Shui Dongliu

Shui Dongliu is a mysterious painter whose residual existence repeatedly intervenes in Meng Hao's fate.

Biography

Southern Domain and the Black Sieve Sect

His signature appears on the treetop opportunity. He later paints Meng Hao, explains that World Tree will sustains his residual self, seals the Resurrection Lily, and merges part of its natural talent into Meng Hao. (Chapter 197), (Chapters 207–208)

He senses Meng Hao and the Celestial Larva and quietly helps with a splash of ink. (Chapter 383)

At the Rebirth Cave crisis he helps restore Meng Hao through the Bridge of Life, preserves Da Nu, expels Choumen Tai, and guides Meng Hao through the Dao Fruit and Soul Divergence Incantation into the Eternal stratum and Second Severing. (Chapters 692–693)

The Wider Ninth Mountain and Sea

Shui Dongliu is present during the struggle over the reopened Immortal Ancient Daoist Rite Temple, from the battles around its projections and final vision through the widening fight and evacuation of the off-world cultivators. (Chapters 818–819), (Chapter 826), (Chapter 830)

From the Eastern Lands, he independently recognizes the opening of the true-Immortal age. He later watches Meng Hao assault the Door of Immortality, smiles at the younger cultivator's rise, and declares that Meng Hao's era has arrived. (Chapter 957), (Chapter 972)

Nine Seas and the Windswept Realm

Shui Dongliu meets Meng Hao at Rebirth Cave and warns that a catastrophe from outside is approaching Planet South Heaven. During Fang Xiufeng's later crisis he secretly visits the unconscious Meng Hao, and he continues to observe events surrounding the South Heaven Death Formation. Meng Clan and the Mountain and Sea War

As the Heavens invade, Shui Dongliu stops acting only through hints and isolated interventions. He has accumulated Planet South Heaven's power and coordinated hidden reserves for a catastrophe he expected long before the Realm understood it. When an Eight-Essences Outsider Paragon seeks him out, Shui Dongliu removes the battle from South Heaven and returns after wounding the opponent, demonstrating that the quiet painter has been concealing power on the level of the war's strongest combatants. (Chapters 1319, 1323, 1335, 1338, 1344, 1347, 1349, 1360, 1367 and 1378–1381)

He orders the Realm's cultivators to retreat to the Ninth Mountain and takes command because the people and senior powers trust the preparations he has kept secret. Yet his returned body is already aging, and blocking Dao Fang's weapon churns both qi and soul. He can oppose an Eight-Essences Paragon and later reveal Nine-Essences power, but the residual existence carrying that power is neither inexhaustible nor physically secure. (Chapters 1383–1388)

When Meng Hao confronts him, Shui Dongliu admits that many apparent accidents in the young cultivator's life were parts of one plan. He arranged the Seventh Year Tribulation, placed the older Meng and Fang generations within the Heaven Severing Scripture and South Heaven's structure, directed Meng Hao's parents into their long guardianship, and cultivated the Demon Sealer path because he needed Meng Hao to become the new will of a surviving Mountain and Sea Realm. He also acknowledges the debt this imposed on the Fang bloodline and explains that the parents and grandfathers are transformed within the plan rather than simply discarded. (Chapters 1390–1396)

The plan expected the Grand Aegis to hold long enough to open an escape tunnel, but the Ninth Sea's betrayal leaves the defense incomplete. Shui Dongliu converts the remnants into the Mountain and Sea Seal, accepts the self-detonations of other ancient defenders as propulsion, and compresses the Realm and its population into a seed-like Butterfly. This is emergency adaptation rather than flawless foreknowledge: his preparations preserve a route, but they cannot prevent the destruction of the old world or the expenditure of most of its guardians. Finally, Shui Dongliu transfers the Realm, the Beginning-Ending First Hex, his cultivation, Dao understanding, and life Essence to Meng Hao. The reversed Immortal Dao Transference uses Shui Dongliu himself as the seed instead of consuming another cultivator, leaving him unable to move while the connection is active and burning away the existence he has preserved for this moment. He remains at the tunnel to block the Immortal God forces after the Butterfly escapes. The sacrifice resolves his indirect interventions: he has kept Meng Hao alive so a successor and a surviving population can continue after his own residual existence is spent. (Chapters 1397–1398)

Beyond Allheaven

Shui Dongliu later returns within the reconstructed Mountain and Sea Realm and survives for thousands of years under Allheaven's curse. Before dying again, he gives Meng Hao a jade slip containing deductions for lifting that curse and insists that the contents be memorized and destroyed. Meng Hao preserves his soul seed with the others; the final rescue therefore depends not on another combat technique but on the foresight Shui Dongliu leaves behind. (Chapters 1543–1546 and 1591)

When the method succeeds, Shui Dongliu reincarnates as a young cultivator who takes his old name and recovers his memories. He waits for Meng Hao, accepts the latter's bow of thanks, and chooses to remain behind to watch over the starry sky when Meng Hao and Xu Qing depart into the Universe. Reincarnation restores continuity of memory and purpose, but follows a new birth rather than reversing the cost of his earlier self-detonation. (Chapters 1610–1612)

Appearance and personality

Shui Dongliu often appears as a white-haired old painter, quiet enough to be mistaken for an eccentric wanderer. He is patient, secretive, and willing to let Meng Hao face growth-producing danger, yet intervenes where failure would end the larger plan.

Abilities and cultivation

Living painting

Ink and painted images can observe, mark, assist, or affect living targets. A splash of ink helps the Celestial Larva, while his portrait of Meng Hao becomes part of a longer causal preparation. The art operates through his residual will rather than ordinary decorative painting. (Chapters 197, 207–208 and 383)

World Tree residual existence

World Tree will sustains Shui Dongliu after an earlier death or dissolution. This permits centuries of preparation, but the vessel remains finite and is consumed in the final self-detonation. His later return occurs through a preserved soul seed and the restored cycle of reincarnation, not because the World Tree manifestation survives that expenditure intact. (Chapters 197–208, 1398, 1591 and 1610–1612)

Resurrection Lily seal

He restrains the parasite and merges part of its natural talent into Meng Hao without allowing immediate possession. The seal can be attacked when Meng Hao weakens, so it is suppression and controlled integration rather than a cure. (Chapters 207–208, 417 and 439–440)

Cultivation guidance

At Rebirth Cave he coordinates the Bridge of Life, Dao Fruit, and Soul Divergence conditions that lead Meng Hao toward the Eternal stratum and Second Severing. Other pills, treasures, and Meng Hao's insight remain necessary. (Chapters 692–693)

Nine Seals inheritance

Shui Dongliu contains a stream of Nine Seals' discarnate soul and is repeatedly identified with that ancient inheritance, but he explicitly denies that the two identities are simply interchangeable. At the end he can reveal Nine-Essences power, direct the Grand Aegis, reform its remnants as the Mountain and Sea Seal, compress the Realm into a transferable seed, and pass on the Beginning-Ending First Hex. His reversed Immortal Dao Transference pours cultivation, Dao understanding, and life Essence into Meng Hao by making Shui Dongliu himself the sacrificial seed. The connection prevents him from moving while it operates and consumes the legacy instead of leaving a reusable technique or independent reserve behind. (Chapters 1378–1398)
