Kaito Asano

Kaito Asano is Jason Asano’s elder brother, a helicopter operator whose old betrayal helps drive Jason away from his family and former life and whose later attempts at reconciliation unfold during Earth’s magical crisis. After receiving a flight-specialised essence combination, Kaito becomes a crucial transport and evacuation pilot. Jack Gerling kills him while pursuing Jason, turning a damaged brotherhood into a loss neither man can repair.

Biography

Reaper trials and the Builder crisis

Kaito is absent from Pallimustus, but Jason carries their rupture into the Reaper trials. A fear-created version of Jason identifies Kaito as the elder brother who married the woman Jason once loved, using that betrayal as proof that power should be used to punish disappointment. Jason rejects the projection’s demand for revenge, insisting that the relationship belonged to his adolescence and refusing to let unresolved family pain become an excuse for domination. Kaito therefore shapes the trial not through action but through the wound Jason is being tested on. (Chapter 170)

The history behind that fear is that Kaito began a relationship with Amy in circumstances Jason experienced as his brother’s betrayal and later married her. Kaito admits that he never managed to make amends before Jason disappeared and was believed dead. When Jason returns, Kaito’s guilt makes him see his brother everywhere before he knows the sightings are real. He wants reconciliation, but Jason’s anger is not performative: the betrayal helped destroy his trust in family, and Kaito cannot make forgiveness happen merely by regretting what he did. Earth’s hidden magical war

Once magic is revealed to the family, Kaito accepts a non-combat essence set aligned with skills he already has. Vehicle, wind and swift essences produce the soaring confluence, allowing him to conjure a futuristic helicopter. The vehicle initially consumes almost all his iron-rank mana, but its speed, sensors, drones and later weapons make him useful to the Network. Rather than stay at the family compound during the crisis, he moves personnel and supplies because civilians beyond his own relatives also need help, converting his familiar profession into magical public service. The Network force-feeds Kaito monster cores until he reaches bronze rank, prioritising the transport speed needed during the Makassar disaster. He flies high-rank fighters into the city and joins evacuation work, then continues carrying Jason’s party between dimensional sites. When a gold-rank pursuer approaches, Kaito immediately launches the group to safety and uses every available speed boost, weapon and drone. The disparity is absolute: Gerling overtakes the bronze-rank helicopter, ignores its defences and destroys it, killing Kaito, Asya and Greg despite the emergency measures that preserve several other passengers. Kaito’s final action is an attempt to carry them all away rather than abandon them. (Chapters 361, 380, 426)

Kaito’s death permanently closes the possibility of an ordinary repaired relationship with Jason, but his soul receives one last, strictly temporary visit. Dawn arranges for Kaito, Asya and Greg to project through Shade’s bodies for nine hours so their families can say goodbye. Kaito uses the time to tell Jason that protecting him was never Jason’s duty and to ask that the brother who saves the world remain recognisably himself. The projection ends without resurrection, leaving Kaito dead while his final request continues to shape Jason’s choices. (Chapters 384, 388–390, 426–447)

Appearance and personality

Kaito is taller than Jason and notably handsome, to the point that Jason’s magical rank-ups make the brothers look increasingly alike. He is socially conventional where Jason is deliberately provocative, with an easier manner that helps him fit into family and community life. That difference is not simple moral superiority: Amy identifies Kaito’s need for acceptance and insecurity about Jason as motives behind the betrayal, while Kaito himself recognises that remorse does not erase the harm. (Chapters 170, 282, 329)

He is a devoted husband and father in his later life, practical about aircraft and initially bewildered by Jason’s magical world. Once he understands the emergency, however, he does not retreat into domestic safety. He takes on exhausting logistics and evacuation work, places public need ahead of requests from powerful families and responds decisively when the group must flee Gerling. His development is modest but meaningful: the man who once hurt his brother out of insecurity later uses his specialised power to carry responsibility for others. (Chapters 282, 314, 341, 361, 380)

Magic and abilities

Soaring confluence

Kaito’s vehicle, wind and swift essences combine into the soaring confluence, a known non-combat combination focused on flight. Its central ability conjures an advanced helicopter resembling a futuristic Bell concept aircraft. The specialisation lets him produce an unusually impressive vehicle even at iron rank, but power-set balance concentrates most of his strength in that one conjuration: his remaining abilities chiefly enhance its speed, weapons and operation rather than making him a rounded personal combatant. Piloting, sensors and support systems

The helicopter carries sensors, deployable drones, communications and weapon systems best managed by a pilot and co-pilot. Kaito’s professional familiarity with helicopters lets him use the vehicle as a mobile support platform, and his crew manages surveillance while he flies. The conjuration can detect aura surges, warn of approaching aircraft and travel faster than mundane helicopters, making it highly effective for reconnaissance, rapid deployment, supply movement and evacuation. (Chapters 339, 342, 361, 380)

Costs and combat limits

At iron rank, summoning the helicopter consumes almost Kaito’s entire mana pool, and both pilot and vehicle require spirit coins during extended operations. Monster-core advancement raises him quickly to bronze and improves speed, but it substitutes raw rank for trained combat mastery. His weapons and drones are useful against comparable threats, not gold-rank opponents: Gerling crosses the distance despite every enhancement, treats the intercepting systems as negligible and destroys the conjured aircraft in one strike. • Jason Asano: Kaito’s betrayal with Amy helps drive Jason away and becomes one of the fears Jason confronts in the Reaper trial. Kaito wants to make amends after Jason returns, but his death ensures their partial reconciliation can never become a clean resolution. (Chapters 170, 282–285, 329, 380)
• Amy: Amy becomes Kaito’s wife after their relationship begins through a betrayal of Jason. Their marriage later appears affectionate and stable, but both understand that its origin inflicted lasting harm that family normality cannot retroactively excuse. (Chapters 282, 314, 329)
