Charlotte

Charlotte Fontaine is the principal of Demigod Academy and the master of Elizabeth. She becomes Neo Hargraves's institutional guardian and sponsor, balancing genuine protection with containment, political negotiation, and scrutiny of the secrets surrounding him. She is not a Hargraves relative, Neo's homeroom teacher, or the Academy's hidden founder.

Biography

Elizabeth's master and the Academy's principal

Charlotte intercepts Elizabeth when her estranged disciple secretly returns after faking her death. She is furious that Elizabeth vanished for decades and intends to resume hiding after seeing Amelia and Neo, but the anger conceals preparation: Charlotte has already arranged the identity Anna and a first-year teaching post. By solving both security and employment before Elizabeth asks, she gives her disciple a protected route back into family life without demanding that past neglect be repaired first. (Chapter 55)

Her attention then extends to Neo as a student and as someone Elizabeth cares about. Charlotte investigates the Mystica Fauna Preserve after realizing the dead phoenix and its owner's restrained complaint do not fit, and her dolls evacuate students when Elizabeth threatens to reenter a closing Window. When Neo emerges physically dead, Charlotte verifies that he is the original, stops the assembled Demigods from attacking, and negotiates the time healing he needs. Her bargaining is self-serving, but her decision that she cannot let him die is firm. (Chapters 71–72, 97, 119, and 123–124)

Protection through pressure and political leverage

Charlotte and Sphinx supervise Neo's Akashic visions and wait for his natural death to end the fourth one. Although the Akashic Record apparently intends him to remain dead, Charlotte insists on allowing his revival because the consequences include Elizabeth's retaliation and the loss of an Academy student. Afterward she absorbs appointment demands from Clans, Temples, countries, and media while publicly treating Neo's fame as an administrative headache rather than encouraging his sense of privilege. (Chapters 138–140)

That apparent indifference is deliberately incomplete. Charlotte assaults the Zeus Clan's headquarters over Lucas's attempt to kill Neo, avoids casualties in the first strike, and threatens war if its elders touch one of her children again. She later probes Daniel Caelum's hidden history, backs the Academy position during Neo's Labyrinth hearing, purchases a True Soul Weapon, and warns Neo that Fate may transfer the cost of large changes to helpers. Her sponsorship therefore combines force, investigation, and an effort to make Neo accept consequences rather than assume protection is unconditional. The Shadow Trial return and the containment truth

When Neo and Jack Hanma return from the Shadow Trial, Charlotte tests Neo's unexplained knowledge of the future but accepts his refusal to reveal the rewards. She gives both students signed protection against anyone who tries to force that information from them, invoking the Academy's principle of choice. She also recognizes the Void being in Neo's Shadow Space, contains its aura, witnesses its claimed status as a Shadow, and produces documentation that later persuades outsiders to pause attacks. (Chapters 339–340 and 417)

Charlotte then reveals the harsher side of the same guardianship. Neo's connection to Void Window #8477 made him a containment target, and his admission placed him where multiple Paragons and Exalted Demigods could kill him if awakened Void Affinity made him go rogue. She nevertheless chooses rehabilitation where possible, directing Jack toward time reversal and restored training rather than expulsion for taint. Protection and surveillance are not later corrections to one another; both are parts of the institution she believes must keep students and the world alive. (Chapters 340–341)

Elizabeth's final journey and the restored history

Charlotte's warning to the Zeus Clan also deters world powers from attacking Elizabeth as her condition worsens. When Neo decides ordinary attendance no longer benefits him, Charlotte offers honorary enrollment so he can retain complete freedom without publicly abandoning the Academy. She initially refuses his demand for a future Senior Templar vote because it compromises neutrality, then accepts after Sphinx promises a favor. The bargain serves institutional image, but it also preserves a formal bond with the student she has repeatedly sponsored. (Chapters 344 and 367–368)

Sphinx later proposes sending Neo to seek Elizabeth's cure. Charlotte is terrified of surrendering her disciple's care, yet trusts Neo because of his record and Elizabeth's faith in him. She first considers hiding the journey from Amelia, then accepts Neo's insistence on seeking her permission. Elizabeth eventually dies, with Charlotte standing silently behind Amelia at the hospital. Charlotte remains present afterward and is among the friends Neo meets when he finishes reshaping the Cosmos, ending her story as a surviving guardian who could not prevent every loss. Appearance and personality

Charlotte is a very short elderly woman, about 150 centimeters tall, with a wrinkled face and bob-cut hair. She commonly carries a cane, wears glasses while reviewing documents, and travels on a gigantic phoenix that can shrink to sit on her shoulder. Her principal's office and cloud-top residence are attended by doll-like maids that create portals and carry out orders. (Chapters 55, 71, 97, 124, 127, and 151)

She is brusque, suspicious, politically calculating, and easily exasperated by Neo's habit of turning every conversation into leverage. Charlotte hides concern behind insults, threats, paperwork, and strategically unequal bargains. That manner does not make her care insincere: she plans Elizabeth's new life before their reunion, attacks a God Clan for one student, and releases her disciple into Neo's custody despite visible fear. Her affection is most legible through preparation and institutional action. (Chapters 55, 124, 140, 151, and 384–385)

