Biography

An honest alliance with an enemy

Beaufort’s forces escape an astral space only to become trapped in an underground war against elemental messengers. Recognising that the cult and brighthearts will both die separately, he forms an alliance and later places his hope in the arrival of Jason Asano, the enemy his faith names the Defier. He restrains cultists who would attack Jason and accepts that cooperation may end in imprisonment or death because either is preferable to meaningless annihilation. (Chapters 750–757)

His knowledge of the underground realm and iron control over his followers make the alliance viable through the transformation-zone campaign. Beaufort repeatedly argues for cult interests and never renounces the Builder, but he follows collective decisions when division would be fatal. That discipline lets former enemies cross death zones, claim territory, fight Undeath, and evacuate together without pretending their moral conflict has disappeared. (Chapters 762–784, 800, 821–831)

Skills and abilities

Beaufort surrendered his original essence powers for Builder modifications. In battle, his handsome elven exterior separates to reveal a large metal framework of blades, with bladed wings for flight and enough cutting force to bore through masses of enemies. The form is powerful and durable but visibly artificial, and his command remains dependent on keeping fanatical subordinates under control. (Chapters 750, 756, 781, 831)

  • Lorenn: Beaufort and Lorenn maintain an alliance grounded in mutual survival, candour, and continuing distrust. (Chapters 750, 756–765)
  • Jason Asano: Beaufort sees Jason as his god’s greatest local enemy and the only available path to survival, making their cooperation pragmatic rather than reconciliatory. (Chapters 750–784, 800)
  • Marla: Marla helps govern the brightheart side of the alliance and challenges Beaufort without undermining the shared defence. (Chapters 750, 781)
