Yolanda
Yolanda Martinez is a Meadow Lark night-shift caregiver who enters the crawl with Imani and the facility's residents. She becomes an archer and healer for the improvised group, then dies holding her position against the Brindle Grub so the residents can reach safety. (Chapters 22–40)
Biography
The Collapse and the First Floors
Yolanda begins as a Level 5 crawler still wearing her CNA scrubs, carrying a bow almost comically large against her four-foot-eleven frame. She joins Chris in clearing Mind Horrors, shooting them from down a hallway before they can inflict their mental attack, and helps the Meadow Lark survivors protect elderly residents who are poorly equipped for the dungeon. Her medical background also develops into a healing role shared with Imani. (Chapters 22, 37, 82)
During the Brindle Grub escape, Yolanda stands against a force she cannot stop while others usher residents into shelter. The creature cuts through her and Randall, killing them instantly; Imani screams her name from the doorway. The loss is both tactical and personal, removing one of the group's caregivers and one of Imani's closest friends just as Team Meadowlark is taking shape. (Chapters 39–40, 165)
The Circus and the Iron Tangle
Yolanda is no longer alive on the fourth floor, but Imani's grief remains immediate when Carl compares another healer to the role the two women once shared. The exchange confirms that Yolanda's contribution was not limited to archery: she helped keep the vulnerable group alive before the Brindle Grub took her. (Chapter 82)
The Hunting Grounds and the Masquerade
When Team Meadowlark formalizes its larger alliance, Imani names the guild Safehome Yolanda. The memorial makes Yolanda's protective work part of the survivors' institutional identity and preserves her place beside Imani even as the group expands to dozens of crawlers. (Chapter 165)
Faction Wars at Larracos
The Safehome Yolanda name remains in active use during the ninth-floor war, including warnings routed to other crawlers. Yolanda has no posthumous agency in these events, but the guild's shelter function continues the responsibility she accepted toward Meadow Lark's residents on the first floors. (Chapter 313)
The Parade of Horribles
During Imani's eleventh-floor nightmare, Donut invokes Yolanda among the friends with whom Imani built a new life after leaving Detroit. The reassurance identifies Yolanda as part of the peace and chosen community Imani believed she had found, giving the early death a lasting emotional meaning beyond the guild's name. (Chapter 482)
Appearance and personality
Yolanda is a round Hispanic woman around fifty years old, approximately four feet eleven inches tall. She wears Meadow Lark medical scrubs and a plastic CNA identification badge; her quiver nearly drags on the floor. She greets Carl enthusiastically and shows courage grounded in care for others, ultimately standing her ground when retreat would leave residents more exposed. (Chapters 22, 39–40)
Skills, class, and abilities
Archery and healing
Yolanda fights with a bow and uses distance intelligently, deflating Mind Horrors from a hallway before they can reach the group. Later dialogue identifies both her and Imani as healers, connecting their pre-collapse medical work to dungeon support. The corpus does not name Yolanda's class, healing spells, ammunition properties, or later level, and her early death prevents further development. (Chapters 22, 37, 82)
Caregiving and protective resolve
Her CNA experience gives the Meadow Lark party a practiced caregiver accustomed to vulnerable residents. In the final escape she chooses to stand against the Brindle Grub despite the hopeless mismatch. The action buys only moments and cannot save her or Randall, but it helps define the protection-oriented legacy later embodied by Safehome Yolanda. (Chapters 22, 39–40, 165)
Relationships
- Imani: Yolanda is one of Imani's best friends and shares the group's healing burden. Imani later memorializes her in the guild's name. (Chapters 22–40, 82, 165)
- The Meadow Lark residents: Yolanda enters with the care facility's night group and fights to keep its residents alive, dying during their retreat to safety. (Chapters 22–40)
- Chris and Brandon: She trains and fights alongside them as the able-bodied members of the early group. (Chapters 22, 37)
Items
No personal item link is assigned to Yolanda in the current manifest. Her bow, oversized quiver, scrubs, and CNA badge establish her early combat role and former profession, but no named artifact or later custody is shown. (Chapter 22)
