Xu Bai
Xu Bai is the Greatfather who rebuilds the Black Dragon Tribe during the Western Desert apocalypse and forms an equal alliance with Meng Hao.
Biography
Demon Spirit rivalry
Xu Bai enters the Realm of the Bridge Ruins as a renowned late Nascent Soul cultivator expected to reach Spirit Severing. He focuses most of his cultivation in his physical body and can hold a Demon Spirit butterfly in place, but Chen Mo’s interference lets Zhixiang seize it. Meng Hao’s Agarwood attack then throws both rivals hundreds of kilometers and leaves Xu Bai coughing blood. Xu Bai pursues briefly, but Zhixiang’s flower curse stops the contest. (Chapters 466–467)
Rebuilding the Black Dragon Tribe
After the tribe’s Spirit Severing patriarch dies during the apocalypse, Xu Bai becomes Greatfather. He leads survivors through brutal conquest, using victory to restore their faith and preserve a community that would otherwise disintegrate. At South Cleaving Pass he recognizes that the Crow Divinity Tribe is a natural ally rather than another target, because neither can safely cross the bandit-controlled route alone. (Chapters 507–508)
Xu Bai turns joint slaughter into a competition designed to determine whether either tribe should lead. When Meng Hao’s forces prove faster, the Black Dragon cultivators remove restraints on their physical cultivation to force a draw. Xu Bai nevertheless sees the Crow Divinity’s deeper strength and proposes an alliance with no primary or secondary party, sealed through blood oaths by people, Sacred Ancients, and neo-demons. (Chapters 508–509)
Blackgate and integration
At Blackgate Fort, Xu Bai entrusts his tribe to Meng Hao if he dies and opens every physical seal for the last battle. He charges at the front, accepting death as preferable to the extinction waiting behind them. After victory, he enters the Black Lands with a Demon Spirit and renews the alliance before temporarily separating to reorganize his people. (Chapters 510–515)
The Black Dragon and Golden Crow communities eventually combine, but old loyalties create friction after Meng Hao disappears into cultivation. Xu Bai suppresses the disputes and keeps the alliance intact, extending his role from battlefield Greatfather to long-term political stabilizer. (Chapter 520)
Appearance and personality
Xu Bai is a burly man whose enlarged frame displays the results of physical cultivation. He laughs heartily, fights at the front, and speaks to Meng Hao as a respected rival rather than a subordinate. Competitive pride matters to him, but survival of the tribe matters more; once Meng Hao’s strength is clear, he accepts equality and cooperation without resentment.
Abilities and cultivation
Late Nascent Soul physical cultivation
Xu Bai concentrates unusual amounts of cultivation power into his body and is considered the Black Dragon member most likely to reach Spirit Severing. He can physically restrain a Demon Spirit and becomes larger and more powerful when his restraints are removed. His durability is substantial but not limitless: Meng Hao’s Agarwood force sends him hundreds of kilometers and inflicts repeated internal injury. (Chapters 466–467 and 510)
Black Dragon physical seals
Black cords worn at the wrists restrain the tribe’s true physical power. Removing them increases cultivation bases by roughly fifty percent and makes bodies grow a full head taller, producing a fierce black-dragon-like charge. The method is shared tribal training rather than Xu Bai’s private invention. Keeping it sealed preserves a reserve; opening it is used when speed or survival outweighs concealment and strain. (Chapters 509–510)
Tribal command and faith
Xu Bai’s leadership coordinates mass attacks, conquest, oaths, and migration. Victories under him renew the Black Dragon Tribe’s faith after its patriarch’s death, while his later intervention suppresses factional conflict in the merged clan. His command is strengthened by personal participation: he asks no one to enter battles he avoids himself. (Chapters 507–520)
