Shi Maria
Shi Maria is a spider entity used as a powerful eighth-floor totem whose attempted possession leaves a persistent presence inside Carl even after Donut destroys the card.
Biography
The Eighth Floor and Bedlam
Carl and his allies pursue Shi Maria because Samantha is trapped by the spider and because its card can become a high-value combat asset. Carl adds the totem to his active deck and later bears a chest tattoo connected to it, but the apparent rescue becomes a new threat when Shi Maria targets Mongo and pushes toward Carl's mind. Donut tears the card immediately after the decisive battle to stop further harm, yet Carl can still feel the entity, showing that destroying the summon does not undo the deeper bond. (Chapters 246–251, 260–268, and 291–293)
Faction Wars at Larracos
The production later reveals that a dream sequence was intended to let Shi Maria take over Carl while his normal systems were unavailable. That maneuver fails to give the entity operational control, but later comparisons still describe Shi Maria as being inside Carl rather than gone. Her latest state is therefore contained and poorly understood: she is no longer an active card, yet remains a latent invasive presence whose exact access and limits the corpus does not resolve. (Chapters 300, 315–318, 372, and 386)
Appearance and personality
Shi Maria is associated with a Spider Reaper form and a spider-shaped mark, but the corpus emphasizes her predatory presence more than a complete physical portrait. She is intelligent enough to grow frustrated, seek more useful minds, and attempt control, making her a hostile consciousness rather than a mindless summoned animal. Her motives beyond escape, access, and predation remain uncertain. (Chapters 246–251, 293, and 300)
Skills, class, and abilities
As a totem, Shi Maria can be summoned through the eighth-floor deck and deployed as a powerful combat creature. Her more consequential ability is mental invasion: contact leaves a tattoo-like bond and permits pressure from within Carl, while the planned dream takeover suggests she can exploit an incapacitated host. The attempt was supposed to deny her Carl's spell, message, and inventory systems, and destruction of her card ends ordinary summoning but not the internal residue. The corpus does not establish a reliable method for removal or prove that she can presently seize full control. (Chapters 246–251, 263, 291–293, 315–318, and 386)
Relationships
- Carl: Shi Maria shifts from a totem in his deck to an invasive presence inside him, creating a threat that survives the card's destruction. (Chapters 246–251, 293, and 317–318)
- Donut: Donut destroys Shi Maria's card after the spider threatens Mongo, prioritizing her companion's safety over retaining a powerful summon. (Chapter 293)
- Samantha: Samantha's entanglement with the spider prompts the initial rescue effort and supplies early information about the entity. (Chapters 246–251)
Items
No generated item article is assigned to Shi Maria. Her totem card is destroyed by Donut, while the surviving mark on Carl is treated as a bond or manifestation rather than a separately inventoried object. (Chapter 293)
