Anna Tilden

Annabeth “Anna” Tilden is a magical administrator and diplomat who becomes one of Jason Asano’s most important institutional allies. She first tries to make the Australian Network live up to its protective purpose from within its hierarchy, then moves through the United Nations before accepting the harder role of representing Jason: restraining his most dangerous impulses without pretending that Earth’s old powers can command him.

Biography

Earth’s hidden magical war

Anna enters the story running operations for the Network’s Sydney branch, caught between supernatural emergencies, the secrecy surrounding magic, and leaders who regard Jason chiefly as a resource to control. She argues that cooperation will protect the public better than coercion, uses political and media pressure to contain the consequences of magical incidents, and makes Jason’s help contingent on concrete institutional concessions rather than empty trust. Her bargain helps secure access to his knowledge and training, while the deaths and betrayals inside her own branch push her onto its Steering Committee and give her greater responsibility for the reforms she has been demanding. That authority does not solve the conflict between Anna’s ideals and the Network’s appetite for power. When the organisation publicly severs ties with Jason, she confronts him in person and insists that the Network can still become what it ought to be; he, in turn, forces her to examine whether loyalty to its hierarchy is compatible with protecting the world. Anna initially chooses reform from within, but the accelerating crisis and institutional fracture eventually change her judgment. By the time Jason prepares to leave Earth, she acknowledges that the unified Network she was trying to save no longer exists and becomes the United Nations liaison to the Asano Clan, carrying her public-service purpose into a more open magical order. Years later, Anna is a silver-rank UN Under-Secretary-General when Rufus Remore asks her to guide Jason’s return. She does not accept on faith: with her wife Susan, she tests whether his extraordinary claims and intentions hold together, then concludes that both an honest demigod and a deceptive one require a capable counterweight. After joining him, Anna becomes more willing to use his strategic boldness, arriving without permission when delay would trap her in political games, while remaining the person who challenges his detachment, translates his threats into diplomacy, and seeks workable consequences for Earth’s governments. Her work on the taskforce, reality-core conspiracy, and Asano sovereignty makes her not merely Jason’s spokesperson but an independent negotiator able to tell both him and established powers when their preferred answer is unacceptable. Personality and approach

Anna is pragmatic, skeptical, dryly funny, and deeply conscious of institutional consequences. She will exploit an ugly news narrative or arrive without warning when delay would surrender negotiating leverage, but she does not confuse expediency with virtue. Her recurring frustration is that organisations founded to shield people from magic instead pursue secrecy, leverage, and personal power. That frustration makes her ambitious for reform, while her willingness to admit the Network’s failures lets her change allegiance without abandoning the public she means to serve. Her work repeatedly costs her sleep, safety, and emotional equilibrium. Susan provides a private life in which Anna can lower her guard and, more importantly, challenges her to decide what responsibility requires instead of simply reacting to the scale of Jason’s power. Anna later offers the same grounded perspective to other officials overwhelmed by magical events, treating collapse as an injury that can be acknowledged and helped rather than concealed as professional weakness. Anna is a newly advanced iron-rank essence user during Jason’s first return to Earth. At that stage her aura and physical senses are only slightly enhanced, her abilities are not fully awakened, and her body already purges ordinary stimulants quickly enough to make caffeine ineffective. She later reaches silver rank, gaining the resilience and perception associated with that rank, but she remains an administrator rather than a combat specialist. As operations director, Anna coordinates grid monitoring, magical incident response, investigations, intelligence analysis, and teams drawn from competing parts of the Network. She is quick to test information for strategic value: Jason’s spirit coins reveal economic leverage, his knowledge of essences becomes a bargaining instrument, and hidden magical activity prompts her to assemble specialists rather than settle for the first convenient explanation. These skills remain important after magic becomes public, when the same threats must be managed amid governments, intelligence services, public scrutiny, and rival magical factions. Anna’s principal strength is translating personal magical power into arrangements that institutions can survive. She reads the interests behind formal positions, controls what information enters negotiations, and knows when process protects people or merely gives rivals time to interfere. Working for Jason forces her to operate without conventional authority: she cannot order him or promise that states will behave rationally, so she establishes terms, models likely reactions, seeks reciprocal concessions, and confronts both sides with the costs of breaking an agreement. Her influence is substantial but not absolute; Jason can reject her advice, and governments can replace cooperative negotiators, leaving every settlement dependent on continuing judgment rather than command.
