Spell Lance of the Magister

The Spell Lance of the Magister is a legendary growth staff that primes enemies for stronger magical attacks. It is paired with Magister’s Tithe, and Clive’s advancing command of the staff turns it from a ranged force weapon into the focus for a lethal combat ritual. (Chapters 164, 680)

History

Clive discovers the staff with its matching wand on the plinth of an adventurer statue in a crumbling Reaper-trial tower. The dark wood, engraved symbols, brass cap and purple gemstone conceal no trap he can detect, and identification reveals an ancient sorcerer’s weapon. For a ritualist whose own abilities already invoke the Magister, the matched growth set is the expedition’s defining reward. (Chapter 164)

By silver rank the staff also enables Magister’s Ballista. Trapped alone with a messenger after Onslow’s vessel is destroyed and the wand falls out of reach, Clive uses close-combat movements to draw a ritual diagram in gold trails. Once the hidden pattern is complete, the staff launches a force spear that repeatedly reverses direction and strikes until the messenger is dead. (Chapter 680)

Properties and use

The staff’s explosive disruptive-force bolt and sustained beam inflict stacking Spell Impetus. Each stack lowers all of the target’s resistances; when Clive lands an offensive spell while wielding the staff, the stacks are consumed to magnify that spell. He can also spend additional mana to increase a spell’s effect, with a stronger result while the matching wand is equipped. (Chapters 164, 680)

At silver rank, melee strikes build Power of the War Magus, creating body-hugging barrier layers that can be consumed to strengthen a force bolt. The staff is also the indispensable focus for Magister’s Ballista, which cannot be performed without it. That ritual remains demanding despite the item: Clive must construct the diagram, survive long enough to finish it and supply the necessary magic before the spear can be released. (Chapter 680)
