Herry Rickson

Herry Rickson is a Limgrell information broker who selects vulnerable people for the Stygian Cult and sells Keandra Tylenn's team information designed to lead them into a cloud-fairy trap. His records expose the scale of the disappearances after he dies while trying to escape interrogation. (Chapters 279–290)

Biography

Cult broker and fatal trap

Herry builds a reputation for reliable information and uses it to direct Keandra's team toward a trapped tower. When Keandra and Kai Tylenn infiltrate his heavily warded house, they overhear a cult enforcer blame him for the team's survival. Herry first insists that the cult would have been exposed without his help, then becomes submissive when threatened with the praetor's punishment. Ordered to find more candidates, he objects only that the requested number may attract the garrison's notice and asks when he will be paid, establishing self-preservation and profit rather than ignorance as the basis of his cooperation. (Chapters 279–281)

After the enforcer leaves, Herry notices missing lists and is ambushed by the intruders. Under Keandra's knife, he moves from denial to bribes and threats before admitting that he supplies names of people “who won't be missed.” He estimates that he has sent several dozen people to the cult, claims not to know what happens afterward, and dismisses their deaths as inevitable. When Keandra's grief loosens her grip, Herry headbutts her and runs. He slips on a loose paper, trips the wire across his own doorway, and triggers the fire array that kills him and destroys the house. The few papers Kai already stored survive and expand the investigation from a handful of official cases to dozens of targets. (Chapters 281–290)

Appearance and personality

Herry is a short, pudgy man in his thirties with a weasel-like face and oily black hair. At home he wears a stained silk robe with frayed edges. His voice is described as oily or whining, and he can move much faster than his body suggests when he tries to flee. Herry is paranoid, avaricious, sarcastic toward people he thinks he can intimidate, obsequious toward stronger cult members, and callous about the victims he selects. His extensive defenses show preparation, but his panic and clutter undermine it: he loses track of crucial records and dies by activating his own trap. (Chapters 280–282)

Skills, magic, and the Guide

Information profession

Keandra says Herry's profession focuses on gathering information and that his intelligence was usually dependable. His crowded study contains names, dates, journals, and reports extensive enough to identify vulnerable residents and support years of cult concealment. The corpus does not name the profession, its grade, any skills, acquisition conditions, search range, or whether a Guide ability rather than paid contacts produces particular leads. His failure to locate the hidden intruders or notice tampering before entering the room also shows that an information-focused profession does not grant complete immediate awareness. Wards, traps, and physical limits

Herry's home is layered with cloaked runes, fire arrays, trigger lines, and automatic switches, including enough explosive force to consume the building. A cult enforcer says Herry set up the tower wards and may have damaged their engraving, which supports operational familiarity but not authorship of the designs. The source never names an enchanting skill or states that Herry created the house arrays himself. Physically, he can sprint unexpectedly fast and escape a loosened hold, yet he is subdued by Keandra and lacks a demonstrated combat technique. His final trap is indiscriminate once triggered and kills its owner along with destroying evidence. (Chapters 280–282)

• Keandra Tylenn: Herry sells Keandra the lead that places her team in the cloud-fairy trap. She later hunts him for answers, overhears his cult arrangement, and forces his confession. Her grief over Caeden creates the opening for Herry's escape, but his own defenses kill him before he gets away. (Chapters 279–282)
• Kai Tylenn: Kai infiltrates Herry's house with Keandra, disables several traps, listens to the cult meeting, and preserves lists from the study in his spatial ring. He protects Keandra from the resulting explosion, allowing Herry's records to survive their owner. (Chapters 280–283)
• Caeden: Herry identifies Caeden as the smartest member of Keandra's group and claims the boy kept investigating matters that did not concern him.