Charlotte also values autonomy within firm safety boundaries. She will protect students who conceal trial rewards, permit voluntary missions, and find ways around attendance rules, but she maintains surveillance over Void risks and refuses to disclose institutional support casually. Her caution can become manipulation, as when she uses Neo to test Daniel's temporal limits without telling either man. The resulting portrait is of a guardian who accepts morally uncomfortable methods when she believes the Academy's survival is at stake. (Chapters 163–164, 339–341, and 367–368)

Powers and limitations

Exalted Awakener

Charlotte is explicitly an Exalted Demigod, also called a Stage 5 Awakener. Velkaria initially mistakes her for a Stage 2 God because of the comparable pressure, then corrects the classification after examining her. Charlotte can confront Clan elders, threaten fortified cities, create widespread attacks, and withstand Veldora's oppressive aura without yielding her authority. The source never shows her earlier grades or the breakthrough into Exalted, so those stages remain unknown. (Chapters 151, 339–340, and 367)

Intent, sight, and perception

Charlotte's Intent is powerful enough to immobilize or nearly overwhelm weaker people, although Neo observes that she lacks refined control over it. Her eyes provide exceptionally broad perception: she expands her senses throughout the Academy, identifies hidden activity, sees into a closed Window, examines Neo's Shadow Space, and notices elemental disturbances at distant locations. These feats establish unusual sight and awareness, but the narrative does not give the eyes a canonical technique name or explain their acquisition. (Chapters 71, 97, 119, 127, 167, and 339)

Dolls, portals, and barriers

Charlotte commands doll-like maids that investigate, teleport students, serve her residence, and construct portals even into defended Clan territory. She can also raise barriers quickly enough to contain Velkaria's corrupting aura and use fire rings to restrain Elizabeth while reinforcements stand ready. The dolls expand her administrative reach, but portal creation can require time and is obstructed by defensive formations. Their assistance should not be confused with Charlotte personally possessing every spatial technique they perform. (Chapters 97, 119, 151, and 339)

Fire and phoenix

Charlotte summons large volleys of fireballs and travels with a phoenix capable of changing size and assaulting the Zeus Clan's defensive formation. She can direct the creature in battle and ride it safely, while its flames do not burn passengers she accepts. The text demonstrates coordinated firepower without fully defining whether every flame comes from Charlotte's own elemental mastery, the phoenix, or both, so the two sources should remain distinguished. Institutional authority

As principal, Charlotte mobilizes Academy forces, posts emergency missions, certifies dangerous entities, controls access to students, and can promise protection backed by Paragons and Exalted Demigods. Her signature and Divine Energy imprint carry legal credibility outside the campus. This authority is an office rather than a personal cultivation rank, and it has political limits: openly punishing Lucas or voting for Neo can compromise neutrality and provoke conflict with God Clans. Neo Hargraves

Charlotte begins by evaluating Neo as a dangerous but promising student connected to Elizabeth and Henry. She heals, protects, investigates, threatens his enemies, and eventually sponsors his political ambitions, while also admitting that the Academy was prepared to kill him if Void Affinity emerged. Neo exploits her concern and institutional needs in negotiations but comes to rely on her certification and judgment. Their sustained relationship is protective without becoming familial by blood or free of mutual manipulation. (Chapters 71–72, 97, 123–151, 198–199, 339–341, and 367–385)

Elizabeth

Elizabeth is Charlotte's estranged disciple. Charlotte resents being abandoned for decades but responds by preparing a safe identity and job rather than demanding obedience. She restrains Elizabeth when her Shadow could endanger others, deters world powers from attacking her, and remains beside Amelia when Elizabeth dies. Entrusting her to Neo is Charlotte's most difficult act of faith because it places the disciple she reclaimed beyond the reach of the institution she controls. Sphinx

Charlotte works with Sphinx to monitor Neo's visions and uses its knowledge in Academy decisions without being identical to the Akashic Record or its administrator. Sphinx later trades a favor for Charlotte's promise to support Neo's future vote and directs the attempted cure for Elizabeth. Charlotte values its information but questions its incomplete explanations, making their relationship cooperative and transactional rather than simple command. (Chapters 138, 367–368, and 384–390)

Professor Daniel Caelum

Charlotte suspects that Daniel's long tenure and temporal abilities conceal a greater identity. She studies records, confronts him about controlled Time Slipping, and admits that she recommended Neo partly to test Daniel's limits without either man's consent. Daniel claims to be the Academy's forgotten founder, but later evidence identifies him more fully. Charlotte remains the current principal throughout; his hidden history does not make her a subordinate impostor or another incarnation of him. (Chapters 163–164, 167, and 184)

Items

Charlotte purchases the third True Soul Weapon at auction, later described as a God Slayer weapon needed by Morrigan. The supplied item manifest does not catalog it separately, and the novel does not show Charlotte using it as her signature personal weapon.
