Derrell
Derrell is a prisoner found in the underground complex beneath the Lake of Myst investigation. Frantic, eccentric, and difficult to assess, he nevertheless provides the information that helps Kai's group locate Niel, manage other captives, and search for an exit. His repeated claims of extraordinary luck receive circumstantial support from improbable coin tosses and successful choices, but the Guide mechanics behind that luck are never disclosed.
Biography
Strings of Fate to Epilogue
Derrell meets Kai Tylenn while shackled in the cult's prison, with matted hair, mismatched eyes, and an urgent insistence that he can help. He disrupts Kai's Water magic by biting the enchanted restraints and bargains with information rather than waiting passively for rescue. Although his agitation and damaged condition make him hard to trust, his memories match the complex and point the rescuers toward Niel. Once freed, he uses his standing as a fellow captive to help Kai and Keandra approach suspicious prisoners and explains how the cult forces inmates to watch passages and ambush patrols. (Chapters 303–307)
During the escape, Derrell recalls talk of a cavern exit and boat, then admits the memory may have been a dream. He compensates for unreliable recall with what he calls exceptional luck, flipping a coin to choose a route and producing an improbable run of results while insisting his instincts will guide them. Keandra accepts the gamble because every conventional route is compromised. Derrell avoids direct fighting and argues that violence is not the answer, so his contribution remains information, mediation, and uncertain navigation rather than combat. The group eventually reaches safety, giving his claims practical weight without proving their mechanism. (Chapters 308 and 313–316)
After the escape, Derrell's cleaned blond curls and continued chatter make him appear less like a broken prisoner, though his manner remains eccentric. He chooses to accompany Keandra and Mari toward the coast and says he will watch over Keandra, a promise Kai receives skeptically given Derrell's own recent captivity. The decision develops him from a desperate informant into a voluntary traveling companion, but the corpus ends before establishing his destination, background, profession, or whether his luck continues outside the crisis. (Chapter 317)
Appearance and personality
Derrell has blond hair that is first matted by imprisonment and later forms curls after he can clean himself. His most distinctive feature is heterochromia: one iris is blue and the other golden. In captivity he speaks in a high, urgent voice and presents as frantic or manic, a condition that must be read in the context of confinement, tainted mana, and fear rather than treated as a complete account of his ordinary personality. (Chapters 303 and 317)
He is talkative, theatrical, and confident in conclusions he cannot always explain. He admits when a memory may be false, yet still presses the group to trust his instincts; this mixture makes him both unreliable and unexpectedly useful. He shows social sense with other captives, avoids violence when possible, and attaches himself quickly to Keandra's party. Whether the eccentricity is innate, a survival strategy, or an effect of imprisonment is not established. (Chapters 307–317)
Skills, magic, and the Guide
Derrell is peak Orange and says his status showed 69 Luck the first time he saw it, a birth value he describes as rarer than one in a million among humans. His evidence includes sensing Kai's concealed arrival, choosing viable directions by intuition, and producing repeated heads with a coin when the group is lost. Luck is therefore an explicitly claimed attribute rather than merely Kai's label for coincidence, but Derrell's account is not independently displayed. Its present value, interaction with Fate, reliability, and failure conditions remain unknown, and he cannot articulate why a direction is correct. (Chapters 303, 308, and 313–317)
He is also resourceful under restraint and socially effective with frightened captives. Biting enchanted shackles interferes with Kai's Water construct long enough to be heard, while his identity as a prisoner helps the group avoid immediate hostility from others. No named skill, spell, profession, or combat ability is confirmed beyond the peak-Orange race assessment. His aversion to fighting and retreat from direct danger are practical limitations; his own kidnapping, torture, and near death show that exceptional Luck improves odds rather than preventing suffering or guaranteeing a favorable outcome. (Chapters 303–317)
Relationships
- Keandra Tylenn: Keandra gradually relies on Derrell's information and route choices during the escape. He later chooses to travel with her and promises to watch over her, beginning a companionship whose long-term shape is not yet shown. (Chapters 307–317)
- Mari: Mari escapes with Derrell and is part of the group he elects to accompany toward the coast. The source establishes shared travel and conversation, but not a deeper personal bond. (Chapters 313–317)
- Kai Tylenn: Kai initially treats Derrell as a dangerous and unreliable captive, then tests his information and benefits from it. He remains skeptical of Derrell's luck and protective promises even after the escape, preserving tension alongside practical gratitude. (Chapters 303–317)
- Niel: Derrell's memories help Kai's party locate Niel within the complex. Their later personal interaction is not developed. (Chapters 303–304)
Items
- Gold coin: Derrell flips a coin repeatedly to support a route choice. The result illustrates his luck claim, but the coin is not identified as enchanted or unique. (Chapter 313)
- Enchanted shackles: The cult restrains Derrell with enchanted bindings. They are instruments of his captivity rather than possessions, and the source does not provide their complete mechanics. (Chapter 303)
