Reaper Token

The Reaper Token is a square obsidian tablet marked with a silver scythe. Jason receives it from a hidden Reaper trial, and its use in an awakening ritual both calls Shade as his familiar and evolves one of Jason’s racial gifts. (Chapters 173, 176)

History

Jason claims the token after completing the hidden trial associated with the Reaper’s scythe. Its transcendent, legendary classification and obscured effects identify it as an astral-blessing token rather than ordinary loot. Clive explains that great astral beings can use such tokens to signal approval and arrange a beneficial power interaction, provided the recipient consents through the appropriate ritual. (Chapters 173, 176)

Jason combines the tablet with an awakening stone of the Reaper. During the ritual the token melds into his body and is consumed, awakening Shadow of the Reaper from his dark essence. Shade manifests as the familiar attached to that power, while Mysterious Stranger evolves into Dark Rider, allowing Jason’s shadow familiars to assume mount forms. The ritual and awakening stone together constitute Jason’s consent to the Reaper’s intervention. (Chapters 176, 260)

Properties and use

The token does not provide a free-standing combat effect. It modifies a compatible awakening ritual, steering the result toward a Reaper-associated familiar power and racial evolution. Its benefits therefore depend on Jason’s existing essence configuration, a suitable awakening stone, a properly conducted ritual and his willingness to accept the arrangement. (Chapters 176, 260)

The tablet is strictly consumable. Once it has merged into Jason, its legacy persists through Shade and Dark Rider rather than through a physical item. The Reaper’s blessing is presented as harmless, but the token is also an unmistakable point of contact with a great astral being, making informed consent an important part of its use. (Chapters 176, 260)
