Carlos Quilido

Carlos Quilido is a gold-rank priest of the Healer whose speciality is the relationship between physical bodies and spiritual structures. Called to Greenstone after Jason survives a star seed, he becomes a trusted consultant on possession, conversion and beings whose bodies cannot be treated separately from their souls. His work eventually joins Pallimustus healing with Earth medicine and produces a harsh but viable cure for lesser vampirism. (Chapters 211, 649, 744, 982–984)

Biography

Yaresh and the messenger war

Carlos enters the Yaresh crisis as both field healer and specialist consultant. He persuades officials of the Church of the Healer to use Jason's cloud palace for refugees, vouching for a man many clergy distrust because the facility's protections and amenities serve people in immediate need. His earlier insistence that former zealots be understood as victims also shifts custody toward treatment: saving them requires recognising spiritual coercion without pretending it removes every danger they pose. (Chapters 586, 649)

As world-taker worms and elemental messengers create unfamiliar bodies, Carlos supplies the medical interpretation other adventurers lack. He explains that conversions often increase rank while leaving subjects weak for that rank, distinguishes the worms' incubation stages and joins the deep expedition as its closest expert on elemental messenger physiology. His decisions turn investigation into triage: knowledge matters because it determines whom the group can restore, what it must contain and which apparently living bodies are already undergoing irreversible transformation. That work expands a speciality first applied to Jason's star-seed trauma. Carlos remains calm when Jason threatens him over examining Colin, accepts the boundary and makes patient welfare explicit before research value. By the later inter-world period, the same ethic guides a much larger programme combining magical matrices, DNA and Earth clinical practice. He develops procedures that can excise lesser vampirism without automatically killing the host, moving from rare consultant to an authority whose research changes the possible fate of thousands. Appearance and personality

Carlos is broad-shouldered and swarthy, with the polished appearance of a gold-rank essence user. When first treating Jason he wears plain brown clothing rather than ornate priestly vestments, giving him the practical air of a physician. In his Earth research centre, a lab coat and an instinctive tendency to place himself between a patient and a disruptive crowd make that medical identity even more explicit. (Chapters 211, 966)

He is calm, curious and professionally direct. Jason's threats do not provoke him into a dominance contest; Carlos simply accepts the patient's boundary and continues explaining what care requires. His open manner can become dryly severe when officials confuse status with expertise. He values knowledge intensely, but repeatedly places healing before extraction of useful data, which distinguishes his research from the coercive experiments he studies. (Chapters 211, 966, 982)

Magic and abilities

Physical-spiritual medicine

Carlos rejects the simplified title of “soul healer.” His field is the physical-spiritual dichotomy of living beings: how a body's material systems and underlying magical matrix affect one another. This lets him examine star-seed damage, conversion, messenger physiology and vampirism as linked bodily and spiritual conditions. The approach is diagnostic as much as curative, and it requires detailed study because changing the soul can kill a body that cannot survive the corresponding physical reversion. For lesser vampirism, Carlos develops a regulated procedure that reinforces the body's magical matrix before excising the malign spiritual condition. The reinforcement allows the body to survive the return toward its human state, including reversal of altered life-force mechanics. It is not a universal purification spell: each affliction needs a tailored method, greater vampires are too spiritually committed to restore, and even eligible lesser vampires face a harsh process with less than a hundred-percent survival. Healing, examination and targeted interventions

As a gold-rank priest of the Healer, Carlos can conduct high-level examinations and treatment of patients whose conditions defeat ordinary practice. His experience includes people who have had star seeds extracted, victims hosting world-taker worms and bodies altered by elemental or undead magic. He collaborates with ritualists such as Farrah when precision is critical and with mental-health specialists such as Arabelle when bodily restoration leaves trauma or compulsions that direct healing cannot remove. Carlos's medical knowledge can also inform targeted weapons against magical biology. He studies blood magic, samples and meridian systems to identify how an enemy's power operates, but colleagues explicitly challenge whether such work suits a priest of the Healer. The tension is a real limit on application: understanding a body can enable harm as readily as care, so institutional ethics and collaboration must govern which insights become treatments, restraints or weapons. Research method and limits

Carlos builds knowledge through rare cases rather than assuming one success generalises. Jason's survival provides evidence about resisting a star seed; Melody's extraordinary procedure reveals why earlier attempts were lethal; Earth medicine exposes links between DNA and matter's magical matrix. His strength is synthesis across worlds, while his limitation is that unprecedented conditions demand years of observation, controlled iteration and help from specialists whose expertise he does not share. He cannot erase every consequence of spiritual injury. Star-seed survivors retain permanent changes and may develop trauma or compulsions after the immediate crisis; magical durability can delay symptoms rather than prevent them. Likewise, his vampire cure restores a viable body but leaves psychological rehabilitation to long-term teams. Carlos's practice is powerful because it defines a survivable next step, not because it promises that survival completes recovery. (Chapters 211, 982–984)

By Chapter 987, Carlos is alive and directing inter-world medical research on Earth. His cure has restored thousands of lesser vampires to humanity, while his research centre continues work on magical matrices, blood magic and unprecedented soul-body conditions.
