Rick reacts to an unexpected mirage-arena defeat by immediately asking for a rematch, not from wounded pride but because the Geller culture teaches him to study failure. Later losses test that principle more severely. Rather than reduce leadership to vengeance, he concentrates on keeping his surviving team together, and his emotional reunion with Hannah during the underground crisis shows that protection has become more important to him than proving individual strength.
