Water Sphere

The Water Sphere is a deep-blue crystal orb made to measure elemental affinity for Water. Virya's fine runic work turns an otherwise lengthy diagnostic process into a portable test that Kai Tylenn can use on himself, his family, and Flynn.

History

Acquisition and Kai's measurement

Reishi Senyu recognizes that Kai is the likely recipient of the only Water Sphere ordered in the archipelago, then helps complete its delivery through merchant Revhani. The orb rests in a velvet-lined box and appears to contain swirling water. When touched, it reacts to Water affinity; Reishi demonstrates that feeding it aligned mana accelerates the reading, while Kai waits for the engraved scale to settle and measures an affinity of sixty-eight. Family and Flynn tests

Kai brings the Sphere home so that his family can learn whether Water magic is a viable path for any of them. He explains that the artifact tests only one element and treats the process as an option rather than a demand, leaving each relative to decide what the result means. Later, in Higharbor, he uses the same orb with Flynn and studies the nearly invisible runic network Virya engraved to improve the precision of its readings. (Chapters 96 and 188)

Abilities and properties

• Touch causes the blue crystal's swirling light and numbered marks to react to the subject's Water affinity; channeling Water mana makes the measurement resolve faster. (Chapters 89 and 95)
• The illuminated scale provides a numerical affinity reading, allowing comparisons and retesting after a person's affinity changes. (Chapter 95)
• The Sphere measures Water alone. Other elemental affinities require different tests, and the result offers information rather than granting the subject magic or training. (Chapter 96)
• A delicate runic web improves precision, but the corpus does not state the artifact's grade, power source, or whether a non-Water user can activate every function without assistance. (Chapter 188)
