Rend

Rend is a massive, armless tummy acher who becomes a companion of Carl's group and an inseparable friend of Mongo. His appetite and childlike curiosity provide comic relief, but his size and loyalty also make him a useful guard through Faction Wars and the eleventh floor. (Chapters 304, 419, 494)

Faction Wars at Larracos

Rend enters the Princess Posse's orbit already fascinated by Mongo. Despite having no arms, he learns to climb onto the dinosaur's back, and the pair become close enough that Donut treats their moods as linked. During the war he is moved between the castle, saferooms, and guard details rather than treated as disposable infantry; when the other children transfer away, he and Mongo remain with Carl's party. The Parade of Horribles

On the eleventh floor, Rend's literal one-ton weight requires Carl to build or reinforce transport for him, but the group still brings him into the field. He guards the garage with Mongo, survives the final fighting, and responds to Carl's “eat the rich” joke with one of his rare spoken words after chewing on a Horribles mask. His continued presence at the collapse confirms that he survives the supplied endpoint. (Chapters 399, 419, 494)

Appearance and personality

Rend resembles a gigantic meatball with a huge mouth, no arms, and enough mass to weigh approximately a ton. He is curious, food-driven, and easily distracted by gore, yet affectionate toward Mongo and responsive to the party's directions. Skills, class, and abilities

Rend's principal advantages are bulk, durability, a powerful mouth, and surprising mobility for a limbless body. He can run, negotiate stairs with difficulty, carry smaller allies such as Bigs, and stand guard. His weight is also a practical limitation: he needs specially reinforced transport and can fall into hazards while pursuing food.
