Kane Williams

Kane Williams is the Sword Saint who develops Divine Swordsmanship and becomes Neo Hargraves's first sword mentor. Beginning as an unawakened survivor who considers himself a coward, Kane becomes a Great Disaster in Tartarus, a Seraph, and a peak Stage 6 ally of the Forgotten Suns. His Demon and sword legacy continue after he is slain.

Biography

A frightened survivor who chooses to fight

Neo finds Kane badly wounded in the apocalyptic Memory Shadow World after statue creatures destroy his group and Kane's brother sacrifices himself during their escape. Kane is a normal human with little hope of resisting even minor monsters, but he supplies information and guides Neo toward Arzew after Neo treats his wounds. At registration he gives the temporary name Kane Millens; the Hanged King's play later calls him Kane Carter, both unstable identities produced inside the Shadow World's reconstructed past rather than separate people. (Chapters 206–207 and 210)

Anomaly #33 turns Arzew into a repeating civic tragedy and places Neo in the role of the mayor to be hanged. Kane repeatedly falls under its control, yet shocks let him recognize the play and eventually choose Neo over his own safety. When statue monsters close in, his desire to stop them from reaching Neo awakens his Trait: the world slows, sword paths appear, and Kane follows them despite catastrophic injuries. His first true victory therefore comes from acting while terrified, not from becoming fearless. (Chapters 210–212)

Divine Swordsmanship and the long dream

Kane grows with extraordinary speed after awakening. Within months, a training strike severs Neo's arm because Kane's apparent Trait techniques are stronger than either expected. Neo determines that the Trait itself lets Kane put Intent into pure Divine Energy and communicate through it, while the named sword attacks are Incantations Kane has unconsciously created. The discovery changes their relationship from rescued survivor and protector to fellow researchers and, increasingly, teacher and student. (Chapters 219–220)

Before confronting Anomaly #79, Kane transfers seven techniques to Neo and seals an eighth until Neo masters Flow and Time. He names the system Divine Swordsmanship after Neo's title, the Divine Ruler, because he wants the art to inherit Neo's ambition. Kane initially plans to accept an Eternal Dream, but Neo challenges him to fight for millennia and meet again in the future. Kane accepts; his teachings remain so deeply rooted that centuries later Neo still recalls Kane's standards in the middle of battle. (Chapters 241–242, 268, and 343)

The Great Disaster of Tartarus

By the time they reunite, Kane is the Sword Saint and First Executioner living inside Tartarus with Ava, a daughter created by the Nightmare after Erza's stillborn child died. Runes imposed by the Dragon Clans seal Kane's Trait, preventing him from speaking with Elementals or using his sword. He nevertheless tests the arriving Executioners through Ava, explains the Abyss and Grand Expedition, and helps Neo bloom the Everwitch flower as far as the seal allows. (Chapters 396 and 398–401)

Kane's accommodation with the prison is rooted in grief. After Erza died, he once rampaged through multiple layers and was defeated; Tartarus's time reset erased ordinary memory of that attack. The Dragon Clans fear him as the Third Great Disaster, while Tartarus keeps Ava close enough to discourage another revolt. Kane knows the created girl is not the child Erza bore, but her memories, habits, and affection are real to him, making the prison both his enemy and the place where his family appears to survive. (Chapters 419–420, 459, and 525)

Severing Tartarus and letting Ava go

Vlad finally breaks Kane's seal because he needs help against Neo, then says Ava has died in Layer 5 and expects Kane to defend the prison that can recreate her. Kane instead cuts Vlad, verifies through Neo's memories that Tartarus killed Ava, and chooses to end the system. He accepts that Ava was real to him without accepting Tartarus's right to kill, restore, and control her whenever useful. (Chapter 524)

With the Demon Severant, Kane cleaves Layers 3 and 4 from inside, divides the Nightmare's conceptual creatures, and holds the collapsing world away from Neo's duel. When Neo regresses, Kane visits Ava one final time, then permits Neo to return to the future even though that choice removes the version of her still alive in the past. Kane reassures Neo rather than blaming him, turning the liberation of Tartarus into an act of grief freely accepted instead of another attempt to escape reality. (Chapters 525 and 529–533)

Seraph, Forgotten Sun, and final death

The Eternals' pruning of Tartarus cannot fully remove Kane. His Demon carries unusual authority, and Kane has cut the version of himself stored in the Akashic Record so future predictions cannot recreate or track him. Neo later learns that Kane and Zeus killed Earth's gods, giving the mentor a morally darker history than Neo knew. Kane's resistance to recorded Fate grants freedom, but it does not make every choice made with that freedom just. (Chapters 538–539 and 711)

Kane eventually serves the Forgotten Suns as a youthful-looking adviser and Seraph. A figure called “I” supplies coordinates and times that let Kane and Zeus reincarnate across eras reliably, shape their paths, and reach peak Stage 6. During the universal war, Kane challenges the Suns' complacency but remains on their side. He is later slain, and Severant passes to Kevin. Erza is restored near the novel's end, but Kane is not explicitly listed among the returned. (Chapters 556, 738–739, 770, and 832)

Appearance and personality

Kane's appearance varies across lives. He first appears as an injured forty-three-year-old man in the Memory Shadow World. Later Seraph reincarnations include adolescent-looking bodies: one has short black hair and lazy silver eyes, while another is a white-haired, blue-eyed boy dressed in a way that makes his immense reputation seem almost comic. These are successive forms of one reincarnating person, not evidence that the older survivor and the Sword Saint are separate characters. (Chapters 206–207, 556, and 738–739)

