Zerith

Zerith Wyleim is the veteran captain of Sylspring's enforcer garrison. His deliberately disarming manner conceals an experienced investigator who sees through Kai Tylenn's evasions and the political maneuvering around Valela Hightide, yet repeatedly uses that insight to shield vulnerable people rather than advance his own position. His defense of Sylspring during the pirate raid turns a supposedly quiet final posting into a last battlefield and makes his private commitment to reduce harm the defining consequence of his life.

Biography

Distressing Encounters to A Price for Everything

Zerith first meets Kai while overseeing his registration in Sylspring. Although his size, Yellow-or-higher standing, and silver-hawk uniform terrify the boy, the captain presents himself as an affable local officer content with low crime, a pleasant climate, and distance from mainland ambition. That ease is partly cultivated: he recognizes that Kai is probing his status and later notices the boy concealing his ability during the scholarship selection. Rather than expose him, Zerith explains the tests, advises him how much skill to display, and arranges a discreet withdrawal when Kai refuses the Republic's offer, preventing the refusal from becoming a public insult. (Chapters 77–87)

Valela's arrival reveals the harder edge behind Zerith's humor. A former comrade of Governor Ervyn, he rescues her from empty ceremony, then identifies the prepared political story behind her scholarship tour. His thirty years as an investigator let him recognize Cressida's influence and the danger of making the scheme too conspicuous, so he isolates Valela long enough to warn her. His abrupt physical methods frighten her and his joking manner obscures his intent, but the intervention is protective: he neither demands her secrets nor reports them, and he gives a young political actor information she has not been trusted to receive from her own side. (Chapters 81–82)

Zerith's surveillance of Kai becomes a quiet contest between official duty and personal judgment. Under higher orders he places a harmless tracking mark on Kai, one of more than a hundred such marks in town, but explains that formally removing it would attract greater scrutiny. After warning Kai how officials might weaponize tax and luxury-goods laws, he faces a more serious order when Kai's teachers vanish. Zerith answers with a deliberately tedious sixteen-page report that buries the case, classifies Kai as merely above average, and recommends only D-tier observation. He chooses an unperceptive corroborating officer and balances truths with lies so Cressida will lose interest. The choice grows from older guilt: for seventeen years he has remembered bodies from an earlier catastrophe, sent half his salary to a Kadria orphanage, and treated protection as a debt he knows can never be repaid. (Chapters 104, 118–123)

The pirate attack destroys the peace Zerith had hoped to find in Sylspring. He orders his officers to hold defensible positions because street fighting would expose civilians, while he moves alone through the town to kill raiders and drive survivors back toward their ships. After eliminating two peak-Yellow captains, he confronts a third fighter who, like him, stands half a step into Green. Wounded, nearly out of mana, and unable to exploit his usual mobility, Zerith burns lifeblood to keep Zephyr's Touch active. A crystal shard from Reishi Senyu shifts the enemy's shield just enough for Zerith to strike the captain's heart, though the answering sword pierces his chest. He dies believing the cost was worthwhile because Sylspring has survived. (Chapters 129–132)

Zerith's death is understood gradually rather than through an official celebration. Reishi tells Kai that the captain saved his life and died despite his efforts to help, prompting Kai to realize that the nosy officer had been one of the few reliable constants in his life and had carried his secrets to the grave. Zerith is buried under a simple stone in Sylspring rather than transported elsewhere. The raid's public aftermath turns the Republic into the town's visible protector, but Kai knows the practical truth beneath that political story: without Zerith's intervention, the raiders would have continued killing and pillaging for hours. (Chapters 135–143 and 162)

Appearance and personality

Zerith is exceptionally tall and heavily muscled, with large calloused hands and the physical presence of a veteran soldier. He appears around forty, though Kai assumes he may be older because both his race and profession are already at least Yellow when they meet. In ordinary duty he wears an unkempt beard and looks markedly less polished than his subordinates; for the scholarship event he trims his hair and beard and wears a spotless dark uniform bearing the Republic's silver hawk. His battle uniform is enchanted against heat, enough to keep his skin from charring when a fire mage detonates, though the garment is burned and shredded. (Chapters 77, 81–83, and 132)

His public manner is irreverent, intrusive, and frequently mischievous. Zerith enjoys unsettling guarded people, arrives with implausible excuses, and hides sharp questions inside friendly conversation. Those habits can become insensitive—he physically moves Valela without warning and frightens Kai even while trying to reassure him—but they coexist with patience and an unusual willingness to protect people from his own institution. Beneath the humor he is observant, strategically cautious, and deeply tired of violence. Battlefield memories, distrust of political curiosity, and skepticism toward silent gods make him cynical, yet none of them erase his belief that reducing the next death is still worth doing. (Chapters 77, 82–87, 123, and 132)

Skills, magic, and the Guide

Zerith is a wind-aligned melee professional whose formal profession name and full Guide status are never disclosed. At his final battle he and the armored pirate captain are each described as half a step into Green, while the other two captains are peak Yellow. This establishes Zerith's standing but not when he reached it. His higher Longsword level is the technical foundation of his close combat: even after an arrow disables his leg and stronger impacts threaten to disarm him, it lets him deflect the armored captain's attacks and exploit the narrow opening that ends the fight. (Chapter 132)

