Shui Mu

Shui Mu is the Crow Scout Tribe's rank 3 Dragoneer, a proud Kennelist overseer whose reputation collapses when Meng Hao reveals a level of neo-demon mastery far beyond his own.

Biography

Established Kennelist authority

Shui Mu is already famous among the vassal courtyards when Wu Ling seeks a neo-demon for her younger brother. As the overseer of the Tribe's Neo-Demon Kennelists, he carries enough prestige that even descendants of the three great bloodlines avoid offending him. He had earlier given Meng Hao basic instructions about raising neo-demons and regarded the unknown newcomer as insignificant, despite noticing that Meng Hao's Greenwood Wolves looked unusual. (Chapters 397 and 399–400)

Wu Ling pays a high price for Shui Mu's help in Wu Chen's inheritance duel. Shui Mu accepts because victory before the bloodline descendants could increase his reputation and bring further benefits. He presents a Greenwood Snake raised for a full year and displays the horn mutation produced by his special technique, using the audience's interest to enhance his authority before the match begins. Defeat and forced humility

The duel exposes the gap between performance and actual mastery. Shui Mu's snake loses, while Meng Hao's Greenwood Wolves reveal mutation after mutation. Each revelation makes Shui Mu more desperate to preserve face; he pretends that he predicted the outcome and adopts a mysterious air even while envy and humiliation overwhelm him. Meng Hao repeatedly asks whether he predicted the newest development, turning Shui Mu's own pose against him until the old man faints. (Chapter 402)

When Shui Mu recovers, he sees Meng Hao leave with dozens of neo-demons and finally accepts that their skill cannot be compared. Jealousy and rancor disappear because the difference is too vast to rationalize away. What remains is awe and fear, ending his brief role as a rival authority over Meng Hao. (Chapter 405)

Appearance and personality

Shui Mu is an old man with a haughty expression. He is status-conscious, eager for public credit, and skilled at projecting profundity even while emotionally shaken. His boastfulness is not complete fraud: he truly is a rank 3 Dragoneer and produces a mutated snake. His flaw is the need to protect that reputation when confronted with superior evidence. Once denial becomes impossible, he is capable of recognizing the difference and abandoning open resentment.

Abilities and cultivation

Shui Mu specializes in raising and directing neo-demons rather than personal combat.

Rank 3 Dragoneer practice

His rank grants authority among the Kennelist vassals and the ability to supply trained level 2 or level 3 neo-demons. The Tribe treats this expertise as valuable enough that Wu Ling negotiates carefully and pays heavily for assistance. Rank does not guarantee superiority over an unrecognized practitioner, which is the central limitation exposed by Meng Hao. (Chapters 397 and 399–401)

Induced Greenwood Snake mutation

Shui Mu spends a year raising a Greenwood Snake and applies a special technique that produces a horn from its forehead. He can activate or reveal the mutation with a gesture and direct the snake to attack in a neo-demon duel. The corpus does not explain the biological mechanism or any further stages, and the result is decisively inferior to Meng Hao's mutated beasts. (Chapter 401)

Kennelist supervision

As overseer, Shui Mu organizes the vassal Kennelists and provides initial husbandry instructions. This reflects practical experience and institutional authority, but his early dismissal of the Greenwood Wolves shows a diagnostic limitation: he notices that they are extraordinary without understanding the scale or source of their development.