He describes himself as cowardly and weak-willed, enjoys anime, and often jokes when tension becomes unbearable. Those traits coexist with extreme resolve. Kane attacks an execution stage while unawakened, spends millennia fighting rather than accept a final sleep, and holds off a sentient Nightmare World while it weaponizes the voices of his wife and daughter. His courage repeatedly takes the form of acknowledging fear and guilt, then choosing the responsibility he believes remains. (Chapters 210–212, 220, 242, and 525)

Kane is generous as a teacher but ethically complicated as a god. He gives Neo the enlightenments and identity of his swordsmanship because he admires Neo's refusal to surrender, and he later helps end Tartarus even at the cost of Ava. Yet he also joins Zeus in killing the gods and serves the Forgotten Suns in their war. The narrative preserves both legacies rather than reducing him to either the kindly mentor or the feared Great Disaster. (Chapters 241–242, 524–525, 539, 711, and 738–739)

Powers and limitations

Elemental communication Trait

Kane's Trait lets him hear Elementals and communicate his Intent through pure Divine Energy. This is the foundation of his Incantations, his awareness of pre-altered timelines when Time Elementals are available, and his ability to interpret forces that others cannot perceive. The Trait is not immune to suppression: Dragon Clan Runes seal both the communication and Kane's sword use until Vlad removes them, and early in Kane's life the ability activates unpredictably under lethal stress. (Chapters 212, 219–220, 387, 401, and 524)

Divine and Demon Swordsmanship

Divine Swordsmanship begins as seven techniques built from Kane's Intent and a sealed eighth technique based on Flow and Time. Flow predicts an opponent's actions, while Kane's mature sword practice expands into Demon techniques such as Crescent Rend, Realm Splitter, Emotion Severance, and Nightless Horizon. These attacks do more than cut matter: they divide space, sensation, emotional influence, and conceptual existence. Neo inherits the original system, but Kane remains its creator and continues developing beyond what he transferred in the Age of Gods. (Chapters 219–220, 241–242, 268, and 525)

Severant

Severant is a sentient Demon contracted to Kane, not the same thing as his innate Trait. Its defining ability divides existence and weakens whatever is split, including beings without conventional bodies or forms. Kane uses it against the Nightmare World and its conceptual creatures, while Severant's authority also helps place Kane beyond ordinary erasure. The partnership is not permanent ownership: after Kane is slain, Severant becomes Kevin's contracted weapon and is obliged to assist the new contractor. (Chapters 525, 538–539, and 770)

Record severance and Seraph reincarnation

Kane cuts his own representation out of the Akashic Record, making his future impossible for that system to predict and frustrating tracking abilities such as Wayfarer. As a Seraph, he can also reincarnate into the past or future outside ordinary Underworld judgment. The method normally has unreliable destinations and risks madness through too many fractured lives. “I” mitigates the first limitation by supplying exact death coordinates and times, enabling Kane to train across incarnations until peak Stage 6. (Chapters 398, 539, 711, and 739)

Limits

Kane's early body is human enough that using his newly awakened Trait leaves him broken and bleeding. Later, imposed Runes remove access to his defining powers, while grief over Erza and Ava gives Tartarus leverage even when Kane knows the prison is manipulating him. His resistance to Fate and erasure also does not equal invulnerability: despite reaching peak Stage 6, Kane is slain in the universal war, and his Demon continues without him. Neo Hargraves

Neo first saves Kane's life, but Kane's attempt to save Neo awakens the power that eventually makes him a legend. Their roles then reverse and overlap: Kane teaches the sword, while Neo supplies the challenge that keeps Kane from surrendering to an Eternal Dream. In Tartarus they fight as peers, and Kane trusts Neo with Ava's final loss. Neo continues to use Divine Swordsmanship and remember Kane as a friend even after learning about his darker alliance with Zeus. (Chapters 206, 210–212, 219–220, 241–242, 343, 524–525, and 711)

Ava and Erza

Erza is Kane's wife, killed while pregnant; their child is stillborn. Tartarus later creates Ava with the place of a daughter in Kane's life. Kane refuses to dismiss Ava as meaningless because her experiences and love are real to him, yet he ultimately accepts that preserving Tartarus would preserve her captivity rather than restore Erza's child. His farewell to Ava and refusal to blame Neo are among his clearest acts of emotional growth. Erza and both Avas are later restored, while Kane's own restoration is not shown. (Chapters 459, 524, 529–532, and 832)

Zeus and the Forgotten Suns

Kane and Zeus share Seraph reincarnation, pursue peak Stage 6 across eras, and cooperate in the killing of Earth's gods. Kane later advises the Forgotten Suns and speaks to Zeus with the confidence of a peer rather than a subordinate. This alliance places him on the opposing side of Neo's later war and complicates his role as mentor: the same man who rejects Tartarus's absolute judgment helps Zeus carry out mass killing for a prophecy-driven objective. Kane's defining weapon is Severant, a sentient Demon able to divide existence. Kane is its contractor and wielder, not its creator or permanent owner, and the weapon survives him to contract with Kevin. His Dragon Clan sealing Runes are imposed restraints rather than possessions: they suppress his Trait and sword until Vlad releases them. (Chapters 401, 524–525, and 770)
