The Immortal Crest is an iron-rank consumable that allows a qualified mystical tattooist to draw a visible crest from an essence user’s soul. Jason receives one after the fifth Reaper trial and uses it to establish a permanent, verifiable magical identity. (Chapters 171, 183, 186)

History

Jason earns the crest after demonstrating resolve in the last of the formal trials. Its description makes the restrictions immediate: it must be applied by a mystical tattooist and can only be used on an iron-rank essence user. Because Greenstone has no craftsperson with the necessary speciality, Jason waits until the team reaches a larger trade centre and locates a tattooist able to perform the procedure. (Chapters 171, 183)

Before the application, Clive Standish and Humphrey Geller explain the result. Humphrey already bears a soul crest from his travels with his mother. The tattooist then applies Jason’s crest through a magical tattooing process, consuming the item and revealing imagery that reflects his soul rather than a design chosen for decoration. (Chapters 183, 186)

Properties and use

The crest imprints the soul and only appears on the body as a consequence. Its visible design resists deliberate selection because it reflects the bearer’s nature. That visible form and the bearer’s aura may change, but the unique aura imprint remains constant. Once recorded, the imprint provides proof of identity that cannot be tracked remotely or falsified through even extremely powerful magic. (Chapter 183)

The item’s narrow window of use is its principal limit: an iron-rank bearer, a specialist craftsperson and the expensive, difficult-to-make consumable are all required. The object does not survive application. Its enduring product is the soul crest, which can be checked against an Adventure Society record at branches across the world without functioning as a tracking beacon. (Chapters 171, 183, 186)
