have died, leaving his handling of the expedition crisis as the last established personal consequence rather than evidence about any later promotion or reconciliation with Irwin. (Chapter 956)

Appearance and personality

Carl is a small blond man who wears Solace's uniform and carries no visible weapon when introduced. He is cautious, practical, and unusually reluctant to kill: nightmares about the few people he has killed prevent him from sleeping and slow his advancement. His response to Irwin shows that this restraint is not passivity; he can act decisively against a decade-long friend while still preserving that friend's life. (Chapters 400, 407–409)

Abilities and Zephyx

Carl is an Initial Expert with the speed, flight, Barrier, and Zephyx control of that rank. He can form earthen shields from his arms, merge with or move through earth and dunes, and alter the shields with electrified spikes and released gas. These defenses let him intercept Irwin's rifle shot and overpower a Peak Veteran at close range, but the text does not explain the origin of the earth ability or the exact effects of the gas. (Chapters 402, 405, and 409)

Relationships

  • Irwin: Carl is Irwin's friend of roughly ten years and repeatedly tries to contain his grief. He ultimately values Nick's life and Solace's obligations over personal loyalty, though he still saves Irwin from dying after subduing him. (Chapters 407–409)
  • Nick: Carl treats Nick as a business partner on the expedition, shares Solace's discovery, and accepts Nick's emergency warning despite uncertainty. He later prevents Irwin from assassinating him. (Chapters 400–409)

Items

  • Carl has a personal Barrier and Solace uniform, but no named weapon or signature artifact is established; his earthen shields are created through an ability rather than carried equipment. (Chapters 400 and 409)