  • Wind Slash: Zerith projects cutting air from his sword. He uses successive slashes to kill ordinary raiders, sever a peak-Yellow archer's bow, and eventually overwhelm that archer with repeated attacks. Armor can blunt it—a focused cut dents rather than pierces an iron shield—and volume consumes mana he needs for the stronger captains. (Chapter 132)
  • Splitting Charge: This is a burst-movement technique that drives his body forward with enough force to break walls and erupt from rubble. It closes distance and creates surprise, but its direct trajectory is best used with cover or timing; Zerith combines it with defensive wind magic when an explosion accelerates him through a warehouse. (Chapter 132)
  • Windscreen: A profession-slot defense that performs poorly against direct physical blows but excels against formless magic and glancing attacks. It turns a pursuing fire blast into added momentum, disperses the fallout of fireballs, and reduces the damage from a self-destruction spell. It cannot make Zerith invulnerable, and repeated activation consumes a reserve already strained by fighting across town. (Chapter 132)
  • Zephyr's Touch and Gale: Zephyr's Touch enhances Zerith's body and other skills, providing the speed needed to close on ranged opponents and contest stronger fighters. It is expensive enough that he has only seconds remaining late in the duel and must burn lifeblood to sustain it, which weakens him even as it extends the effect. Gale channels a sword cut through flame and blunts the initial force of a mage's self-destruction, but still requires Windscreen, Zephyr's Touch, and his enchanted uniform to survive the blast. (Chapter 132)
  • Sixth Sense and Enhanced Reaction: Sixth Sense warns Zerith of unseen danger, while Enhanced Reaction lets his body evade before conscious recognition. Together they answer an ambush of arrows and warn him before a fire mage explodes. They remain constrained by his physical condition: after his reserves and lifeblood are depleted, Sixth Sense detects Reishi's intervention but Zerith lacks the strength to inspect it without leaving his defense exposed. (Chapter 132)
  • Investigation, sensing, and marks: Thirty years of investigative work make Zerith adept at reading rehearsed stories, hidden motives, and deliberately suppressed ability. His sensing skills map people inside buildings and assess approximate grades. A separate mark skill lets him tag and track more than a hundred people within its effective area; it is harmless and removable, but the act of removal would generate an official report. His Filing Index can retrieve remembered personnel records rapidly, as when he identifies Flynn Rilei, though the corpus does not define the skill's storage limits. (Chapters 82, 87, 104, and 132)
  • Stealth and command judgment: Zerith's stealth skills are only average by his own assessment, so he hides under burning rubble, suppresses his presence, and deactivates skills rather than relying on an exceptional concealment ability. His larger battlefield strength is judgment: he separates defense from pursuit, anticipates that stranded pirates will attack civilians, and refuses to call reinforcements away from protected positions even when that leaves him alone. (Chapters 129–132)

Relationships

  • Kai Tylenn: Zerith sees through Kai's concealed strength almost immediately, but converts that knowledge into advice, selective surveillance, and a misleading report designed to prevent closer official attention. Kai finds him alarming and exasperating, then recognizes after his death that the captain had been a dependable protector who never exposed his secrets. (Chapters 77–87, 104, 118–123, and 135–143)
  • Valela Hightide: Zerith recognizes the political pressures surrounding Valela's scholarship tour and privately warns that her side's maneuvering is too obvious. His methods are rough and his questions invasive, but he protects her from a clerk's pressure and does not pass on the secrets he infers. (Chapters 81–82)
  • Cressida: Zerith regards Cressida's appetite for leverage as a danger beyond ordinary protocol. Knowing she may personally read his report on Kai, he crafts it to satisfy her curiosity without encouraging closer contact, an act of bureaucratic resistance rather than open defiance. (Chapters 82 and 123)
  • Governor Ervyn: Zerith and Ervyn served together in the Republic's army, and that history supports mutual trust when Zerith helps receive Valela and later accepts a supposedly quiet Sylspring posting. The corpus does not detail their campaigns or the exact arrangement behind the assignment. (Chapters 81–82 and 132)
  • Reishi Senyu: Zerith intervenes in the final duel partly to keep the raiders from reaching townspeople such as Reishi. Reishi's crystal shard creates the opening for Zerith's last strike, and he then tries unsuccessfully to save the mortally wounded captain, carrying guilt even while acknowledging that Zerith saved his life. (Chapters 132 and 136)

Items

  • Enchanted longsword: Zerith's main weapon channels his wind techniques and supports his high Longsword skill. It cuts raiders and magical flame, deflects an enhanced arrow, and remains in his grip through impacts that smash him through a warehouse. Its effectiveness still depends on his mana, positioning, and physical strength. (Chapter 132)
  • Enchanted enforcer uniform: His dark Republic uniform bears the silver-hawk insignia and includes heat protection. During the pirate battle it prevents direct charring from a fire mage's self-destruction, but the blast burns and shreds it, showing that the enchantment mitigates rather than negates high-grade magic. (Chapters 77, 81–83, and 132)
