Marla
Marla is Lorenn’s principal military commander among the surviving brighthearts.
Biography
Duty to the last refuge
Marla helps Lorenn confront the brighthearts’ apparent extinction as elemental messengers close on their final refuge. She proposes the surface route only to reject it once its true cost is clear: fighters might escape, but civilians would be abandoned. Marla chooses to die with her people if necessary and supports maintaining the hated alliance with Beaufort because preserving the whole community matters more than personal survival or ideological purity. (Chapters 750, 757–764)
During the alliance campaign, Marla commands the citadel, manages prisoners and access, and fights beside gold-rank adventurers, cultists, and messengers. Her pragmatism keeps the refuge functioning while Lorenn handles broader political authority. The eventual evacuation and survival of the brighthearts turn her refusal to abandon non-combatants into the decision that preserves a people rather than merely a military remnant. (Chapters 766–821, 881)
Skills and abilities
Marla is a gold-rank brightheart commander with elemental combat power, strong aura authority, and experience coordinating defensive forces. She can fight high-rank threats directly, but neither she nor Lorenn has the strength to defeat the messenger armies without outside alliances, making logistics and discipline essential limits. (Chapters 750–781)
